You can see this as representation of negative thoughts. Often, we tell ourselves horrific things that other people never even think about us. Stuff like body dysmorphia and conditions similar to can arise from thought patterns like that. We can become resentful at the environment as a consequence, taking things personally, working less, feeling unattractive, but ultimately it comes from a place of insecurity and that anger is turned inwards.
