Agree. At this point the fan & media speculation over QBs is insane but media missed on Mahomes. The 70s Steelers, 80s 49ers, 90s Cowboys & the Patriots built their dynasties ignoring media arrogant media demands (although it might have contributed to Steelers Noll missing on Marino).

Well in fairness, Perry was not worth the first in terms of his ability as a defensive lineman. He was serviceable, maybe good at times, but was never truly worth that draft position

Buster Rhymes had ONE season of "solid " kick returning, in 1985 he led the league in number of kicks returned and kick return yards but he did not lead the league in average yards per kick return, he played in 5 games in 1986 and he had 9 kick returns. He played in 20 games during his 2 year NFL career and he caught a total of 8 passes for 149 yards and 0 TD's. He was as solid as the contents of a balloon.

@@philthornton1382 Rozelle killed the proposed 3-way trade between the Colts, Raiders, and Bears, which would've brought Elway to the Raiders, absolutely. He was pissed at the lawsuit Al Davis was putting on the NFL, and you have to remember, the Raiders had gotten Marcus Allen in 1982. Imagine, Elway and Marcus in the same backfield? Rozelle didn't want to put on a fake smile and give Al 3 more Lombardi Trophies.

Accorsi wanted to trade Elway to Dallas. The Cowboys were going to give the Colts Danny White, 2 other starters, and 2 first-round draft picks for Elway, but Colts owner Robert Irsay arrogantly nixed that trade and made his own deal with Denver.

Fun fact in 1979 in the 3rd round the Cowboys did not take the top player on their board which they always did...they took a need TE Doug Cosbie and passed on QB Joe Montana. In this draft they moved up and had only one player in mind. They wanted WR Jerry Rice and the 49ers traded one pick in front of Dallas and took rice.

If you watch the 30 for 30 documentary elways to marino you the owner told him not to draft elways but he did anyways

in Gerald Eskenazi’s book “Gang Green” the Jets apparently were going to pick either Jerry Rice or Al Toon. The Jets felt that Jerry Rice was better suited for Grass (for whatever reason it isn’t specified) so they selected Al Toon instead. So if the Jets stayed at Shea stadium, they would have selected Jerry Rice instead of Al Toon.

Not much on Bruce Smith ,so I'll add one .Bruce had never heard of Buffalo,he thought he was going to NYC . Next the weather hit him and he was sick to his stomach about it .The Bills took him out to eat and he ate 50 chicken wings .this was considered good in the day ,as Bruce balloned up to over 320 .he played at 265-270 once he figured out nutrition and health. The Bills were notoriously cheap ,worse than the Vikings ,Ralph never signed another #1 in the draft Ohio St. Tom Cousineau whom went to the CFL b4 Bills traded him to his hometown Browns.

At the time, it really wasn't. the NFL mindset of what a "proper" QB was, and Flutie didn't fit that mindset. If Flutie had come along the same time as Vick or even Steve Young, teams would've been more eager to draft him.

My brother played at Grambling. He was a G man. Eddie Robinson and Doug Williams was his coach. He was told he would go in the 6th round because he played at an HBCU. He went undrafted and was an undrafted Free Agent. Doug wouldn't vouch for him.

Historically, HBCU don’t play the same level of competition as other D1 schools. It still happens today with players who play for D1AA schools like Delaware, Villanova, North Dakota St, etc.

What’s amazing is the NFL still hasn’t learned that you can’t cut your staff and players as soon as they make a mistake. If you do that, other teams will pick them up. And after they’ve shaken off the nerves those players and staff you had no faith end with absolutely dominant. This scenario happens over and over and over again.

The portion on Jerry Rice @ 15:55 is kinda BS. This acts like he was a deep sleeper that only Bill Walsh was keyed in on. Rice was a CONSENSUS first round projection. It is agreed that he fell A LITTLE because of his 4.7 forty time. But he was undoubtedly a first round / top 3 WR.

There was more to the Jerry Rice thing. Dallas wanted Rice badly. They knew that Rice ran a SLIGHTLY slower 40 but also knew that he ran the same time IN PADS. Further, Dallas felt as if no one else knew about Rice. I doubt the 49ers drafted Rice because Bill Walsh saw him on TV. In the Dallas circles, it was thought that a scout inadvertently leaked information on Rice to the 49ers. Thus, Dallas ended up with another bust #1 pick.
