Just bought them, and as a meindl/lowa/hanwag user for years, I am astonished by the comfort, breathability and this unknown (to me) mix of lighteness and rigidity, all with a cushion style attack on hard surfaces. A must have !

Brilliant review, such a nice contrast to the “retailer reviews” which just spend 10 minutes reading the website info, or some 20kg too heavy KZfaq 🇺🇸 person who knows zip! 10/10 presentation & useful detailed information such as fit details, sole stiffness/ cushioning, flex zones, wear characteristics& ankle flex zones.👌 ( Hey Scarpa… how about a hd version to improve on weight& breathability/ prevent the interior fabrics getting soaked)???

Just subscribed, Great video! Thank you! My Salomon Quest 4 GTX started failing me as toe cap is coming apart and waterproofness is getting worse day by day. Although, gotta admit I’ve been using them heavily on various terrains and weather conditions since I got them (1 year). Now, I am looking for a new pair of rugged boots that for long, multi-day hikes, backpacking… One thing I loved about Salomons was they were extremely comfortable! but they died early. I came across with stiffness being advantageous when comes to backpacking, trekkings. But I can’t understand how a stiffer boot would be comfortable on feet for multi day long treks. Wouldn't stiffness cause discomfort to feet over long multi day trekkings? I came across with two models: Mammut Trovat Tour High GTX and this Scarpa Mescalito TRK GTX. I feel like Scarpa is more flexible but less rugged, and Mammut seems more solid built and a more rugged boot, a bit stiffer. Can't decide between these too... Any ideas on this? What do you recommend?

Hi Arda Outdoors,I have heard the 'complaint' about the Salomon quite a lot. I have not tested the Mammuts but in build they look a lot like the Scarpa's. They stiffer than most hiking boots. It all depends on fit 😉. Where are you from? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@sdemosi
@sdemosi Жыл бұрын
I've actually bought both these boots and I kept the Scarpa's and sold the Trovat. The Mammut are a well made and seemingly bomb proof boot with lots of memory foam padding, nicely detailed tough nubuck and a good sole for trekking through mountains. When wearing the mammut you feel you can simply kick any obstacle out of your way. My wife called them "feet tanks" 😁 She wears the Trovat Tours as Mammut are her favorite boot. My size is 12.5 UK and in the 13UK Mammut that fit me better they felt cumbersome but very protective. If you want the most protective boot then you should consider the Mammut. The cushioning of the sole is much better in the Mammut. It is a boot for horrible wet winter conditions and easily stiff enough for a C1 crampon. I stopped wearing them however due to their bulky fit and a friend really liked them so took them off my hands. I can wear the Scarpa in my regular size 48 and they fit great. They're lighter and more nimble. I could scramble in them. They're still well made of course. They offer a similar feel to the Zodiac Tech but with better cushioning and without crampon support. I feel I can move quickly in them. I'm used to Scarpa hard soles. These are like pillows by comparison with the Zodiac Tech. I've actually done my fastest times on various hill and low level mountain walks with the Trks the last few weeks. It depends what you want and how you find the Scarpa fit versus Mammut but for me the Scarpa worked better.

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews people have different expectations of course. My brother swears by Meindl Islands in Active and Rock guises. But he has size 15 UK feet, boots are special order and he wants a boot that lasts a long time. Durability is more important than anything except comfort. I'll sacrifice some durability for weight and performance as UK 12.5 or even 13 is more readily available.

Hello My last two pair of boots both have failed at the same spot, the front outer part where the rand meets the upper/leather/nubuck. It was Lowa's Renegade and Salomon's Quest 4. I honestly don't know what the issue is because I didn't even hike that much with them I think. The soles were very lightly worn when the failures happened after roughly a year and a half of use. I am looking at this model as well as the Zodiac Tech and the Salewa's Mountain Trainer, basically a shoe where the rubber rand is either all around the shoe or at least half the length of it. I am undecided between this model and the Mountain Trainer, I live in Hungary so not much high mountains here but I do plan to take some vacations to the Tatras and/or the Dinaric Alps.

I understand that the midsole is made of polyurethane, but I am concerned about its long-term durability as it will disintegrate and peel off due to hydrolysis caused by rain, mud, washing, and even if the shoe is unused, reaction with moisture in the air.

