American Airlines 737-800 taking off from Atlanta International Airport going to MIA in thunderstorms. We had to wait 4 and a half hours to finally get in the air.

Oh yeah. Experienced that last year, being on a plane for the first time as a 30 yo and being nervous as *beep*. Did not have the faintest clue about how all that stuff worked at an airport, no idea that (what my dad told me, being a former aviation-mechanic with great interest in actually flying planes) they not always stop anymore after taxiing to the runway and without warning I was thrown into my seat as thrust was unleashed. And the weather. We've had a few grey, overcast days in a row already before I would fly from Schiphol Airport. No rain or whatever, just grey, with cloud-bases somewhere around 400 meter or so. Take-off was around 9:30 and being winter, sun was only up for 45 minutes. Disappointed that, on my first flight ever, my look to the outside world had vanished so quickly after leaving ground... and then the cabin filled with this golden light as we breached the clouds and all I could see was a flat, fluffy cloudscape with this unearthly blue sky above me. I could not have had a more beautiful maidenflight.

I like the part where the plane gets above the clouds. There’s something about it that feels safe. I’m terrified of flying but since I’ll be on a plane for about 9 hours I’ve been watching a lot of these videos.
@happycook6737

These videos show extremes! You can have nice smooth flights too. For a 9 hour flight, I wear stretchy pants, t-shirt, and front zip hoodie. Have a spare set in carry-on. I keep first aid kit with tylenol, advil, bandaid, alcohol prep pad, pepto bismol, antidiarrheal, UTI antibiotics, a pen, wipes, disposable gloves (for toilet trip), puzzle book (turbulence plan), 3 garbage bags (hold soiled clothes, give to vomiting neighbor, put on my seat if seat is wet, etc. I then feel prepared. The wet seat happened to me on UA LAX-PVG. Sold out plane no chance of new seat. Awful but changed into my spare clothes and put garbage bag barrier. UA gave me $25 voucher for "inconvenience". I was so mad as obviously someone had pissed that seat. They bring in plane and fly it back out 3 hours later like a bus going in circles.

I’m a nervous flyers and one day I was flying to Seattle and happen to sit next to a pilot going on his vacation with his wife. He saw how scared I was and after few words he just started narrating to me what the pilots are working on now and why engines are making certain sounds etc. it was very comforting and fun actually. I’m a rational person but when it comes to flying I just get a fear for no reason. Kudos to all the awesome pilots

Great observation. That appears to be a Runway 8L departure into the rising sun. Normally you would make a mild right turn to 157.5 degrees or so to fly to MIA. Since the airport is handling departure traffic, there is possible traffic from the other runways. Hence the reason for the turn to the left. Not a scary departure at all. The clouds may look ominous, but the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) has Doppler radar available with wind shear data and pilots can't fly until it is safe. Cheers!

Actually what the pilot did was thread the needle. He ran between active storm cells and kept climbing at a high rate of assent in a circular pattern until he could achieve 38 thousand feet as soon as possible in order to avoid any cell activity which he masterfully did all while obeying traffic control. There was little chop and no rain on the window. He played dodge ball with nature and won.

He certainly did! I'm not one to play with fire in an aircraft. You will never see me paving my way through individual cells of thunderstorms. You'd see me sitting on the tarmac waiting it out. This pilot certainly was one of those daring kind.

I do not like attempting to "thread the needle" in any aircraft. There is an abundance of opportunities for things to go awry, something pilots normally cannot afford. As you know, the turbulence experienced in thunderstorm cells is catastrophic, enough to rip an aircraft into smithereens. I've experienced my fair share of turbulence, just never near any convective activity. I'm not one to state this, but this pilot may have been a lucky fella.

Everything about this video punctuates almost every single thing I love about airline travel. The busy scene at the airport; the beautiful array of multi-colored lights on the tarmac, runway, terminals, parking lots, other airplanes; the roar of the engines and the speed of takeoff; the unobstructed views you get of Mother Nature's canvas: the sky. Such stunning colors in the clouds and in the sunset, and details no painter could ever recreate. This is Nirvana.

Those sorts of dark clouds send shivers through me. Last year I saw the same clouds right before a derecho raced through my area, which had already weakened somewhat but was still a terrifying looking wall of charcoal gray clouds. Expect very strong wind driven torrential rain and lots of lightning. Sometimes hail and tornadoes accompany these intense storms, especially if you notice a green-ish tinge to the clouds.

I had learned how to deal with turbulence and flying around or through thunderstorms since I was 7 years old. That meant turbulence in Stratocruisers, Constellations and Super Constellations, DC-6's and after these, the jets that replaced the props. I can say it was something to watch the wings of a DC-6B moving up and down in turbulence like your car going over a bumpy road. WHAT A RIDE!!

I remember flying over the west coast of Africa at 3am (local time), there was a massive thunderstorm over to the east. The pilot climbed and went round the storm. It was stunning, the whole night sky was lit up by flashes of lightning.

Thunderstorm tops are typically 30,000 to 40,000 feet above the surface, and in the U.S. even the most powerful thunderstorms rarely build above 65,000 feet. Tropical thunderstorms, somewhat higher, rarely exceed 72,000 feet.

I flew into Atlanta right after thunderstorms had just moved through and the air was still quite turbulent. The flight attendants called it a "Six Flags landing". Before landing, I saw a girl try to get to the lavatory after being told repeatedly to stay seated and buckled in. She got launched almost up to the ceiling, striking a perfect Superman pose, before crashing down to the floor of the cabin. Thanks for sharing.

I hate flying in thunderstorms. Last time I did, it was nighttime, there was bad turbulence and I could see the lightning bolts flashing outside the windows. I was on an Airbus A-319 and it was just shaking. I was so glad when we landed. You had a much more beautiful view than I did, though. Loved the video.

its very noisy when engines are in full power. but it quiets down as we climb up. do the pilots reduce the power or its just the sound getting muffled in the air?
@yankeefan10000000
@yankeefan10000000 10 жыл бұрын
A plane usually takes off with close to max thrust (usually a little de-rated), but once they get around 1000-1500 ft they reduce the throttle to not wear out the engines too much, while also lowering the nose. At this "acceleration height" they gain speed while not climbing as fast, and then they begin to climb again. They just go max thrust up to the accel height just in case there's a engine issue or something, pilots try to get as high as possible and as quick as possible. Hope this helps!

NoisyBoy This is true for the engine sound - however the noise in the cabin actually increases throughout the climb as the speed of the air hitting the frame increases - but you don't necessarily feel that, because at the same time your ears become a little bit blocked by the pressure. During descent, if you swallow saliva or if you decompress, you will hear a neat increase in "volume" due to your ears re-adapting to the pressure.
@noisyboy178
@noisyboy178 10 жыл бұрын
yeah if the ears pop. or whatever they call it! i have noticed that. i have also noticed steep falling like feeling like slight weightless feeling only for a second or two when you start to descend.its hard to explain. i mean i can observe that the descend is in stages and they take it down. then they stop at certain altitudes. then take it down further do some turns. i can feel the downward movement. some people are ignorant to all this. but i am kinda sensitive. its weird and not a fun feeling. i am not scared to fly but i don't love all this stuff lol.
