Take a look at a special train through Pengra Pass in the Oregon Cascades. The UP1943 Veterans unit lead the train from Eugene Oregon to Roseville California this day. It left Eugene early morning which gave great morning light through the mountains.
Locations in the video are between Dougren in Pleasant Hill and Cruzatte.
This is the first time UP1943 lead an officer special train along this line so it was well overdue and had waited over a year now for it to make that specific trip. It has only been through here once before when it was touring around with the UP4141 George Bush unit.
All footage taken from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro.
Music by Marcus Warner and all rights are reserved to Marcus Warner. I do not claim to own any rights and give Marcus Warner full credit as such.

I'm a steam guy (born in Toledo, Ohio in 1940) who observed and photographed steam locomotives when they were in regular service, so I am only very mildly interested in the contemporary railroad scene, with its soul-less diesels and its sterile freight and passenger cars. But I have been enchanted by your work, even when the motive power growls! Please carry on with your outstanding work!

I've heard that watching a tank full of tropical fish can help lower high blood pressure. This is much better! Excellent piloting of the drone. Excellent scenery and choice of music. Just super work. Thank you!

After watching this one and a few others you have done I had to subscribe. I have never seen such fantastic drone work with superb editing and music. The one on the Feather River Canyon was mesmerizing. You sir are a master and I only can hope to some day be this good with my drone. Please keep doing this kind of fantastic work because this is what drones were meant for.

At the 5:25 mark there’s a trail that leads around the side of the tunnel to the right....if you follow that trail, it’ll lead you to an access porthole that goes into the heart of the tunnel itself. It’s super eerie, but way cool! Btw, do NOT go around on that trail alone....there’s a lot of risks around the backside of that tunnel, including wildlife! (Don’t ask me how I found that out....it’s a long story lol)
@TheRailfanDan

I do know about that trail. Haven't hiked it yet but have wanted to. My buddy has used that to get between tunnel 7 and 8 for photos.

Spectacular video in my home state of Oregon!!! Just wondering which drone you were using on the video, as much of it appears to be flying backwards while the camera was facing forward, or it was shot from the Phantom or Inspire, which both allow you to film 360 degrees, I believe.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 3 жыл бұрын
This was with the Phantom 4 Pro which is the same as the Mavic drones. Only one camera facing front. The Inspire drones are the only one's out of those that can rotate the camera independently of the drone.
@thomashorstmann3020
@thomashorstmann3020 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRailfanDan Wow... spectacular flying skills. The idea of flying it without forward facing cameras would scare me to death. I guess the trick is flying above all known obstacles, while also relying on sensors to keep you out of trouble. Luckily, my newest addition is the 2s, which has much improved sensor capability in all directions except down. Hopefully the next generation of Phantoms will include the capability to shoot 360 degrees. Assuming they stick with the Phantom line. Which I hear is a fifty fifty preposition at the moment.
@thomashorstmann3020
@thomashorstmann3020 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRailfanDan Funny... with the camera mounted below the Phantom, it really should be able to shoot 360 degrees. Hoping the Phantom 2 will have a real gimble, with 360 degree capability with active track. Time will tell. I'm guessing next release will be the Mavic 3. But who knows with DJI. Time will tell.

Dan, Awsome videos! That active track is great. Just wondering how at 45 mph it gets around the mountain tunnel and is waiting on the other side. While the train is most likely going that same speed or more. You know the engineer? I don't fly, but if I did, I'd wish I'd have your opportunities. Thank you, Very much for all you do.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 5 жыл бұрын
Those were actually two different locations I flew from. I shot one and then drove to the other and flew a different time. They stopped for about 20 minutes at a tunnel so I had time to get ahead again.

Hi Dan, I was wondering how do you keep up with the trians on these awesome videos. I've chased trains around and they don't wait for you to catch up with them. Would you share your plan with a fellow railfan? George
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 5 жыл бұрын
Do you mean physically getting ahead of the train again so you can fly at multiple locations or actually keeping pace with the train while flying?
@georgebono8655
@georgebono8655 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRailfanDan Changing locations to do multiple shots. Some guys have more than one camera and they leap frog locations to stay up with the train. It doesn't look like you might do that for your videos.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 5 жыл бұрын
@@georgebono8655 Oh just knowing the territory ahead of time to know what locations I can get ahead of the train or not. It's easy here on Pengra Pass. On the mountain grade alone you can see one train in 3 or more locations pretty easily because of the lay of the land and the slower speed they go.
