Irfanview is free software for Windows computers. Allows complete cropping control and color adjustments. I find it easier to alter the photo (either scanned or phone foto) and then just upload it. Ancestry has a LONG way to go to match the versatility of this program. But I do like the multiple-photos-at-once capability.

I love the expression stat with what you have and improve as you go. I agree there are some features that I would like to see Ancestry have. But if they don't start somewhere they can't improve. So, as consumers, we need to try lots of options to find the ones that work. Thanks for your tip.

I’ve used my iPad and iPhone to do this quite a lot and find the results to be very good if you can get the lighting right. I prefer to do one photo at a time and all of the cropping and rotating myself though. I’ve found the results to be almost indistinguishable from using a scanner for most purposes, but that didn’t stop someone from calling me an idiot in a Facebook forum for resorting to it.😆

With the ones in the magnetic albums you can always pull back the clear cover and the glare won't be as bad.

Really informative on a new Ancestry app feature that will save you the trouble of carrying a flatbed scanner to visit your relatives and allow you to capture memories as part of data gathering.

What about taking a screen shot and cropping before enhancing? Especially if you are sure to note the source?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
Sure. That would work. I was trying to stay within the app. Meaning, the Yearbook photos were brought in while saving them while doing research. Then, scanning the images using Ancestry's new features. We could use the 'upload from phone' feature to add a screen shot to be sure. Great idea for those who want to go that route.

What do you recommend for adding the information on the back of old photos? Do you add that as an additional photo and name it to accompany the front, or add the text as a description? Or, is there a better way?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
I would do two things: 1. Copy the back of the photo (because you could be preserving handwritings of a loved one.) 2. Key in the information into the photo description boxes.

Taking photos of the photos in the “magnetic” album, why didn’t you peel back the clear plastic sheet to deal with the glare?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I did peel back the cover. The glare is from three different light sources in my studio. Couple that with the reflective nature of many prints (many are glossy and not matte finish) and you have the problems I showed. It's like taking photos of reflective gravestones and you have to be aware of the glare so you're not in the gravestone., Yikes! So, while I didn't demonstrate a perfect photographing performance, I showed what an 'average person' would do and then invited people to learn more or make a different decision.

You're not the only one saying this. When I asked Ancestry about it, they keep telling me the edit button is on the screen when you click into the image. If it's not, then please help me by sending a screenshot to Ancestry's support staff. Let them know what you're not seeing. It's possible there is some kind of bug they aren't aware of. Since I don't work for the company, I'm an independent educator, that's all I can offer. (Though I wish I could fix it for you.) Fingers crossed it gets fixed because I would love not to be the only one who can make it work.
