I have heard the story of Amelia Earhart landing on Nikumaroro Island many times. That theory is very wide spread and excepted by most. But there are some problems with it. First of all the island is actually pretty far from Howland, if she didn't have enough gas to get to Howland, how could she make it to Nikumaroro? Also, the bones found were at first thought to be the bones of a short Caucasian male, but they went missing soon after they were examined. They were later found in a museum. They were looked at again and this time they said that they were most likely Amelia's. Soon after, they were lost again. What I don't get is how they were first thought to be a male's, then they are female's. Almost as if they were switched...