Problem of the microporous membranes (Teflon (Gore-Tex), PU, etc.) are wetness in Grass and streams or creeks which have a Mix incl. natural tensides, which in Most Cases Grass has and creeks with dead leaves as Well. The Fishermen's friend are Sympatex, which is equipped with hydrophil lining and the membrane itself is hydrophob (on it's outer side), while transporting any wetness from inside to outside by a chemical process. The more you sweat at Sympatex the better is the Performance. Gore-Tex is Not Fishermen's best friend at is Prone to saltwater. In many Cases the weather-proofness of Gore-Tex has it's remaining Backup in the thin microporous inner membrane Out of streched PU. Sympatex is Not Streched PU it is doped PU. Dermizax by Toray is similiar to Sympatex also a doped membrane and Not a streched Material Like Gore-Tex, which is Not monolithic and a Hybrid membrane instead: Teflon+(thin)PU. E.g. eVent is monolithic membrane Just coated (streched) Teflon fliliament. This is prone to saltwater and dust/particles...wash weekly....or you get wet as there is No thin layer of streched PU....dust/particles get wet and soak the wetness thru the coated Teflon fliliament...Go for Sympatex/Dermizax...if you can as nothing IS as cut- and tear-resistant Like Gore-Tex Pro Shell.
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews Жыл бұрын
Oh yes, pores in the membrane can be blocked by dirt. Sympatex/Dermizax work in an other way and I prefer them above Gore but.... No Mescalito's in Sympatex/Dermizax (rare in shoes anyway) and so I end up with Gore. Thanks for commenting again! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! cheers, Gijs

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews all Grisport for Brand Grisport and "BAAK Dog Walker" with Membrane have Sympatex only. Advantage at BAAK Dog Walker with Membrane: These are leather Grease-treated Nubuk leather. Most potentially Not pure vegan tanned, which is less resilient leather. So the leather grease used is Part of the leather tanning. Just waxed Nubuk is Prone to get the leather tanning incl. the treatment for getting and staying hydrophobouse washed Out by wetness. Gore-Tex goes with waxed Nubuk only. Scarpa has a 2nd Membrane as Well and Like Zamberlan they use somekind of Sil-Proof in Combo with membrane even for Velours and Split leather and Not the full-grain leather models only. 3rd in the Sil-Proof Group is Alte-Berg even Getting the leather noe from Italy as the Origin suppliers closed in UK. Alt-Berg I think also offers Models with Sympatex. Bär does Not need membrane for their Bergkomfort High-Cut Boots Like Prabos. The Boots are sealed at the stichings Like the adidas SuperTrekking from 1978 and other more heavier Boots without membranes Like all Combat Boots of the German Bundeswehr (2kg + the pair....😁😎). Gore-Tex offered Meindl to get closer to the adidas SuperTrekking 1978 with their Meindl Island GTX, which was the First Boot with Gore-Tex. No sealing of the stichings and No heavier leather lining, which the adidas SuperTrekking 1978 offered Like the Limited Edition of 2010. Gore-Tex is Just Weight reduction. Sympatex is Lifting the Boots to be wetness-proof while Gore-Tex Boots are Weather-Proof only.

Shoe reviews are a nice idea: BUT since there are different shapes of feet its almost useless unless you have the same foot shape as the youtuber. How often I had customers in the store for a hiking shoe fitting and had to overcome first literaly unfitting shoe recomondations. (Very anoing. Since some fixate on a friends advice with very slim feet and they have wide feet. ) For scarpa you need a slimer heel and a litle wider part in the toe area while the toes go in a sharp angle. You are looking for the egyptian shape. If you see feet as often as I did you spot the "scarpa feet" very quickly. If I see a foot shape (always my first step.) and determined the correct size (not what customers think - thats 90%off), the intended purpose its easy to get it right. But it starts all with a foot shape that fits the shoe shape not vise versa. Its important to get it right. You can get quite a damage on something essential for your health and means of earning your livelyhood. Hiking means wandering far off good immediat medical care or worse a care you understand well enough. Its a safty device not a style item as some customers misunderstand. If the "ugly" one is right for your feet, than take it over the "nice" one which fits only mediocre.

I bought a pair of these, and they’re utterly rubbish. Right boot had a sharp piece of metal wire sticking out of the back of the heel cup area that I cut my finger on. Left boot - the rubber rand separated from the boot after only two day hikes / 13 days after purchase. The left boot’s heel cup area also seemed to be constructed / fixed to the boot faultily, as after an hour or so of hiking, it started to dig into the back of my Achilles heel area - this didn’t happen with the right boot, neither has it happened with any other boots I’ve owned: previous Scarpas, La Sportivas, Salomon’s or Hokas. The left boot also had a leak. They’re rubbish boots, and whilst the uppers might be virtue-signalled by Scarpa as being made from recycled whatever, perhaps they could have concentrated on the material used in the uppers actually meeting functional requirements - it has no suppleness to it whatsoever, and creases like a piece of cardboard where one’s toes bend from only a few steps into one’s first walk in them. Utter rubbish - don’t believe the reviews by retailers or KZfaqrs who are incentivised never to give an honest negative opinion - the reality is, they’re expensive junk.

Hello Lord (or should I write My Lord?), I'm sorry to read this, but I've run many, many miles in these boots in very different conditions and they're still going strong. So before you blame the rest of the world for 'crap' - shoes, retailers, me and other KZfaqrs or reviewers - maybe you should go back to the store you bought them from and tell them what happened and see what they - or Scarpa - do with it. Maybe it's just bad production, or maybe someone had a bad day. It happens. Then: share your experiences as a customer and maybe we can learn from that. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
