Another time,my dad took me to a funeral, someone from his work,he was mingling with the other people, and I was sitting down waiting for him. An old man in a black suit came over and said,"Live your life to the fullest son,it's too short to waste it", then passed his hand over my head and walked off. I was about 5 i think,my dad came over, and told me to go and pay my respect to the guy in the coffin, I went over, looked in,and it was the same old man that was talking to me. For years I freaked out, couldn't sleep without the light on. Years later, I learned that. . That old man had a twin.

I grew up on the beach, on the east coat, Northland. I remember the first time I heard a tsunami warning on the radio as a child. I spent every night after that, for over a decade, lying awake at night, hearing the surf and dreading a tsunami. I have PTSD from that. Never felt an earthquake when growing up, never saw a tornado of any size. But a friend of mine died of skin cancer when he was 25. The farmer down the road did the same when was about 55. Another friend of mine has scars on her arms from skin cancer removal. I first encountered towering columns of merciless sandflies at Tutukaka while on a family trip, and have vowed to avoid any area with sandflies should I win that magical lottery and move back home. Sandflies are a variety of black fly, which means they bite chunks out of your flesh.

Lake Taupo, our largest lake, located in the middle of the North Island, is one big volcanic crater. When it blew 2,000 years ago it wiped out the forests in the central area (where the Desert Road passes through) and was recorded by the Greeks because they saw the glow and it darkened the skies for a long time.

Rotorua is actually in a volcanic caldera...,somehow we never ever worried about that, the earthquakes were a fact of life in the Bay of plenty, in the 60s when American kids were being nuclear bomb drills we were doing earthquake drills. Kids still do, just like fire drills, but they weren't super scary..

I've lost count of how many large (7+ magnitude) quakes I have "survived", the Seddon/Kaikoura double whammy was intensely insane. 2 minutes of being shaken off your feet crawling out the house the sound was total bonkers, the aftershocks for months afterwards were triggering. I remember eathquake drills at school. And we had tsunami evacuation drills, up the nearest hill. There are signs along the Whanganui river about tsunamis. I remember the rolling earthquake in NZ, I was in Wellington at the time, walking along the waterfront. I grabed a post and I felt it move from side to side. It was scary. Thankfully I wasn't in the multi story building I'd not long left, as that would be really scary as they sway from side to side. I remember it being 3 days for emergency kit. Maybe it's different where you're living. You're way better prepared than most people who don't bother at all. The UV is because of the hole in the ozone layer for NZ. That's what I was told. Ozone provides protection from UV.

You should get some old time Kiwis on to tell what its really about - you see us kiwis who have been around for 150 years dont concern ourselves with your scary things as they (except sandflies!!) are out of our control. NZ Life is about living - not worrying what may be. Yes - there are earth quakes - but there is also traffic accidents and all sorts of other things that can end is tears. You seem to have got the "kiwi attitude" and not worry about what you cant control - and enjoy what you have. Cheers

Talking about earthquakes here, one night my daughter and I decided to sleep in the lounge area (lazy weekend), and at 1-3am there was this violent shake of the house. I dang well tried to wake my daughter up (thinking safety - get out of the house) and her response was: mumbling what, what (sleep-talking). I was getting wild/hoha (meaning annoyed) cos she wouldnt't wake up. By the time the earthquake stopped and my daughter finally wakes up and goes "what Mum?", I said: "nevermind go back to sleep".....shesh!!!

I read the title and honestly couldn't think of any scary things in NZ. Most of the things you mention are only scary to people that have never lived in NZ. The only time I recall being scared was in the 70s,walking home from school when an earthquake hit,it was very violent and I wrapped my arms around a lamp post to stay on my feet. Oh man! you made NZ sound so scary! I live here and now you have me worried 🤣🤣🤣 I live on the coast and we don’t get tsunami warnings or sirens...the rule is...if it’s long and strong, get gone. But last time that happened I woke up but thought oh, please stop, I’m too tired to get up. But then friends and family from round the country start texting and telling us how there’s been a tsunami warning...so eventually I looked up the council website and saw the warning, called my neighbour and we drove up the hill. Called some other neighbours but meh...they weren’t bothering. Sat up the hill for an hour or so, got the all clear and went home again. Only the second time in my life I’ve moved for an earthquake/ tsunami warning though. If a ‘for real’ one hit I’d be under water before I got round to deciding to get out of bed. I suppose we’ve all gotta go some time...that’s what I tell myself......earthquakes are scary though not gonna lie, but you do get used to them, they don’t happen that often, and usually over pretty quick. Rather that than snakes *shudder*.

