Just a question Greg, Last night I setup my Arc Pro for the 1st time, had a load of fun, However I would like to know if it is normal for the cars to get faster as the fuel load decreases? Is this the Arc Pro trying to simulate weight change in the car due to less fuel? I found that in analogue mode the cars would be very fast but in digital mode they would be slower but seem to get fast as the fuel load decreased. Is this normal? Sorry for the noob questions, I have been away from Scalextric for 25 years. Thanks
@ggaub

That is a feature of the fuel load, yes. I figured it would work in analog mode as well, though, so I'm surprised you say it doesn't. When you did analog mode, did you have fuel turned on?

I recently purchased a Carrera Go analog set, 1/43 scale and quite a bit of extra track. I’m hooked, but already looking to go digital 1/32. Since I’m changing the scale, I don’t have to stick with Carrera, either way the track I have now won’t work well with 1/32 so my dilemma is Carrera or Scalextric. I like the Scalextric platinum because of the wireless controllers and 4 cars in this particular set. This is the first video I watched on the platinum set and I’m glad you went into detail, lots of good information. Now I have to figure out which brand to buy. Thanks for putting this out there!

You'll be happy with either Scalextric or Carrera, honestly. If you think you might want to race 1/24 at some point, and have plenty of space for their larger track (D132 track is the same as D124, suitable for 1/24 size cars), and are OK with thumb controllers rather than trigger controllers, then Carrera is probably the better choice. If your space is limited, and prefer trigger controllers, and don't expect to need to race 1/24 cars, then get Scalextric. :)

I’ve only ever had old school analogue scalextric sets before, I’m talking sets from the 80s and 90s, I had the pole position set with the cool smoke start feature (remember that??!!) and the huge 4 lane world championship set. I’m interested to have a go with digital but it looks like quite a bit of hassle to get going compared with the just plug it in and pull the trigger of older sets. How well do you find it works compared with the vintage stuff and which do you think is more fun both with friends and just doing laps on your own? Cheers, great informative video too.
@ggaub
@ggaub 4 жыл бұрын
It's as complex as you want it to be. You can definitely just turn it on and run some hot laps by yourself or with friends. I prefer digital, but I do race with both digital and analog clubs. Running on your own can be more fun with digital because there are ways to turn any car into a ghost car to run against. That said, there are more things that can go wrong, such as a digital chip malfunctioning, or a lane changer malfunctioning. But if everything is treated with care and respect, it will be fine for years and years. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll have fun again, just like the old days. :)

That's a tough one, actually. I'd still probably side with Scalextric on this one, though, because it clearly still has the ability to manipulate things enough to get the same level of simulations we have through third party advancements with the APB, things that Carrera can never do. Plus, I prefer trigger controllers and these feel great. Then there's the easy jump to oXigen for those needing more cars on the track at the same time.

Yes, it's the same kind of track. The only "special" pieces are the power base and lane changers. In fact, with this power base, there is a switch to put it into an analog mode, so you can still drive your standard slot cars around (only without lane changing, of course ;-)

@ggaub
@ggaub 6 жыл бұрын
It is, hands down, the best off the shelf digital system from Scalextric, and possibly the best off the shelf system available on the market today. The current unit, technically, IS the ARC Pro unit. The previous unit, the Advanced 6 Car Power Base, does have some functions enabled by third party software and accessories that the ARC Pro cannot currently match, but they require additional expense and often times a bit of work to get it all running. For the casual slot racer, this system is the bee's knees, or the dog's bollocks, depending on the country. ;-)

@ggaub Жыл бұрын
Sets with 6 cars, like the one I got, require two power supplies. It's just a second one identical to the one you have, and plugs into the other power input so that there is enough power for 6 cars. You can 3 with one power supply. If you add more cars, it will still work, but when one car accelerates, other cars will lose a little speed, and one one car crashes, others will gain a little speed, so it's better to have two power supplies when running 4+ cars. The only other thing I would suggest is downloading the MAGIC ARC App. It's much better than the Scalextric one. It's also more complicated, though, so if you're enjoying the Scalextric ARC App, then keep using that.

@ggaub
@ggaub 6 жыл бұрын
You hold the brake button to activate pit stop functions. As long as the car is stopped, and you are holding the brake, it will refuel, change tires, fix damage, etc. The different start types are live or dead. A live start means you can control the car prior to the start lights going out. This allows a jump start penalty to be activated if someone crosses the line early. With a dead start, no one can move until the race officially starts.

