If you've picked up a retro console like the PS1 or Sega Saturn lately, you've probably wondered how you can make these old games look as good as you remembered them. Well, I aim to help you do just that. In this video we will cover every single thing you will need to know to get that 240p picture scaled up to HD the right way. We'll cover retro video resolutions, connector types and the products that not only get your games looking their best, but the ones that fit your set up. We'll also compare the big boys in the line double / scaling market, the XRGB mini, or #Framemeister, the open source scan converter, or #OSSC and the new kid on the block, the Retrotink2x pro. Hopefully, this video will give you everything you'll need to put the super back in your super nintendo...............I regret writing that......
Intro - 00:00
Connection types - 02:55

Framemeister - 11:39

For Framemeister (if you choose that) - you can just get the FirebrandX profile files, load those on a micro sd card, pop that in the back of the FM and load it with the remote when you change consoles. There's no need to worry about settings because that guy is a perfectionist and has done all the work for you. Also, you're going to want to update the FM's firmware as soon as you get one.

"There may be more qualified people out there..." Perhaps, but their videos likely don't have Breath of Fire III music, a cameo from Grandia's Justin or Onimusha and Samurai Legend Musashi footage, making this video objectively superior. Excellent work here, man. Great to see someone talk realistically about the Framemeister's input lag. While I have an OSSC, the hardware compatibility issue keeps me using the Framemeister as my primary work horse. Its input lag has never bothered me, and I play a ton of timing-sensitive shoot 'em ups without issue. If you're speed running then that's one thing, but for everyone else, it's fine.

True story: the OSSC's bob de-interlacing almost borked my monitor when I first tried with a PS2. It left a whole load of pixels stuck on green from a hud in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Took about 12 hours of pixel conditioning to get them unstuck.

@@AvalancheReviews Nope, it was an older Dell U2311H - pretty standard IPS panel with a CFL backlight. I've not used the OSSC for any 480i content since then, in fear of permanent damage to any of my displays. I leave that task to the Framemeister and deal with the shortcomings that come with it (mainly the color noise and, to a lesser extent, the additional input lag).

Awesome info. Just starting to get back into retro gaming. Wound up getting a decent flat screen CRT from my boss, and running a PS2 via component on it looks remarkable. I did get bit by my lack of research and bought a NIB GameCube that doesn't have the digital output for component, but your illustration for S-Video vs Component/Composite makes me feel a bit better. As an aside, I never thought I'd play any game from the PS1 again in my lifetime due to the wonky controls most games have. 10:20, you have to remember that a modern TV also adds a couple frames latency. Now you are playing a game with 5 frames of extra latency compared to a old CRT for what the game was actually made. Reducing that latency by 1 frame really matters in that case.

Great synopsis of the leading solutions for retro gaming on panel TVs, thanks. Can you think about developing a video about how to wire everything up when your collection includes retro consoles, modern consoles and ancient consoles (A2600, Coleco, Intelli, etc), on a 4k panel? I’m thinking a workflow video with component switching, composite switching and HDMI matrix switching that handles 4:4:4 HDR10, blah, blah? One final thought- if I have access to all three of these solutions in hand, what works best on what or does daisy-chaining resolve to result in best of all worlds? Lots to unpack but what are your thoughts?

Hello, quick question regarding these devices in conjunction with a PS2 and streaming. What combination would you say is the best route to go for an upscaler and a capture card that would work with the PS2? Currently i ordered a Elgato Game Capture HD as it seems to be a tried and true method based on a number of posts/comments but I forgot to even consider that a majority if not even all of those people most likely would not be using an upscaler such as these. Thanks!

Really well put together and helpful! One question: I'm using an older Elgato HD capture card. The one which has the analogue input. It's pretty fussy and won't accept anything but 2X out of the OSSC and won't even accept a signal from a Tink2x S-video signal in some scenarios, such as from a Pal N64. Do you know of a capture card/device that works well with the OSSC above 2X line doubling?

Wow, I love how much detailed you were in this video! You're amazing! The framemeister image you got on Silent Hill 3 at 14:15 is so beautiful!! You're right in saying that it is much better for interlaced content. For the OSSC, it's the psp footage that impressed me the most. I might default to OSSC in the end since it's twice cheaper and bob deinterlacing imo is good enough. Got a question. Have you tried the PS2 component cables instead of composite? I'm curious to see if they makes a big difference combined with OSCC or Framemeister.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I exclusively use ps2 component cables and the difference is very noticeable. All of the PS2 footage in the video was was captured using them. I'd say that's the only way to go if you're getting a scaler. Remember, the higher quality video you put into a scaler, the higher quality upscaled picture you'll get out of it. So whenever possible, use either RGB Scart or Component cables.

