Special thanks to Eliza for the work she did on the thumbnail. Please check out her awesome work here: www.artstation.com/elizakormendi
Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, has said that there is a single word... a single theme that can summarize each mainline game in the Metal Gear Solid saga. With that, I decided to look at each game in the series exclusively through the lens of their respective theme. Today, we will be looking at the single word/theme that summarizes Metal Gear Solid 3. That word is "scene".

Hmm, that's certainly food for thought, thanks for showing us that. To add to it, I would like to draw attention to the similarities between the emotions (The Cobras) and the five stages of grief, though I will admit I am reaching a bit to show parallels here, but I think it could add another layer of meaning to the game just like you originally pointed out with your comment.

Along with the other plethora of easter eggs, my favorite is that when you finish the game and access your memory card files, your save files' icons for MGS3 will turn into the Patriot gun and flowers similar to the one Snake laid down on her grave.

In an Industry of uniformity and standardization it's refreshing that Hideo Kojima games allow the opportunity for school yard stories to manifest from tiny little details that not everybody gets to uncover. Everyone has a unique experience in one way or another in his games. Even now many years later I see people do things in MGS2 that I had no idea were possible and I'm sure there are many more.

Wow, I though it was that by default. MGS3 was one of the 1st games I played on the PS2. So I never really had a reason to look up the memory card until it started getting full, and I had to choose things to delete.

MGS3 is so much more than it seems, in every sense. It’s just as much of a philosophical heavyweight as MGS2. It’s classic hyperreality, explored in the context of alternate history and espionage. The depth of this game is legendary for a reason - there’s always a hidden mechanic or easter egg a long-time player hasn’t found yet, and I think the metanarrative and philosophy of this game might be its last secret

Though I don't really play games that much anymore, I do believe that there is a place for them. I can say to those who think they nothing but wasted time, they don't know what they're talking about. I still remember MGS, and Son's of Liberty and now I want to play this one.

@@stevenwilliams1805 It was always older generations that claimed them as a waste of time. But that's always been the way when the younger generation finds a new way to express their art. Videogames became a way for the artists to create and for the fans to not just observe the art. They got to actively interact with it, without just observing it like paintings and sculptures in the past. I'm sure soon enough another form of expression will emerge, and we might be the ones to write it off as a waste of time. Totally missing the same aspect that our grandparents missed with videogames.

5:50 don't take for granted since I'm no historian but I've heard that thing with the missiles being obsolete was actually the official excuse at the time, probably so it wouldn't look like the US was bending to the USSR, and if this is true that was pretty clever

@ricardomiles2957
@ricardomiles2957 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZeranZeran it's much more complicated than that but yeah, and as far as I remember, the USSR positioning the missiles in Cuba was actually in retaliation on the US missiles in Turkey. In that scale, when someone brings a big stick, you must show that you have a equally bigger stick so you can negotiate about stick limits, because if someone brings a much bigger stick everyone is fucked and you can't risk in bringing a toy stick because if the other guys noticed he will go for you. And all the sticks can fuck millions of people at once

There’s also the story from that time when the world was almost destoyed. That the Russians got a false launch warning, but that one man decided it had to be false because he expected them to know a launch would mean retaliation and equal destruction, so he didn’t retaliate. Basicly saving the world. (Something like that, don’t quote me on it.)

Yeah it's Snake Eater in every sense. It's Snake literally eating snakes during Operation Snake Eater, it's Snake defeating the Cobras and 'consuming' their essences to make him a more complete soldier, it's the political military machine consuming Snake and The Boss for their own ends, it's the guilt and bitterness that eats Snake, and yes, it's the cyclical defeat of mentors by students, which later happens to Snake himself with his clone son, Snake. Just so fucking thorough and deep and clever, like everything else in this beautiful game.

6:48 a interesting thing is that even tho the shagohod is a different project not related to the actual metal gear schematics from Granin, the "need" for a mobile and independent nuclear platform in that world created 4 lines of "nuclear tanks", 3 (granin's original Metal gear REX, Sokolov's Shagohod and Madnar's Metal Gear) were completely unrelated and approached the task in different ways, and the last one are the experimentations with Granin's design( Pupa, Chrysalis, cocoon, Peace Walker, Zeke, Sahelanthropus, Walker gears and Battle Gear) made by Huey.

