In this guitar lesson you learn how to construct arpeggios from scales. In this way you can play a scale in a scale arpeggio by stacking 6 third intervals on top of each other, to create 13 chords. Like the Cmaj13 or Cmaj13#11 chord. The sound of a scale is very much defined by such a scale arpeggio that contains 7 different notes.
In this crystal clear guitar tutorial you’ll learn how to play these arpeggios from scales and put them into practice and applications. You learn over what chords and chord progression you can play these scale arpeggios. We look at the modes of that major scale, harmonic minor scale melodic minor scale and whole tone scale. We will also make an altered scale application with a scale arpeggio of the melodic minor scale.

Personally, I had to come back to this stuff since it was a little overwhelming at the time, but after hammering some concepts in, this stuff makes sense to me now that I've got some terminology and mechanics secured. This is advanced-leaning material.

Hi Rob, this is by far one of the best guitar channels ever! The depth and diversity of your musical knowledge, your technique, your way of teaching so structured and supported by graphics and scores/tablatures, that surely take you a lot of time and work, even the humorous notes that relax the tension of the lesson ;-) are all awesome! For all that you give us, thank you very much Rob!

1 million thanks for a video I can't find now when you covered pentatonic substitutions. It has opened up the fretboard all the way for me after years of trying to connect all the dots. Who knew you could play A minor AND/OR B minor pentatonic over an A Dorian jam. The 2 scales blended together connect all the dots!

Avoid notes can sound wonderful and often the characteristic note for mode. Still... avoid notes should resolve most of the time. Maybe the words 'avoid note' are a bit infelicitous...

I have to say something, I just have to otherwise I'll suffocate myself uf,ok,calm... Wellll :D "avoid notes" - :) it's a myth, and a false one, why? Because there is something like characteristic notes for each modes :) and by a strange "coincidence", what they call "avoid" at the same time it is characteristic,like... gender of the scale or nationality, or race ("avoid" notes matter!!) looook Characteristic notes: c ionian - 4&7 degree (f,b in context of c) d dorian- 3&6 degree(also f,b but in context of d) e phrygian - 2&5 (f,b in context of e) etc. f lydian - 4&7 (b,e) g mixo. - 3&7 (b,f) a aeolian - 2&6 (b,f) b locrian - 2&5 (c,f) What catches the eye? Triton but! Position of the tritone does not work in lydian and locrian because in root note there is nothing characteristic . in f lydian ,f is root note in b locrian,b is root all scales have root on the first degree and this is why tonic is not a characteristic note. f lydian - 4&7(b,e in context of f) b locrian - 2&5(c,f in context of b) My question is,how to distinguish scales Ionian from locrian if we have the same set of sounds in boat c,f in context of b & f,b in context of c ??? Help!
