Some thoughts about scabbard angle and its' pros and cons, and wearing the scabbard with armour when you don't see a belt around the curass

That sword belt under the plate is an eye opener to me . been always confused when seeing it in highly detailed arts

it is aa simple interpretation, i don't necessaarily know this is right, but it works fairly well

thank you, it was a bit tricky to film, as all angles are obscured by the legs of the riders and the horses themselves

I never thought about sabers curving around the horse. Eye opening.

i used to ride around with them over the years, they sort of just do. of course there are also contemporary straight blades. but it is interesting just how long the straps to the scabbard are for napoleonic swords, hence on foot people often carry the sword under their arm, or hook it (backwards) on a hook on the ring on hte swordwaistbelt they flap around a lot and hang remarkably straight down and just behind your leg

@@airnt I never rode with a saber. Our horses were not trained for that and would freak out (rightfully so, since we weren't trained either...). Anyway, it's interesting how horsemen tended more toward those deep curves in the blades. Makes all the sense in the world if you consider the technique of delivering the cut, but I never thought about them simply fitting the horse better.

Just one more quick comment. As I watched y’all’s well trained horses being maneuvered, I see that is exactly how an American rodeo team roper moves their horse. I find these similarities absolutely fascinating. I recon a horse is a horse, and if ya ride well, the techniques are gonna be very similar. But it’s still fun to actually see. I’m very interested in ALL things equestrian, and yer videos are terrific!

i am sure it is not a system that will work well for every set up, more an interesting option of what we might need to consider we aare looking at in art, for instance.

I usually reenact the transition betwen the XIII and XIV centuries (in medieval Castille) and found that if you place a XIII-style integral sword belt over a XIV style plate cuirass, it becomes basically impossible to re-seathe the sword once drawn without doing a complicated series of steps.
@airnt
@airnt 2 ай бұрын
the set up can indeed give fairly serious issues. i don't know if there is a good solution. The 14th century corrazina has a fauld, or do you mean a globose breastplate? the plate faulds do come in before 1400 but really become established by 1410 or so.

@@airnt breastplate. And the solution was to put the sword on a new swordbelt (which made me make a SECOND scabbard for the same sword, something I wanted to avoid). Such is life.

I'm envisioning an elaborate leather sheath for a battleaxe that would completely enclose the axe head for protection of the carrier and horse, but the entirety of the leather would be attached to the belt with a rotating hinge, so the axe haft could be rotated diagonally backward as needed for sitting, riding, etc., and then fall down vertically again while walking. Perhaps the sheath rotation point fits down into an open-topped slot receiver on the belt, which would allow the sheath and axe to be removed altogether from the belt as needed.

Protective covers for many things were common in the 15th c. I think there are axe covers. These are not for carrying, though Warhammers and one-handed battleaxes are hung from the saddle by running the handle through a ring on the middle of the pommel of the saddle (the front plate) Later ones often have a hook along the head that can clip onto a belt or the saddle Quick drawing warhammers is mentioned on horseback. Slinging a sword from tge saddle is rarely depicted, but there is one: charles the bold is shown in a very bad dtawing in a red overcoat on the worst horse ever... With a sword on the front of the saddle.

awesome video, very informative! Have you considered adding a besagew in front of your right deltoid, where you put your lance? Having watched the last videos about longbows vs armour from tod's workshop, I cannot look this gap in right pauldrons as I used to!

i also have spaudlers which have those rondels, actually. i have tried quite a few test over the years of walking at archers (with blunts) particularly shooting at the armpits, it is remaarkable how few hits you get and how a little shrug significantly makes the hole smaller.

@@airnt thanks for the answer! I guess on horseback, the couched lance will make the hole disappear!
@airnt
@airnt Жыл бұрын
@@TeutonicEmperor1198 yes, and the lance will also be held in the flight of the arrow a lot, with the whole shaft, so you would be surpized how many arrows hit the weapons. similarly the arrêt actuaally sits across the hole to some degree. here the poldrins were not quite sitting in their usual place, but the actul area of mail available is 7x8 cm, this is then sort of cut in two by the presence of the arrêt. the areaa with the shoulder joint and the blood vessels is actually entirely covered by the poldrin and its re-enforce. if the arrow would hit this area, it would pierce the pectoralis muscle, for sure, but there is nothing else there. in this video i used my old curass, i have a new breastplate which my chest fits in better (the old one is 15 years old and i put on some chest and backmuscles) so the pecs bulge less out of the new curass and it covers a tiny bit more. so small set up differences do make a difference on the risks involved. i think the main gap to be worried about is the inside of my right elbow when i am fighting with a sword, or having my lance carried upwards, for instance. This also has historical precedence that we know someone was hit exactly there.
@TeutonicEmperor1198
@TeutonicEmperor1198 Жыл бұрын
@@airnt awesome answer! I was expecting that many arrow would have hit the lance! I assume that none of those arrows managed to penetrate the lance due to its curviture and its low weight, right? I wasn't expecting the inside of the elbow to be a major weakness against concentrated arrow fire, so I'm surprised! Probably bigger "ears" to your couters could have helped! Have you ever tested the intricate articulation of the inside of the elbow, that was used during the suits of armour of the 16th century?
@arnekoets3085
@arnekoets3085 Жыл бұрын
@@TeutonicEmperor1198 those articulations are known from before 1400 but are rarer as they are awkward. I myself have naver been hit in the inside of the elbow, at all, i think. But it is a potential inroad to mail. I mentioned it because there is a historical example of someone getting hit there by a longbow and making a full recovery. In fact the English king gets hit in the face by a French arrow, and survives.

Would the scabbard ever be hung from the saddle instead of the rider?
@airnt
@airnt Жыл бұрын
i know of ONE example: Charles the Bold in a red overgown on the worst drawn horse in Christendom. yet he is wearing one sword and has a second one on the pomnmel of his saddle. ('Saddle sword' is mentioned in other places) i might have missed other examples. we do it regularly out of lazyness with swords in training, the ties to tie the stirrups up (which is historical) at the back og the tree can be used to put a sword though, but when you draw the sword the scabbard needs to be secured. it seems very much preferred to have a sword on the belt and a warhammer on the saddle, stuck with the handle through a ring on the front of the pommel.
