For you DIYers out there, the first part of this video will be invaluable for you because all you need is your ear. What does an engine sound like during cranking with low compression on one or more cylinders?
Tests shown
- cranking compression sound test
- relative compression test with a scope
- how to sync a relative compression pattern with an ignition event to ID specific cylinders

Awesome addition/refresh to the relative compression test videos. I learned this trick from your channel and have been using it since I bought a vantage pro and low current amp probe after watching your videos. Ive been trying to isolate a lean misfire situation for close to a month now (I'm not a mechanic, I'm a driveway mechanic when I'm forced to be), in the process installing: New spark plugs New plug wires New MAP sensor New EGR valve and gasket New distributor cap New distributor ring seal New distributor rotor New upstream o2 sensor New downstream o2 sensor New PCV valve New various vacuum hoses In my 2000 4cyl accord with 360k miles, and now after watching the first minute or two of this video, have finally diagnosed it as low compression on cyl 4. It took me literally 5 minutes, I paused the video, got dressed, grabbed my keys, unplugged my distributor and cranked it over. It was even more pronounced than the car in your video. Now I don't know if it'll ever see that 400k mark, and I'm sure it's due to rings, and a variety of oil leaks Ive been trying to plug like the little Dutch boy. Great video, thanks for posting it...

Just had one of these with the exact same problem come into my shop last week. Did the same thing with the cranking compression/starter current draw test with my Pico (that I learned from your channel). Chrysler has extended the warranty on these for replacing the cylinder heads for this problem, and the customer should check with the dealer to see if this car could have the heads replaced for free before they tear into it.

Very nice video Paul! Those new 3.6L from Chrysler had valve issues on the Bank 2 cylinder head. Girlfriend owns a 2013 200s with that engine and received a letter from Chrysler giving her a extended warranty up to 150K miles on that cylinder head. I'm willing to bet that is the issue. Had 2 of these town and country's head to the dealer for this issue also. But all in all great video my man!

Done a bunch of these heads on both the 3.6 and the older 3.7. Dealer workflow is verify that it is not the coil pack, sparkplug or fuel injector. If it is none of those then do a leak down test. If more than 25% leak down, replace head on misfiring bank. The dealer scan tool does a bit better job at seeing the misfires to find the offending cylinder.

Paul in the description you show both the low amp probe and the High amp probe. I see you use the Snap on one. Does the Snap on one incorporate both High and low amps in one unit or is it just the one you have. If that is the case which is the one most commonly used for lab scope tests.

Hmm, wondering about those misfire counters. Might it be that they did not show nothing because of the low compression? Since ECM is monitoring cylinder contribution and low compression cylinders do not slow the crank down as much.

Careful a broken valve sping, or a launched pushrod could show up as a higher compression on a companion cylinder. Ive also used a regular test lead and hold it near a coil topickup a ignition event. (NOTRECOMENDED it could kill your scopem but will work in a pinch)
@ScannerDanner

Agree, not the recommended test lead for that COP probe.

Nice one, Paul! If you dont have COP pickup handy, then is it easyer to get to PCM on this one, for timeing or the sourse it self coils/injectors,(or wire harnes/connectors)... ? Reason why i ask is that the newer and newer the car gets in here where i work, it looks like its easyer to get the ECM/PCM, then the sourse on what ever it is. All is shealded for some reason.....

I beleive that there is a extented warranty for this issue. The cylinder head will have to be replaced. All for free. X56 recall if I remember correctly This is a common issue with this engine. However this engine is making noise like it has a bad set of lifters. On the 3.6 if the oil isn't changed often enough they wipe out the cams and the lifters get replaced also.

Man, busting my chops. I know, I know, you guys wanted the whole thing. I just couldn't bring it on this one and I wanted another, newer version of how to perform a relative compression test video for my class, so this was it. Thanks Oz

On VW/Audi 2.8l engines I know if that engine floods out it washes the rings to the point where it sounds like ZERO compression (like the timing belt is off or the spark plugs are removed). Just something to watch out for.

Great info. It would be nice if we could find out what the problem was. Being two adjacent cylinders, I would guess a head gasket.

I know. I'm sorry. As I told another guy. This was all I could do this particular day. It was show this or nothing. I wanted an updated, relative compression test video for my class anyway, so this was it. The last one I showed using the Verus was a waste spark system and I synced it using some stupid adapter Snap-on sold (SIA 2000). That thing was a piece of crap.

I suppose with a common rail diesel one can get a pulse of an injector to mark the cylinder?

pull the plug wires one by one when your cranking it with the scope on,, the high peaks are the bad ones

Please guide me on what I should be looking forward to as you cranked the engine to verify if there is compression or not in the car and others?
@ScannerDanner

Single cylinder with no compression is what you're listening for. So single cylinder misfiring. If you have a no start, this isn't your test

My Jeep's got this engine and misfiring on 6 too :( I was hopeful that it wasn't a compression issue when I did a compression test and it was still reading roughly 120 PSI... But cranking sounds just like this.
@ScannerDanner

Yeah you can't go by a compression gauge for this problem because sometimes it is good, so your manual gauge will not pick it up because of the check valve

In the description you show both the low amp probe and the High amp probe. I see you use the Snap on one. Does the Snap on one incorporate both High and low amps in one unit or is it just the one you have. If that is the case which is the one most commonly used for lab scope tests. REPLY
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 жыл бұрын
The Snap-on one I am using is a low amp probe and you will pay 4 times as much for the same amp probe I have listed. The reason I also listed a high amp probe, is with the low amp probe you are limited by the size of the jaws (wire size) and it will not read more than 250 amps.

you will get by with 90% of the testing you need to do on cars with the low amp probe

Newbie question: if a car doesn't have a clear flood mode, what is the best way to disable the fuel injectors for the relative compression test? Pull fuel pump fuse?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 жыл бұрын
great question! Yes, disable the fuel pump, just be sure that when you do that, that you are not also disabling the ignition system if you are using that as a sync like I did in this video

Global disable shows on screen, so misfire detection disabled, may be fuel level low 😊

Thanks for the reply. I've done a bit of sub work and one thing workshop owners expected of my report was they could read it and then call the customer and give them some ball park on time, cost and whats wrong, not have to put another tech on it to do more tests to find out that. You can tell him its 2 down cylinders but for quoting purposes he would likely need to know if its top or bottom end, or perhaps overhead valve train. A look at the oil cap off for blow by and a vac gauge on the intake to look for valves narrows it down enough to then quote a full engine or just heads. My prime objective was making sure my report gave the information they needed to quote the job directly from it the moment i handed it over worked well for them. A lot of cases might need more than instrument testing to quote but more often with a few hand held instruments it could be narrowed down enough.
