It looks like an aluminium pan, but it is, hands down, one of the most curious boats ever presented in this channel. The concept is I believe sound through and through and it looks like a survival cocoon for an apocalyptical epic where the oceans became the one place to thrive. Easily (oddly?) one of my favourite vessel that passed through Toby's seaworthy hands...

It's one of those boats that just look like they shouldn't sail, but it looks like it does. Big fan of the thought that has gone into this yacht as well and the price looks more than reasonable too maybe that is because of not having carbon everywhere. The choice of aluminium really is an interesting and great choice, especially when it comes to the end of life of the yacht. I do hope they make the hull form using explosives :D Cheers for the vid.

What an interesting concept - likely she would work very well here in Australia - providing there was a lot of flow-through ventilation for the interior - otherwise she looks like a solar oven with that foredeck ! I would also have liked to have seen an image or diagram showing the entire hull for this mini-review. Hopefully there will be a more substantial review of the boat under sail in a 10 - 15 knot breeze and with a bit of chop on the water (to silence the critics of scows - chop is not a problem if you know how to sail one).

Looks like it would make a nice boat for 3-4 night outing for 3-4 people, likely well behaved with no nasty surprises in handling and the ability to ground. Add a small porta-bote tender and you could have a lot of fun exploring coastal shallows. The only down side I see would be those windows on the forward deck in hotter climates, you'd need to keep them covered from sun up to sun down or it'd be an oven inside.

Wow! Not a scow as I know 'em, but this & the MacGregor are definitely compelling little sailboats. These could be an entry Bennettaeu etc sub-brand, just make grp instead of aluminium & tidy it all up. _Before the hydroplane era, I raced "Classic Moths". It was scows v skiffs before hydros. Crazy little boats._ _Scows dominated flat waters, any real chop & the skiffs could point much higher. I had one of each._

Bravo !

The extra floatation up front would probably help her ride higher in the bow as it enters a wave. I don't see it making the ride much rougher at sailing speeds.
@weatheranddarkness
@weatheranddarkness 2 жыл бұрын
That might be exactly the crux. The modern scows work because at displacement speeds they work on waterline length, and once they’re planing they still don't generate enough velocity to be overly interrupted by the chop on the surface of the swell that they’re surfing anyway

The top triangle on most ordinary sailboat rigs does not add anything but windage and weight high above deck. It's a great idea to just cut it off. A sailboat does not need to look like a dart to go efficiently through the water - a windsurfer for example goes over the surface efficiently - even when not planing. And when heeled in a 'dart' design you loose a lot balance anyway. With a scow you get a lot of waterline, stability interior room and workspace on deck on a short boat. I don't agree with aluminium for the hull. There are so many great composites available. Rethinking boat design is very welcome indeed :-). All the best Per

One would think the bow design would have to cause the boat to “hobby horse” in rough seas. I’d bet it surfs down waves like crazy however. Can’t argue about all the utility of the extra space below deck however. Great experiment.

For the lakes... yes: for Australian lakes? most, for west Ozzie coastal cruising I don’t think so, it would do well around the Gold Coast but would need to be trailerable at this length as moorings are a 12 year wait and marina berths for the rich who wouldn’t buy it. I like it, if it’s below $150AUD with all the usuals that usually without being ridiculous can add up to double the price of a Beneteau it’s a good thing.

The perfect inch by inch replica used in master & commander is moored at the San diego naval museum. The scow bow looks just like this sailboat. It's an ancient design that allows for a broader beam and shallower keel. The bow and beam provide the buoyancy to counteract healing & plunging. Someday, narrow & sharp "pretty" boats will look obsolete and dated with an obvious form over function emphasis.
@weatheranddarkness
@weatheranddarkness 2 жыл бұрын
Horses for courses. If you graphed relative boat mass, power and bow shape and seastate and length and design speed against eachother you’d have probably eight intersecting lines. Modern scows work as well as they do because their power to weight ratio is such that that planing is within the realm of possibility. Most planing designs can afford to be blunt instruments, but once you keep going up the speed and sea state lines it starts to become beneficial again to keep the bow from lifting.
@larkangel6593
@larkangel6593 2 жыл бұрын
@@weatheranddarkness Sail warships were designed for platform stability. Clippers were designed for speed while carrying cargo. Take away the cargo, and what provides the fastest hull shape? Planing. So now we have a non plunging bow, a broader beam, two rudders/wheels *and* much more power in both rigging/sail strength. The only thing holding back full scows on expensive boats is perception. Each iteration gets closer, but we're probably years away as new models slowly introduce fuller bows