The prices are both the same for because I live in Australia and USD is stupidly expensive for our contry so keep that in mind haha. Also, I just want a simple plug and play and you mentioned in the vid that there's technical stuff with the OSSC and compatibility issues and retrotink cant handle 480p which is kind of a big let down for me. So what do you think for a user like me? Thank you. p.s I dont plan on streaming these games anyway.

First off, THANKS! Glad to hear someone else gets annoyed with all the lag nonsense. Also, I think the retrotink2x pro would be best for you. It'll line double your n64, snes and ps1. You wont be able to run your wii/xbox through it since it can't pass 480p through, but most of the ps1 is 480i. So you'll be fine there. Plus, it is plug and play. No need to learn any settings. Just hook it up and you're good. Message me on twitter if you need any more help.

I use the ossc for a while and it's the best thing to use in my opinion. Unfortunately some line modes don't work on PAL PS2 games, atleast the ones that doesn't support 60 hz modes. NTSC however works like a charm. I mainly use it for my PS2. And it's great.

I had Panasonic G30 plasma working just fine with ossc, the thing is; firmware panasonic TVs shipped with from 2008 to 2014 was kinda broken especially in game mode, updating it to the newest version fixed all the issues I was having, but it's really weird how tvs with exactly the same gamma error and compatibility issues out of the box where shipped for so long, and they knew about it because it was fixed within a few months after each model was released.

23:34 It's a 2021 year now and ExtremeCap U3 is now having audio issues while trying to capture the footage of any console (neither current or past gen does not work). Do you have a solution to that? I wanted to try getting audio out of my gamepad separately since U3 is capable of capturing audio throughout the component cable (then my connection would look like this: image for HDMI 1080p60fps and audio for component through gamepad plus some tweaks in ReCentral 1 of course). I know this grabber is outdated but It costed some money back in a day and It would be shame just to throw it out to a trash bin :P

XRGB minis HDMI in and 480P out + Game 1 low pass filter wins for me. But, thats just half of the setup in order to get a proper picture on LED TVs. Pair this with the mCable/mClassic and a scanline generator at the end of the chain. This is just my personal preference ofc but I think this combo looks even better than a CRT.

Understandibly this video is focused on the NTSC video standard with no mention of PAL video used in Europe and Australia. The one huge advantage the Framemeister has for PAL users is that you can actually strech the image to correct PAL videos squashed pixels (or borders if you like). With the right settings my PAL SNES picture looks just like the Pixel Perfect Mode on Switch or the SNES Mini. Same for the Mega Drive where I can eliminate all the coloured borders.

I've been kicked off Facebook groups; banned from KZfaq channels; and even falsely called a "Flat Earther" for reporting better mileage with scalers certain retro gamers deem "laggy". I have the Framemeister and the OSSC and I do have to say that I have come to the same conclusion that you have. If you want to step up your PS2 gaming experience you should consider using an RGB Scart cable. With the OSSC you get the benefit of Sync on Green support which offers a much cleaner picture when the PS2 outputs 480P. Using Homebrew to force certain compatible games to 480p, some games look amazing with this setup. I use an Mclassic for those games that do work at 480P and it cleans up the Jaggies of those games. I have yet to test the Mclassic with the Xrgb mini Framemeister but I'll try that today at 480p.

8:11 I tend to disagree. If you're trying to primarily record interlaced video content, you don't need to go all out and spend obscene amounts of money on a Framemeister. You can get away with using cheaper consumer grade SCART or component scalers, since the interlaced output coming off the console is little different to a VCR or DVD recorder. Same deal with 480p. Again, most component scalers are built to expect such resolutions. The Framemeister and OSSC do have handling of 240p content beat though.

The framemeister used motion adaptive deintertlacing, but nopwadays the Tink 5X uses that same method AND upscales to a higher resolution with less video noise. I think the tink 2x is probably the most cost effective option for vcr capture. It outputs 480p which isn’t the highest resolution, but it’s very simple and plug and play. I'm having a problem that I hope maybe you can help with. I have a pretty Legendary game room where I play all my games on a high-end ViewSonic HD projector with a 130 inch screen and Bose surround sound. All my gaming looks great except when I try to play the PS2, GameCube or Wii. I've tried a few cheap and even mid-priced S-Video to HDMI converters but, for example: when I play Soul Reaver 2 on the PS2 the gameplay is extremely dark. I don't have this issue when I hook it up to a regular smart tv. I was thinking of getting the Framemeister for its ability to change the brightness among the other things in it's built-in menus. However, do you have any suggestions that might be more affordable that can brighten my games when playing on my projector? Thank you so much!

So on the topic of lag - its variable lag that is/ can be a ruined experience. The Framemeister only has 1 frame and its constant so this isn't an issue. The low quality cables not covered are the ones that can really change how the game is experienced. Depends on the game and all of this assumes your display is put in game mode.
