Well when you're forced into marriage it makes it easy to turn down your partner.

He married Lianfang because of his mother. His late wife set Lianfang up in order to prevent her from becoming the legal wife after her death. She gave Lianfang a choice to leave the capital or become a concubine. Lingyi suggested that she leaves and after a period of time she would be able to return and marry someone else. She refused and decided to become his concubine. Afterwards Lingyi told his mother that he didn't want to marry her because he didn't want to ruin her life. He knew that he would never love her. He also knew he didn't have much to offer her. His mother disagreed and talk him into marrying her. His marriage to Lianfang happened before his marriage to Shiyi.

@@savannahshane2231 definitely.. he's late wife had all her ducks lined up in a row. She killed two birds with one stone. She knew the great Madam was going to have him marrying Lianfang after she died and the mourning period was over. She knew that he would be powerless against his mother so she took control over the situation/eliminated Lianfang as the legal wife thereby taking away the great Madam's power. She eliminated Lianfang's bid to become his wife. She regulated a legitimate daughter to the status of a concubine. Lianfang was given a choice but her obsession with Lingyi prevented her from seeing reality.

@@savannahshane2231 that was probably the best decision she ever made. Remember Erniang was vying for that position. She even went so far as to set a trap for Shiyi so that she would end up with that abusive SOB but Shiyi turned the tables on her after she indirectly got her mother killed. Shiyi was exactly what Lingyi needed after being surrounded by so many wolves in sheep's clothing. Her plan was brilliant. She eliminated the threat to her son/cut her mother in law off at the knees. It's the very reason why she kept giving Shiyi such a hard time. I applaud her courage to solidify her son's future by ensuring that her sister ended up as the legal wife.
