Well, there is not much point me writing up a long description here so just watch the movie!
If 15 minutes is too long then...
Go to 4:45 to see the scary lift.
Go to 7:05 to see the motor room.
Enjoy!
##WARNING - I'm an engineer by trade and I am aware of the dangers in this sort of environment. High voltages exist here which can KILL you if you touch the wrong thing. Also, NEVER touch any moving machinery, even if it is not moving at the time - it can start up without warning and easily sever your fingers!! Just be careful out there people! ###

Have you ever been caught in the machinery room by the management of the building?
@mrmattandmrchay

@danielrichardbond Hi, that thing attached to the big wheel is called an ENCODER. It reports how many turns the motor has done so that the controller can calculate where the lift is in the shaft. This is how the controller knows where to slow down and stop the lift. The encoder here is quite old, and they are usually fitted at the end of the motor, not on a belt. The batteries are more than likely to be for the lift alarm during a power cut. Hope that answers your questions :)

I worked as a maintenence man for my university back when I was enrolled and one of my responsibilities was elevator (lift) maintenance. ... The campus had all Dovers and a couple of 1960s Otis freight lifts.. The Dovers were all modernized but I am just happy there are other enthusiasts of lifts out there.... I am kinda a lone wolf with my love of them around my neck of the woods... So again Great Job and keep the videos coming Matt!

That looks fairly modern to me compared to some machine rooms I’ve seen. Are there any lifts still running with mercury arc rectifiers? Belsize Park deep level shelter still had them not that long ago, early 2000s maybe.

@produKtNZ I was watching for LEDs changing or relays operating as the lift (ascensore!!) was in motion, but I didn't see anything happening (only the floor display changing). If I did then I would have certainly moved the camera angle. I agree that it's interesting to watch the inputs and outputs to the controller changing state.

Was that 7 segment display on the board the floor display? It looked like it showed -1 when the lift was on floor 1 and 13 when it was up at the 16th floor. Is there an offset or something?

Wow, now that's a lift video! Don't think i would have gone in there alone but you got a great result. That control system looks a bit 80s or at most early 90s to me. Got any closeup photos of the board so you can see the date code on one of the components? I looked on Flickr but there's nothing on there yet. And by the way: love the intro :D Now all you have to do is to get Chay interested in lifts.

Theese are old italian FIAM lifts, they are now become very rare because of modernizations :( you actually was very lucky finding those ones in completely original conditions. I saw a lot of lifts like that but only 4 or 5 were original, by the way i am italian PS:the most scariest thing about the staff only lift is the door operator motor it sounds really creepy for me

This is a very modern lift mechanism. Some of the old ones are more interesting. I have seen some with thermionic valves in the control circuitry and cupboards full of switches and relays. Many of those ones had a cupboard full of spare parts as they were not simplified like this modern one. But still good to see.

Looks very simplified compared to the elevator system in my old workplace. 6 story parking ramp with TWO elevators side by side. The control room had racks of relays and was built in 1968. It was in operation till around 2005ish when the whole structure was demolished. Those machines ran on ac to dc converters with were of the motor/generator type. I spent some time up there watching it work. Kinda creepy but you get used to it......

I do work on that kind of panel but it’s a duplex. It’s in that condition as the Maintanance guy should do a better job. But it’s nearly all original. The encoder is fitted as an optional as its not a gearless motor. But it works better with it. Nice work though.

HMMMM, that's a good question. I'm not 100% sure, but my best guess is that it's an old over travel switch. If you see this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z-Bzaq-Ktre0pps.htmlm30s then after 5:30, see 6:43 - this is what I mean. It's a static cable attached to a switch. If the cable is pulled, over travel switch activates.

That is very true, or you possibly act dumb, point to the roof puzzled and say 'sala'? That way they might just think you are trying to find the roof to take some high rise photos! Also, judging by the completely exposed motor and brake, governor and the sheave I can't imagine safety is high on the list, don't forget the gap on the door! This my favourite vid of the channel and I think I've finally found the hotel to visit (though that will not be disclosed)

I suppose it's where the staff that make up the rooms (this is a hotel) keep the trolleys out of public view when they are waiting for the lift. There is either a light switch somewhere, or a PIR that would turn on the lights in that little lobby if I stepped out.

Fiam ? I know an extremely similar lift that the one you filmed, it is way smaller though. I always thought it was from the 70's but the lift was actually built in the 90's. They also built the lift in my apartment building in the 70's. Kone upgraded it slightly but the relay logic is original

Update: the original Fiam relay logic of the 70's lift in my apartment building might go away soon as the lift is glitching a lot when going up and the relay for the basement refuses to stay on (we need to hold the button to keep the relay on) plus there is an advice saying that the lift will be shutdown for the whole next week. Kone did the buttons and inner door upgrade in 2012, but now looks like the 45 years old relay logic needs to retire as well :/

It seems that you don’t have experience in old elevators especially FIAM or KONE. I worked on hundreds of them and they are safer than others . People who didn’t had experience on these can’t say they are scary. I worked on the early days of FIAM lifts and are still going strong since 45 years. On all lifts even known brands if installations are rubbish you can get a bad experience. If it’s the cheapest and worse lift installed properly it lasts a lifetime. I have been working on lifts for over 35 years including fabrication at workshop from doors to car to chassis to motor beds to brackets and go on site and install from a to z including electrical after fabrication of control panel. The worse lifts and complicated are otis. They got the name but not the product . I have seen broken motor gearboxes and beds crushed after testing emergency brakes so even the known brands are somehow crap. For me the best are IGV who used to do everything except motor and guide rails.
