I grew up making Scale Military Models in the 70's ... we built Models with none of the kit you see today ... it was literally Glue and Paint - decals were pushed about with a soft toothpick and the tip of your finger. It's great to build up a tool kit but people would be amazed at how much you can get done with little to nothing also. I say this with the take away that I hope people don't see having gear as a barrier to just getting started on the Hobby - you can do a lot with next to nothing. Having the right tools for the job however makes light work, precise work and really NICE work ... easier!

I'm old school. All you need is a good nail file kit, alligator clips an exacto blade and snips to cut parts off the tree.

This is a great video. It exposes people to a whole range of tools and accessories for modeling, that you wouldn’t necessarily know they exist. Most people new to the hobby only know 3 things. Glue,xacto ,and maybe nippers.

I've been building models most of my life but always enjoy watching these types of videos because there is always something to learn. So glad I watched this as I have been buying the Tamiya pointed cotton swabs for years not knowing you could literally buy thousands of them for the same price as 1 pack of Tamiya! You'll save me a fortune!

I modified tweezers with a Dremal tool by grinding a concave relief into the gripping surface to keep round parts from launching out when picked up. Also helping hands with the two articulating alligator clips and magnifying glass is handy even to hold parts for painting. Modeling clay is used for holding parts too.

You have a serious dose of gadgetitis. Seriously though, the availability of such a broad range of specific items and tools for the serious/professional hobby modeler, is impressive. I'm an Irish sculptor and I frequently cast multiples of my figures for painting, and am more than grateful for the gamut of of gadgets and mediums available. I literally put together my kits for almost 20 years with crazy glue, a nail clipper, some nail sanding sticks and testors orange tube glue. The only paint i had access to was common spray cans from a hardware store.

Some tools I started using after seeing a nail saloon girl at work, is the Nail art tools she was using. I got them from a large river in South America, there are dotting tools which are great for painting small hard to get to spots and they are good for placing parts when gluing. There are a quite few Nail art tools that can how uses in modelling.

Some very nice recommendations indeed. And yes, those Raser are just glorified glass nail file... avoid them. Why not use glass pipettes? The markings are clearer and the best part about them is that they are easily cleaned - also double as stirrer at times. I bought a dozen of glass pipettes ranging from 1ml to 20ml and never had to worry about pipette ever. Yes, it cost much more initially but in a couple of years they will pay for themselves - as long as you dont drop them :P p/s: I am cheap, I just recycle runners as paint mixer most of the time. Just cut a stick, heat up one end and flatten it if needs be, stir and throw.

Liking the flex-file so I made one out of alloy bar and it works great, thanks for that one. Looks like the Zip Kicker is the same principal as Mitre fast for using on Super Glue but that can turn thing a bit white. Does the Zip Kicker do that ?? Once saw a video that said you can use sodium bicarbonate and it'll do the same acceleration ! Haven't tried that one yet though. The tooth flossing brushes are brilliant for cleaning air brushes and like you said they come in several sizes by colour codes. . . the ones they supply with the metal ends do scratch your airbrush for certain !!! The runner stand is a new one on me and it looks absolutely fabulous. Definitely getting that set. Really enjoyed watching your video even though I've been modelling for years. Just goes to show that there's always something new to learn.

someone's prolly said already but just in case, OLFA may be also available at your local sewing store, they started (afaik) in cutting for quilters and the like, that's how I know of them anyway. Funnily enough a lot of my quilting/crafting supplies do double duty for scale modeling/miniatures I wish I'd known about the canopy glue during my last build =/ maybe it's just old, but my Testors clear canopy just didn't work (hold) Those runner stands are def something I need too - thanks for the video! enjoyed

Really enjoying the videos - thanks. I have an issue with lots of spray can paints (Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.) clogging and becoming wasted. I’ve tried soaking the spray heads in solvent, replacing them, inverting the can to spray propellant through when done … but keep having the problem. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

hey bud, baking soda and water or alcohol mixture works awesome for a super glue kick starter to, thats what i use. and its instant as well, use like a tablespoon of baking soda to a half cup or cup of water or the isopropal* alcohol. works great and heck of a lot cheaper ; )

Hi Rex, I’m a grandmother who does craft with her grandkids….interested for my 11yr old grandson. Learned from you and bought a compressor and airbrush. Was going to use craft paint like you showed us. Telling my son about all of this….and he brings me a big box of Tamiya paints….about a hundred jars plus thinner, gloss and a couple of Japanese models one no English, that he picked up at a sale. Older stuff one jar was marked$2.50. A few of mr color was dry but I put mr color thinner and am rehydrating them. Would love to see you builds model for us. I watch a lot of videos to learn and yours is excelllent. A couple of items to checkout is Tim Holtz scissors he has 3 sizes the small one is pointed, sharp the med one cuts metal leather etc. Hobby Lobby has them in the craft section under Tim Holtz items they are 40% off often so $6-7. Also nail painting has twizzers, tiny tiny brushes. I buy eyeliner brushes on Amazon in bulk. Also very small rubber like spatula to crape out jars also Amazon.

Swann Morton scalpel blades in 10a or 11 in a retractable holder is my blade of choice. It's safe and I don't stab myself while absent-mindedly putting a cap back on.

I live like 30 mins from megahobby over the bridge. They are a great place to go when i am in a pinch. Only downside is they do seem to be priced higher than most other places and are often out of stock of essentials.

Duplicolor is the best primer i used, very fine result, their paints also aren't bad, gonna order some Vallejo Plastic Putty for filling seam lines and pin holes, i currently used something similar to spackle paste used for drywall to cover up 3d print imperfections.

Can you tell what the black mat is on your workbench? Not the cutting mat but the expanse of black covering your entire bench. I have a nice table in my office I’d like to use for modeling but want to cover it with something to protect it. Great video!
