From Sept. 24, 1978, here are some scenes from the pilot of "Mary," a variety show starring Mary Tyler Moore, fresh from her 1970s sitcom. This show lasted only a few weeks, which makes this even more rare!! Mary had a small ensemable with her on this show, including two stars who made it big on their own, as you'll see! (I'm taking a HUGE chance uploading this, because two entities that are featured in this video have struck me with Copyright Violations in the past and have pulled down some of my videos....but we'll see what happens!)

I was sooooo eager to see this show when it was announced! I wasn't able to watch the premiere or even the first few shows because I was in college and too busy to watch. But, one day, a fellow student said "Have you seen her new show? It's so bad." And I was like "How could anything Mary Tyler Moore appear in be 'so bad'?" THEN I finally saw the show (probably the last one before it was canceled) - UGH! It was/is beyond "so bad" - it's truly terrible. What were they thinking????

@rcruz4510 I saw this show when it premiered in 1978, and I thought it was awful and boring. I didn't bother watching it again - it was canceled after only 3 weeks! In fact, CBS canceled this mess after the 2nd week but had nothing to replace it with so they aired one more episode. Now seeing this in 2023, it's WORSE than I thought! Even in 1978, it is RARE for any show to be canceled after only 2 episodes! This is very awkward to watch. Her follow up variety show in 1979 was just as BAD.

Maybe that Mary Tyler Moore's Talk show didn't outlast through the 1980s decade, but David Letterman has sure made a real name, for himself, on the Tonight Show, during those years. Thanks! to Mary Tyler Moore, for she has made Michael Keaton and David Letterman, two excellent giant celebrities, in the world of Showbuissness. I know that she was even a very dear friend to Ed Asner and she was the most generous human being of all. God bless her soul! Thank! you for this wonderful KZfaq download presentation. I remember some other moments from this episode - during her opening monolgue,she admired the huge 'MARY' logo in the background and said "don't be too impressed, CBS told me it was left over from an old Mary Martin special." - then she took a Poloroid of her first studio audience and tried to get the people to all hunch together.

I have been waiting for someone to post this! Thank you so much - this is such a rarity. And yes the intro goes on WAY too long!! I was the president of Mary's fan club for 20 years and just started a Facebook page for back issues.(MARY Tyler Moore magazine) - my name is David Davis, but not the same guy who wrote and produced the MTM Show.

I've read this show was "rushed" into production, CBS wanting Mary Tyler Moore to do a show for them almost immediately after Mary decided to stop doing her TV series, and her desire to do a variety format. Keaton and Letterman were both talented people in a format too big for them. Keaton looks like he's having a blast, but Letterman is clearly thinking "come on everyone, you and I both know I don't sing and dance, and I have no idea what I am doing here." There was a second attempt at a variety format, with Mary playing a host of a variety show, with some scenes taking place backstage, giving a behind the scenes feel. It also didn't work, but it had its moments. It should be noted that the Dad from Teen Wolf, James Hampton, and comic actor Dick Shawn, who invented the high five when he played Hitler in the original Producers movie, were also featured, but not particularly memorable.

I know she has alot of fans who will say anything she was in was great but I'm not one of those. The Mary Tyler Moore show was iconic ,but this " stunk to high heaven. Not funny at all. The jokes were cringe and I felt 2nd hand embarrassment when she pulled a Carol Burnett and took questions from the audience. Grant Tinker and a producer from Carol's show tried to warn her that variety was over but I guess it was always her dream to host one
@matthewkaiser76
@matthewkaiser76 2 ай бұрын
@@user-sp6jk3zz5b The writers thought they could get away with writing the questions for Mary to answer, and have scripted responses. Carol didn't do that. Somehow she had just the right funny response to just about every question. Part of her genius might've been listening to Garry Moore take questions on his own show, which were not shown on TV but he answered questions with funny responses during commercials. Also, I am fairly sure that Carol was asked the same questions on some shows, and I would also dare say that some questions may not have gotten the laugh she wanted, and she would try to come up with a better response if the same question was asked on another show. I'd like to know how many times she was actually asked to do the Tarzan yell, and how often they would air her doing one. I'm sure she obliged each time, but you can't have her doing the Tarzan yell each show!

Amazing how you could put so many funny people together and come out with such an unfunny show. Mary was trying to do Carol Burnett here, they didn't have a clue. And the canned laughter -there was no canned laughter on the Mary Tyler Moore show. Didn't need any. You could have put a microphone in the street and recorded Americans laughing in front of their TV sets every Saturday night. Letterman's bit, by the way, is funny.

