I flew home after graduating from Ramp training for my new job, and we flew through the worst thunderstorm of my life. You can even see a power flash when we line up on Runway 35L, I could've sworn their was a tornado with the amount of wind their was hitting our Boeing 737-823. We flew American Airlines 1446 out of Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) back home to Tulsa (TUL). We also have been hit by lightning twice, and possibly more times according to one of the crew members aboard as multiple passengers claim to see lightning strike the nose, left (#1) side winglet, and tail. Tell me what y'all think, Enjoy!

Couple things to know about thunderstorms. The major risks are heavy precip, hail, and severe turbulence. Lightning is also a factor but it rarely is an issue for airplanes. The FAA has a well known recommendation to remain at least 20 nautical miles away from thunderstorms. So while you can see lightning all over this video, the plane itself is a safe distance from the actual storm cell as demonstrated by the smooth flight in the video. Remember these planes are flown by two very experienced pilots and are have the support of their company’s dispatch team and ATC. They are flying IFR and would never be released for takeoff if there was an actual threat. Once airborne, they have tools onboard to see ground based and airborne radar and know up to the minute what is in front of them many miles out, in addition to ATC providing aircraft separation and weather vectors.

Okay, but then 1) why do planes get hit by lightnings regularly if they are at least 20 miles away? The thing with thunderstorms is that it is hard to predict where it moves and where it would hit. 2) why do pilots do fly through bad weather sometimes even if there is only minimal chance of getting struck by lightning or hail or severe turbulence? Shouldn‘t safety be more important than economical interests?

I flew back to London from the Dominican Republic this morning. Ended up going through the side of a tropical cyclone that was happening somewhere over the Atlantic. Severe turbulence and lightening both sides of the plane. When the cabin crew look worried you know it’s not good. Respect to the pilots for getting us home safe because that was one scary flight!

@@megadethly Severity of Turbulence For the purpose of reporting and forecasting of air turbulence, it is graded on a relative scale, according to its perceived or potential effect on a 'typical' aircraft, as Light, Moderate, Severe and Extreme. Light turbulence is the least severe, with slight, erratic changes in attitude and/or altitude. - Moderate turbulence is similar to light turbulence, but of greater intensity - variations in speed as well as altitude and attitude may occur but the aircraft remains in control all the time. - Severe turbulence is characterized by large, abrupt changes in attitude and altitude with large variations in airspeed. There may be brief periods where effective control of the aircraft is impossible. Loose objects may move around the cabin and damage to aircraft structures may occur. - Extreme turbulence is capable of causing structural damage and resulting directly in prolonged, possibly terminal, loss of control of the aircraft.

Some context here for anyone who might be wondering what kind of maniac pilot takes off into a thunderstorm. They never flew through a thunderstorm…not even close. Notice how smooth the flight is. All modern airliners (and even many smaller airplanes) are equipped with advanced weather radar so if their flight path happens to take them through a storm, they’ll shimmy around it…you can actually find videos on KZfaq of weather radar with dozens of airplanes dipping around storms, etc. You know how thunderstorms always look crazier at night? That’s because you see all of the little flashes in the distance that are obscured during the day. That’s what you’re seeing here. The fact that there was minimal turbulence means the convective air (the stuff you NEVER wanna fly through…A380, Piper Tomahawk, doesn’t matter…icky death awaits) was *well* off in the distance. They were never in any danger.

Reality is the pilots are just navigators through most of the flight. They look at radar, get instructions from ATC, and “tell” the aircraft where to go through Autopilot. The true heroes are the designers and builders of these amazing aircraft who put them through tests most aircraft will never experience in a real flight. As scary and uncomfortable as these flights may be, the airplane is designed to withstand so much more.

Nice lightning storm! I have to say that from the video the flight appears to be pretty smooth. That's nice. I'm an experienced flyer, but I have to say that flying at night in significantly turbulent conditions is never easy on me. Lightning doesn't bother me so much. But I had a recent flight out of Boston after dark that had some long lasting and pretty strong turbulence. I can handle most turbulence. But when it starts to throw you around in your seat and it doesn't dissipate, then I act calm but in reality my heart starts racing.

Good grief! To think how fast the plane is traveling and the storm goes on and on! Before reading about this, I wondered where it was---I guessed somewhere in the southern midwest. I see I was right---Dallas to Tulsa---tornado alley to be sure. Happy the plane made it through safely. Great video! I once was on a plane going from Minneapolis back to San Diego when, just before the plane taxied on the runway to take off, a violent thunderstorm hit. We did not take off for just over an hour---we all sat on the airplane watching the storm--wind, rain and wild lightning. That was a long and muggy experience.

Well, you may feel better being in a plane (and that's perfect fine. I'm not arguing like some of these idiots on here) but my choice is, and always will be, staying on the ground if possible. I can lose every tire on my vehicle and still live through it. If you lose even part of the tail, or your hydraulics for instance, you're coming down.
@rn2811
@rn2811 11 ай бұрын
Having structural failure on an aircraft is extremely rare if you look at the statistics and losing your hydraulics also isn’t going to make an aircraft fall out of the sky. Now losing all 4 tires while cruising down a highway….that’d be interesting to see that outcome.

Professional pilots don’t fly through thunderstorms. Yes, on occasion, they blunder into one or get too close. Depending on the severity of a storm or a line of storms, the minimum distance is 20 miles of deviation. That doesn’t mean you won’t experience some turbulence. Lighting from a storm that is no where close to the airplane can seem like it is. Especially if you’re flying in clouds.

as long as you are not in a microburst area or any of the severe winds, youll be fine. That would be a little scary for sure, but I guess they do it all the time.

I fly a lot and even I would need a diaper change after a flight like this one.

That wasn't so bad. It's wind shears that can ruin your whole day.

This is why I will never fly with American Airlines. Just look at their track record, especially at the ever-memorable December 16, 2014 flight from Seoul, South Korea to Dallas, Texas. There are many more. Just search for Turbulence aboard American or AA (for American Airlines) flights. Would you believe that they ignored the Japanese Weather Bureau when they were told by them not to fly in Japanese Airspace, because there was a very rapidly developing, severe storm with winds of 240 KMH. It was essentially a weather bomb, and it was also absolutely huge! People were tossed around for an hour, and there were 14 people hurt, and 4 had to be hospitalized. I strongly advise you never fly with them!

There was no tornado, just some flying near thunderstorms. That was not even bad.

They should of waited or cancel the flight.

No, they don't have to cancel the flight. Airplanes can still fly even if there's thunderstorm, so they don't to worry about that, because it's not a concern.

Logicamente o piloto deve ter tentado se desviar do vórtice dessa nuvem. Mesmo assim foi assustador.