Been in Wellington all my life and only once got under cover and that was the big Kaikoura quake. I did think to myself that night that things were going to be bad. It started off as normal but then started to intensify. It would get stronger and stronger. I had to really brace myself in the doorway and hang on as the house creaked, twisted, rolled in every direction like your on a ride but it was for real. I recall saying to myself this must be the one we've been overdue for and to just hang on and hope for the best. It keep increasing in strength and then eased off quickly. That's the only time I've shat my pants here. All the other ones you just pause for a second or two and they go away and you carry on. Even in major earthquakes around the western world there are very few casualties really. You've got more chance of dying on a plane or car crash combined, than you would of an earthquake. It makes you aware of nature just as you guys said in the beginning

I do feel quite conscious that the Alpine Fault could easily give at any moment, and may very well in my life time. Love my walks by the lake here in Te Anau - with an extra bit of spice, wondering how it will be when chunks of mountain drop into the lake when the big one hits. My guess is that we won't even know about it until we meet St Peter. Have experienced 2 biggies - Doubtful Sound in 2009, and Kaikoura in 2016. Both 7.8 mag

Kids now in NZ can get their licence at 16, but when I was a teen, it was 15! Living on a farm I was learning to drive at 14. We lived up in the hills and our road was about 1km long. So, my folks would let me drive to the end of the road to teach me, and if it was quiet on the roads I was allowed to drive to the next bend on the main road (which was about 200m away). My little brother had to wait until it he was 16 (it changed about 3 years after I got my learners licence) and I was so nervous for him lol, both younger siblings had to wait that extra year and didn’t even know it used to be 15. Recently my little sis and I were talking about this and they were really surprised it used to be 15. I remember when it was changing to 16 and majority of the rural communities didn’t want it changed because a lot of the rural kids had after school commitments so removing their independence to drive themselves disrupted this.

In Wellington there are around 200 earthquakes or more a year. Most so undetectable, there is one though every 4 years that releases a slow amd more powerful quake but still nothing huge, just a slow release of energy. But it is criss crossed with faults. Mt Taranaki was used in the movie the last samurai. As it looks like the Tokyo mountain that is sacred to the Japanese. I forget the name of the mountain. The only name I can think of is Fujiyama but I'm unsure

I live in West Otago we have twilight so sun goes down slowly in summer have very little snow most years, it's gone within a couple of days and as I'm typing this it's 10° out at 9:30 pm. I lived in Brentwood Essex for 2½ years from 1976 - 79 you had IRA problems, Gnats like sand flies, and freezing winters. I married my wonderful English wife before returning home in 79 @18years old, it took a few years before she fully settled but would not live any where else now. Enjoy your selves

I was sent to check the state of a toilet block in the Florida Everglades, I applied repellent walked in, came straight back out and was bitten multiple times. Then I moved to NZ and there have been several locations where the sandflies have been even worse, I think the worst was Lake Rotoroa in the Nelson Lakes area, and Lake Paringa in Westland, although sometimes I only need to go in the garden to hang out the washing to get bitten.

I felt a tremor in 2005 when I thought my cousin pushed the couch I was sitting on... no that doesn't count. maybe a close encounter in 2012 when the tornado passed by my college in Mount Albert and hit north shore. up north takes the cake, at night its mosquitoes then day sandflies

Yeah when I was looking at buying property In NZ I'd see places in Taranaki and google map to see the proximity to the mountain itself and I'd be like hmm mmmm NO. Its a beautiful mountain and massive in real life and I love your view to it in the background tho. My place in Gisborne before I bought it I showed my husband the LIM or something with earthquake info for the area, since he's used to reading those bldg reports and he looked it up and down and said "No worse than where we are in San Francisco", so that was alright a risk for me being used to those. When I was growing up in NZ I never felt earthquakes. I'm comfortable where I am in Gisborne being tucked behind a hill in Kaiti it should steer a tsunami to downtown area I studied a topographical map, My place in Reefton makes me nervous though with the river behind the house, whenever I see the reports of heavy rains further north Im picturing the river rising, but I'll deal, so pretty with the trout. Isnt it funny when the old fellas come and tell you something about where youre building after youve built and not when you start, its like they wait to deliver the bad news the buggahs

Living near a volcano? Nope! Snow? Nope! California sucks. I lived there. I moved. I was in the Bay Area, during the 1989, Loma Prieta earthquake, about 20 miles from the epicenter.... It was violent. No thanks. Tsunami? Just stay away from the coast. Tornado? WTH! I live in Texas, but just a little too south for tornadoes. Growing up in Kentucky, We call them "Horseflies", and they BITE! Austria, France, Germany, and Italy, border Switzerland.