I assume the 2 stars referred to are Keaton and Letterman. So Dick Shawn and Swoosie Kurtz aren't stars? Okay, maybe James Hampton wasn't a big star, but nearly everyone in this cast either was or became a well-known performer. And the remaining one is Merrill Markoe, who only reinvented late night TV.

Variety shows like the Brady Bunch and Redd Foxx just went sour in 1978. I think the viewers had enough of it but the writers and producers didn't adjust to the hard rock, punk rock and disco scene. Likewise, they were alcoholics and the drug scene took over. I think had it been Cheech & Chong, I think it would have made it if Lou Adler was the producer.

Shows like Sonny and Cher and Carol Burnett had top notch writers and choreographers. Mary had Merill Markoe, who is a fine writer, but not for a format like this. The producers and writers for Carol, Sonny and Cher knew exactly what they were capable of doing and wrote to best suit their talents. The writers of Mary didn't do that... Letterman doesn't sing or dance, yet he was subjected to both. James Hampton and Michael Keaton are both fine actors, but they don't really have the right chemistry to pull off a variety format. Dick Shawn... funny guy, but his talents were never really given the attention they deserved.

This TV show had it! Michael Keaton and David Letterman, who would become very famous, Dick Shawn, who was already a famous comedian and the famous Mary Tyler Moore, who already was well established on TV and who would later establish herself in a few successful movies. However, the timing of this show couldn't had been any worse. For starters, by 1978, the variety show format was on its way out. MARY was similar to THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW which was in its 11th season and THE SMOTHERS BROTHER HOUR which was cancelled in March 1969, only because the network was scared of that duo, whose show was still very popular when it got the axe. But Carol Burnett and the Smothers Brothers established themselves when the variety show was still a popular format. When the Smothers Brothers got their show back in 1975, they were facing changing tastes in entertainment. And being rebels with no more causes, their "cutting edge" had more or less, dulled. Had MARY premiered in the late '60s, Mary Tyler Moore probably would've provided some competition with Carol Burnett.

@whewfan
@whewfan 5 жыл бұрын
The show was rushed into production. MTM wanted a variety format, always loved singing and dancing. CBS wanted to get her as soon as possible. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was quite controversial for its time, and because of "lack of suitable content", CBS gave them the axe. Oddly enough, when they returned in '75, CBS asked them to be edgy and controversial, but the Smothers Brothers replied "thanks but no thanks"... they DID controversial, now they just wanted a fun show with no headaches. Of the cast, Letterman was by far the least ready for a show like this. He looks very uncomfortable and gives these knowing looks into the camera to suggest "you know I am out of my league, and I know I am out of my league... just try to enjoy the show." In case Mary's monologue sounds a bit "Letterman-esque", that's because Letterman's long time girlfriend Marilyn Markoe was one of the show's writers. In essence, Markoe helped develop Letterman's on screen persona. In the book Letterman, Markoe was also involved in creating some of the shenanigans seen on Letterman's daytime show. Once, Letterman was locked out of the studio, and hidden cameras captured him trying to get in through other doors. He was quite upset with Markoe later for doing this to him for the show.

To be fair to MTM, I think she was given bad advice and was rushed into this and other series without regard for the following: 1. Variety as a genre, was dead. Carol Burnett knew when to quit, but Mary just made a fool of herself here. 2. Wrong choice of supporting cast. David Letterman was dreadful here as was Michael Keaton These two men don't sing and dance! 3. Mary said in her autobiography that she was trained to dance. You could've fooled me and her singing was awful.

I think it was bad writing & being born after variety shows I just never was exposed to them. The star wars holiday special was horrific & it was a variety show. They put the most popular movie in history & biggest money maker ever at that time & it was awful. I love 70s pop culture & the only variety show that was pretty good was the sonny & cher show when they were married. Maybe I just loved chers bob Mackie outfits. So it's like a cross between sketch comedy & singing & dancing. Micheal & dave i think were fine just not used correctly. Theirs a lot of talent on the show but w/o good writing it will fail. I saw a dance number with the cast with dave Micheal swoozie mary & the rest of the cast & it reminded me of our grammar school productions with the choreography . Great time capsule to see up & coming big stars but if not for that it's pretty bad. Mary is not a comedian. She is comedic actress but it's different. I'm surprised she got another shot the next year which failed. I guess she really liked Keaton but he was so young & out if place with the older cast. I think he was just an usher. I think dave in that one was a contributor but not part of the cast. I guess his dream was to do a talk show of his own. He did not try to go into acting or be on snl. Looks like just a leg up in the industry which is very hard to get when u think of all the pilots that never air. America loved its variety shows in the 70s I guess. It just seems like too much thrown it. A show kinda has to be one thing. Mary looks to be trying very hard though & she isnt a bad dancer & her singing is not horrible.
