Once again my attempt to heighten awareness of the talents of a great singer/songwriter...CTW. Also to bring enjoyment and some measure of pleasure to long standing fans and admirers of CTW's work and enduring legacy.
This is a particularly poignant and melancholic song composed I feel with great sincerity and feeling...I hope my personal efforts in some way come close to doing it justice. This is also esp dedicated to my friend Cass once more who brought this song back into my consciousness..deeply endebted.
Never forget the past and live within the present with an eye to the future!
Pax to all my friends...enjoy.

A DAY TO MYSELF
***************
It's all so different now
From just a few weeks ago
When April was about to smile on England
And I had to go
So here I am again
Far from where the blackbird sings
And lanes I love to walk along
Lost i my thoughts
And what of you my love
Though you're so far away
Yet so close to me in all I do and see
And so on my day off
I could have chosen monuments
Historic chateau,palaces
Or finding ways of improving my French
Instead I wandered out alone
Here where woods and fields abound
And in a quiet corner found the resting place
Of English soldiers killed in war
And what of them my love
Who died so far from home
No last farewell kiss
All that remains is this
It makes me feel so ashamed to feel alone
Whatever would they think of me
For I shall see my love again
It's all so different now
From those few years ago
When April smiled so sweetly still
And they had to go

If Clifford T Ward had composed only this song, he would still deserve to be recognised as the greatest English songwriter of the 20th century. In this century the spirit of the English people is dormant, stifled by the upsurge of mediocrity and the threat to freedom and tolerance.

I was lucky to meet and have a few words with Clifford twice. I'm over 60 now and my friend James Dalton introduced me to Clifford's music when i was in my late teens. I loved Clifford's music from first hearing it. I had every LP and knew every song, his lyrics were so great. He could tell a story in every song, i feel so lucky to have told him so. The last time i spoke with Clifford was shortly before his death. He was in Dublin with a band who playing his music, he was confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak, so he was at a disadvantage, all he could do was accept praise for his brilliance which i gave in abundance and tried to convey my total respect and admiration for him and his music.

I was about 3 years behind Clifford at school in Stourport-on-Severn and I remember him performing on stage there as Cliff Ward & the Cruisers! I've been so lucky in my life with no discernible talents I've produced 3 great children, one of whom is a very talented professional singer. How cruel life can be, Clifford had a great gift yet was called away so soon; too soon; too young . . . . . .

When I was in the Army a few years ago, I was in Italy on an exercise and we came across a small walled cemetery that contained the graves of about 20 odd British soldiers. They were all under the age of 23, which was around the age of us. It made us think - and they were a long way from home!

As a young boy I listened to his music and they formed my spirit and great feeling of debt that is owed by us all to those who died so that we can live...free. Clifford T ward was a brilliant song writer, story teller, poet and explainer of the simple truths in life. He told how we should all feel and behave, hope dream and love...and his music now refound will live again in my heart. Last weekend before church parade I played this beautiful, moving songs to my daughters to explain to them what this day meant to me and how he shaped my thoughts. How they could see their granddad and his father who were in the army. And thanks to sapsie, how beautifully video can show the story of an artists vision. My girls came back from that service with a different view and instead of leaving after the laying of wreaths wanted to come inside for the service to hear the vicar describe her grandfathers little book of black crosses he left in his padres last rights brief case. Too many acts of last farewell to write down all the thousands of names. How he returned from that dreadful war a different cold and distant man. And then I remembered my grandfather was also a padre in that terrible conflict...and though I didn't know him as a little boy I now see him in a totally different light. You see it wasn't only those who didn't come back who were lost, some came back but were forgotten in their own living turmoil. And now I read clifford T ward isn't with us any more. How sad, what a loss, but I can tell you he still live on inside the heart of this little boy.
