Skin Layer
Epidermis and Dermis: The outermost layer, the skin, consists of the epidermis and dermis, housing hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and sensory structures like Pacinian corpuscles. This setup not only offers protection but also facilitates sensory perception and temperature regulation.
Connective Tissue Layer
Superficial Fascia: Beneath the skin lies the connective tissue layer, or superficial fascia, a fibrofatty layer linking the skin to the underlying epicranial aponeurosis. This layer ensures the scalp's flexibility and resilience, absorbing impacts and facilitating movement between the skin and the epicranial aponeurosis.
Epicranial Aponeurosis
Fibrous Tendinous Tissue: The epicranial aponeurosis, a robust layer of fibrous tendinous tissue, serves as the attachment site for the occipitofrontalis muscle. This layer's toughness provides significant protection to the skull beneath.
Loose Areolar Tissue
Connection and Movement: A layer of loose areolar tissue creates a sliding plane between the epicranial aponeurosis and the pericranium, allowing the scalp's upper layers to move freely over the skull. This layer's elasticity aids in the dissipation of force, reducing the risk of injury.
Pericranium
Outer Skull Membrane: Finally, the pericranium, a dense membrane enveloping the skull's outer surface, consists of two layers: fibrous and cambium. It not only offers additional protection but also plays a crucial role in the skull's nutrient supply and bone repair processes.