Awesome vid, got a question tho: how long does the track need to get to worry about power supply issues? If you had double the track length in this video would the one power base be ok? If not how do you fix that?
@ggaub
@ggaub 4 жыл бұрын
You never have more than one power base. You'll want two power supplies connected to the ARC Pro so that it has enough power for 6 cars with magnets in them. When the layout gets long, or the track connections get loose, you'll need to add "power taps" aka power jumpers or power boosters. These are just wires from the rails under the power base, or the track next to it, to another part of the layout. It's best to divide the track by number of sections rather than length or distance from the power base, then put as many power taps as you want. My main track has several, because I don't want there to be any noticeable power drop while racing.

@ggaub
@ggaub 4 жыл бұрын
@@wereitsoeasy5733 How long is a piece of string? It's less about the length than it is about how snug the connections are. If the track is brand new, never connected to another piece of track before becoming part of your layout, then it can be hundreds of feet long and power loss would be minimal. But, if the track is used or abused and the connectors are loose, then only a couple feet and the cars will stop dead for lack of power. ;-) Take a look at this link for a how-to on "crimping the rails" to make the connectors on Scalextric track snug again. I recommend everyone to do this prior to setting up a layout with used track. It's time consuming and can give you a sore hand if you have a lot of track, but it's worth it to have good power. Ignore the stuff about foil discs and cleaning blocks, though. old.slotforum.com/forums/index.php?autocom=custom&page=SLAP-03

Hello, can we run other makes of cars on the scalextric arc pro track and if so, what chip do we need to equip them with?
@ggaub
@ggaub 6 ай бұрын
yes, you can run pretty much any brand, though Carrera cars usually need a replacement guide that is thinner. Any analog car can be run in the analog mode (little switch on left side of the base), one car per lane with no lane changing. To race any car digitally, you'll need to install any Scalextric Digital compatible chip. Often times, that will require soldering at the least, and sometimes modification to the car's interior and chassis to make a place for the chip and the LED to shine through.

The 4 car set came with two power supplies. Most 3 car systems, or 2 car, will come with one power supply. This has been the case since the original Scalextric digital base. That's not to say that the base won't work for 6 cars with one power supply, but it's much more likely have issues, either powering the cars, or staying on rather than shutting down when the power drops as all 6 cars are starting a race. Two PSUs for more than 3 cars is advised.

Do I need to adapt my analog carse to use them in Arc Pro? Thanks your your help.
@ggaub
@ggaub 4 жыл бұрын
1) No. Scalextric digital is backward compatible. Cars from 15 years ago will work on ARC Pro. 2) The cars will need Scalextric Digital chips to be able to change lanes. Any brand car can be retrofitted, but you cannot put a Carrera Digital car on Scalextric Digital track and have it work digitally. 3) No. The ARC Pro has a switch on the side that puts it in ARC Air mode, which is 2 lane analog. Controllers 1 and 2 will control the two lanes, and you can put most any analog 1/32 car on the track and run it.

The cars remember what they were last programmed to. If you have 60 cars, and you program 10 to red and 10 to green, and so on, you can switch out the red cars willy nilly and the system won't have any idea. Hi, I've been doing a lot of research about slot cars digital racing. And I cannot decide what's the best or more cuality and pocket friendly sistem (Scalextric or Carrera). Also I'd like to know if the high performance cara like the ones from Sideways or Slot.it can run digitally in any of those systems, because I'm into serious racing!
@ggaub
@ggaub 5 жыл бұрын
There are apps/software for each system that enables serious racing, so don't focus too much on what is shown in this video, or other videos showing the Scalextric app, or the Carrera app. Look up stuff like Magic Race App for ARC, and SmartRace for Carrera. You can chip and race performance cars on either system, though the SSD chips tend to be smaller than Carrera, and slot.it even make an SSD compatible chip that fits their cars quite nicely. That said, there are 3rd party chips for Carrera that aren't as large as OEM as well, so again, a bit of a toss up. I guess I would focus more on the track than anything else. Do you have the space needed for a good Carrera layout? Their track is made for 1/24 as well as 1/32, and so you can't get as complex a layout in the same space as you can with Scalextric Sport. But... Carrera supports 1/24 cars, and there are some pretty nice ones to race competitively with, such as BRM and ScaleAuto. What kind of track do you race on right now?
@andresgarces10
@andresgarces10 5 жыл бұрын
@@ggaub First of all, thanks for your answer. Currently I don't own any track or system, I've raced many times on a serious slot racing club, but that's located in another city. I'm gonna start from the ground, want something with quality that I can upgrade in the future. I think I may not hace enough room for a complex Carrera layout, so that could be a negative point. So, now that you have clear some aspects, I'm concerned about which system is easier to upgrade for something like oXygen. Also, I'd like to hear about the quality of the products of both brands.
@ggaub
@ggaub 5 жыл бұрын
@@andresgarces10 Scalextric digital is a much easier upgrade to Slot.it oXigen, as the lane changers will work without any modification, whereas other brands of track would need to have the electronics replaced. Overall, quality is comparable between Carrera and Scalextric. They each have strengths and weaknesses. Scalextric's track weakness is the quality of the connection at the joins. For proper competition on their track, you really must spend the time to install a good number of power taps/jumpers. I even went as far as to connect each track to the next one with small wires soldered to the rails underneath. With the power taps, it is effectively a continuous rail, and there have never been any power problems since doing that work several years ago. Carrera needs power taps as well. I would say only slot.it's new Policar track is probably pretty good without power taps, but only time will prove that. oXigen is definitely the direction to go for competitive digital slot racing, in my opinion, and so I would suggest starting with Scalextric Digital and move to oXigen when/if interest is strong in your club. Or, just go straight to oXigen and you won't even need a power base. :)