Max, as I was doing an rhetorical annotation of Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience,” I couldn’t help but notice a striking similarity in the narrative and claims of the essay to that of MGS3’s theme of “Scene.” The historical context is of course set during a different period than the events portrayed in MGS3, but it seems that the conflicting aspects of the Scene are touched on in both pieces. There is heavy allusion and reference to the morality (or lack of) in the personas of both soldiers in war, as well as political figures and government officials who make decisions regarding the war. If you haven’t already, this may be worth looking into further as I feel like something could be there. Not to mention this piece was an inspiration to major civil rights figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.. Kojima could have also taken interest in this as well. Just something to consider :)

Amazing video! MGS3's main theme being SCENE was hard for me to understand until a few minutes into your video and all of a sudden you had it pieced together for me. One small thing, EVA never had the real Philosopher's Legacy as Ocelot had gotten the real one and at some point The Boss was holding onto a fake (I saw in another comment you'd talk about this in MGS4). Another cool thing/theory I like to hear about is how the Cobra Unit itself was a reference to the various emotions Naked Snake has to overcome through the game: Pain, Fear, End (facing death/oblivion), Fury, Sorrow, and Joy. I think this ties into SCENE very well as a lot of the Cobra Unit comes into expecting to die (well this is true for The End I am not as sure for the others) and The Boss knew none of them would stop Naked Snake from reaching her. Those boss fights were just as much a staged drama. And The Sorrow was a SCENE unto himself with the various hallucinations and whatnot he had made Snake endure. Lastly, AMAZING ending to the video and the game. One thing I love to do because it hits so much is have this ending speech from EVA in MGS3 and jump right into a video that has the first Peace Walker ending with Big Boss' speech where he argues The Boss has betrayed him. It literally goes from "She gave her life and her honor for her native land..." to "in giving up her life she abandoned everything she was as a soldier..." to radically different views/interpretations of The Boss' sacrifice.

Using the sneaking suit while fighting The Boss is amazing. Her's is pure shiny white, and the one Snake gets is pure shiny black but with red/orange bands around the arms and legs. But to see the 2 characters, in their iwn sneaking suit with opposes the other, black vs white, master vs student, you'd think "good vs evil" would fit but that couldn't be farther from true. Omg if you haven't, go find that suit where you hid Raikov, and fight The Boss with it. It is pure cinema. Plus it has a decently high camo index, lowers stamina consumption by a ton, and halves all damage.

I havnt heard or seen anything about Portable Ops, but for Revengeance, maybe "Nature" or "Meme" again even though MGS 2 did a better job of using that theme. I'm sure Max would have a much easier time at creating themes for both of those games lol

Snake doesn't say that the engravings REDUCE Ocelot's tactical advantage, he says engravings don't GIVE him any tactical advantage whatsoever.

The entire third act of this game (returning to Grozny Grad and onward) is just an absolute symphony. One of the most satisfying pieces of storytelling I've seen in any medium.

THIS...is truly the way to fall. After no once kept up from hell hole that they digged both Snake, Eva Ocelot and the rest of most gurtful is Snake himself. Man, this hurts so bad.

Metal gear solid 3 reminds me of classic samurai films, but in the context of western spy / war films. Especially fighting your mentor in a field of flowers. Iconic Japanese imagery Also i always admired how the boss fights you on equal footing, using nothing but cqc and her weapon of choice. A true warrior of honor The assassination of her character plays so perfectly with the themes of mgs2, especially the control of information via context. Its one thing to make social commentary like kojima brilliantly does in mgs2, its another to craft a smooth narrative that plays into the themes of the previous game, and really makes you feel emotionally invested in the truth... only to see it warped to suit the narrative thats deemed to be truth by those without morals The anger and injustice you and snake feel is unreal, they did her so dirty and no one will ever know the truth. Perfectly cements what was discussed in mgs2 as valid. Kojima is a mad man

Imo mgs 3 is THE paragon of the story telling art. Makes me itch that mgsv is so incomplete.
@hurmzz
@hurmzz 3 жыл бұрын
Kojima said mgsv was complete and he was happy with the result. The story is complete, just not finished like we want. Something is missing. It leaves a Phantom Pain. The incompletness of the game is part of its hidden meaning.

@@hurmzz yea but what about Eli, Mantis, and Sahelanthropus? It is factually incomplete. The final true act that should’ve been in the complete game

I don't know what is a theme of Portable Ops, but theme of Peace Walker is Peace, of MGS V - Revenge, of MGS 4 - either Change or Struggle.

I don’t know if anyone has ever asked this question but, how do you think The Boss would react to Jack and the monster he would become during Phantom Pain with using Venom Snake just as the CIA used her, and risking the safety of the world to achieve his dream and try to change the world the way he saw fit instead of sacrificing himself to keep the world as it was. I can’t help but think that she would be disappointed during that period of time from PP to MG2, but I’m curious to know your thoughts if you want to reply, and thank you for all of your hard work creating great videos on this great series.

The scale of the lies in the world is horrifying. I remember in one of your MGS2 streams being asked was SCENE meant for MGS3. All that came for me were the gameplay applications of that theme. Hope whoever asked me now knows the story implications