I didn't realize it at the time of this recording, but it has since been discovered that holding the lane change while crossing the power base, it will ignore the lap rather than count it. As such, it's best to make sure there are no lane changers just before or after the power base, so that people aren't likely to be pressing the button when they cross the sensors. This bug has not been resolved yet at this time, as far as I know.

I have alot of track. Will I ned more power bases for that? Also why do they include 2 power units?
@ggaub
@ggaub 5 жыл бұрын
Two PSU to provide the amps needed for 6 cars. Same voltage, but more power to go around for the cars needing it. For large tracks, you don't add power bases, you shorten the distance from the source of the power (the power base) to the distant areas (by number of track joins) of the track. This is done by actual wire. We call them "power taps" or "jumpers". Essentially, you're bringing power directly from the power base track, or the track immediately connected to it, to another section of track, usually half way around the layout (again, by number of track pieces/joins, not actual distance). Sometimes one is enough. Sometimes it's not. Depending on the condition of your track joins, if they are loose from usage, you may need more than just one power tap. The more the joint flexes, mainly from assembly and disassembly, the looser the connections get, and the worse the power transfer between pieces. Scalextric makes and sells power jumpers already set up and ready to work with their track using small spade connectors that go on the small tabs near the center of certain straight track pieces. If you're capable of some basic wiring/crimping, you can make some yourself.

I bought a set that came with everything you see in this video. At the time, I believe it was about $600 USD. You'll be more likely to find sets like this nearer to the holiday season. As long as you get a set with an ARC Pro base, you can always add cars and controllers until you get the number you need. 132slotcar.us is a great place to shop, as the owner is known to compose a custom set if he doesn't have one you want.

Yep! A little over 5x12' in size, not even considering the extra added if borders were included and installed. I've messed around with some other layouts that can use the pieces from the set but in a smaller space, but was never really happy with any of them enough to publish. You can find lots of great 4x8 or 5x9 (ping pong table) size designs for Scalextric track out on the web. My main piece of advice when buying more track to play with is to avoid buying more sets or more standard R2 turns, or you'll end up with a pile that never gets used. Buy R1, R3, R4 turns, 1/4 and short straights, so that you have more variety in turns and can fit things in smaller spaces.

Are you using it in analog or digital mode? Are the cars all/both Scalextric cars without any modifications? Are you holding down the lane changer when crossing the power base for any reason? The ARC Pro system has a couple fatal flaws in the way laps are counted for digital cars. If the LC button is being pressed, it will ignore the lap. If the car does not have a standard guide length and distance between the guide and IR LED, then the lap will not be counted. The former happens when you have a lane changer right before or after the ARC Pro base, and the latter will happen with some non-Scalextric cars, or cars that have been chipped in a way that puts the IR LED in the wrong location (such as too far back or too far forward).

@ggaub 3 жыл бұрын
@@harveyashworth6285 If you race more than 3 digital cars at a time, a second power supply is advised due to the power requirements. Analog mode, being only two cars, should be fine with one power supply. As far as track size, you don't need more power supplies when you make a larger track, but you do need to help distribute the power more evenly using what are called power taps, or power jumpers. This is just wiring that is connected to the rails under the power base (or the track piece connected to it) to other track pieces around the layout. The track joins introduce resistance/impedence, and so larger tracks will often have areas with low power. The easiest resolution is to bring power from a good source to the bad one. The trick is making sure none of the wiring gets crossed along the way.

@@disguisedlime9005 Nope. When you turn on a controller, if it's already been paired with the base, the green light on the base will turn on, so you know which one it is. Turning them all on at once might be confusing, though. Turn them on one at a time. ;-) Also, you can always re-code a controller to a specific ID/color, as I show at the beginning of this video. If you can't figure out what color/ID a controller is paired with, just pair it up.

@@kennyken600I can't put up much of an argument against the complaint about the tablet, but there are options for apps that work with the system, and some of them are pretty good. This system is great for the weekend floor racers and kids, but I don't use it for competitive/club racing.
