Thanks for the great review. Especially the detailed comparisons give a nice insight into how the different amps compare as the market around this price point always gets busier. I just recently switched from a 789 to an A90 for my Hifiman Arya and I couldn't be happier. Looking forward to your review of the Topping as well. Keep up the great content.

Haha, I love that only on a video like this would it be noted that the surface of the casing might be affecting your voice reflections coming into the mic. I remember when I got more into this hobby and started paying attention more, I realized that things like my laptop screen or holding a sheet of paper to read would affect the sound of my voice coming back at me. Science!! It blew me away.

Excellent review. What a shame regarding its single ended performance. SMSL-SP200 seems to be a better option for those who want balanced but still have a good single-ended output at around U$70 more. Anyway, I'm quite impressed with the number of your reviews in the last 2 months while maintaining the quality. Good job!

Have you see Blue Jeans Cable? I recently found them and really appreciate their no nonsense approach to inter-connect cables. As in they focus on proper shielding and proper resistance for the spec of the cable. Actual specs rather than marketing, not sure if you'd review something like that but now that I've found them they're my inter-connect provider for everything!

@@PassionforSound One thing I forgot to mention is not only are they about good shielding and proper resistance for the type of connection used but also they specify the capacitance. On some cables they even have a lower capacitance one that should sound better in most cases, but have a higher shielding one if you have issues with RFI.

Wow great review! I feel like I’ve seen every Magnius video on KZfaq but I learnt so much here. I use a range of unbalanced headphones and just picked up a pair of JBL 306p’s half price so was about to buy this to complete the desktop setup and provide the JBLs a balanced feed. I think now I’ll just get the Heresy and some RCA to TS cables to feed the JBLs. Or is there another AMP with pre-out balanced I should be considering. Don’t love the inability to detect headphones usage either. So very glad I found this video. First one of yours I’ve seen... time to subscribe :)

Very interesting review. Here's my perspective; I've gone through a lot of headphone amps over the last few years; the most recent being the FOTM TXH designs which sounded powerful but thin and lacking instrumental timbre/tonal colours. I've still got a Naim Headline 2 which is somewhat clinical and isn't that particularly brilliant at PRAT despite what the Naim zealots would have you believe. The two amps I've settled on are the Rupert Neve RNHP feeding Beyer Dynamic DT1990s via balanced from a Benchmark DAC3L and a CI Audio VHP2 (which I've had for the last eight years) fed from a refurbed Arcam rDAC and feeding a variety of high impedance headphones, but mainly the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250Ω. The VHP2 is a very interesting amp as it uses the same Texas chip that Schiit chose for the Magnius; the VHP2 has excellent timing and beautiful timbre/tonal colours. I'm not going to get into the idiocy of balanced outputs for headphones (the idea of balanced is to cancel out common mode noise, before voltage amplification; see Benchmark's take on this). The single ended noise figures for this amp are -94dB; if anybody has a recording with s/n ratio of even -80dB I'd be interested. For anybody interested, this amp's single ended output is exceptionally good, fantastic PRAT and excellent rendition of instrumental timbre/tonal colours (piano especially sounds fabulous, especially the lower registers which sound incredibly accurate). I'd say this is one of Schiit's best amps ever, I've owned a few of their earlier offerings (DACS and amps) and wasn't impressed (hum, mismatched volume levels, hardness in the sound, etc); I bought the amp as a curiosity as it had the same chip as the VHP2, I didn't think Schiit would get the implementation right (and anticipated Ebaying it after audition) but they did get it right and it's a keeper for me.

Do you think there's any difference between using the balanced headphone jack and single ended jacks on the THX 789? I only briefly tested the balanced jack with my Focal Elex and didn't think there was a big difference, so continued using single ended for all my headphones. The single ended is more convenient and I don't want to buy more cables if I don't have to. My 789 is connected to a Grace SDAC Balanced via XLR.

I've not noticed any significant difference. The fact that it's not a fully balanced design is probably a benefit in that regard.

@@PassionforSound On your Modius review you suggested a few DAC pairings. What would you suggest for this amp, if not the Modius? I've been thinking about the SMSL SU-9. Though pricier, has a few more features. I've also been seeing alot of people recommend not to spend more on AMP/DAC setup than what was invested on headphones.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
I think in a lot of cases the headphones will cap the maximum performance so this is an ok rule, but it doesn't take into account the fact that you might upgrade your headphones down the track. I think we should (sensibly) spend as much as we can on each part of the chain in whatever order we buy things. It's rare that people don't upgrade/change gear over time so it's rarely a bad investment. As for recommended DACs, the Modius is a great choice, but otherwise most balanced DACs on the market should do fine. I haven't tried a lot of other balanced DACs in the price range of the Modius so I can't really comment on the SU-9, etc. but definitely stick with balanced DACs to get the most from your Magnius. Sorry I can't give you more specifics!

Good I watched this before purchasing the Magnius. It's clear to me that Schiit should have just removed the single ended and concentrated all the power to the balanced side since Schiit offers the Heresy. I did plan on buying this along with the Modius as a stack to set and forget my setup for a while, but since the single ended is pretty much useless then maybe I will stick with the 789 and find a better dac to pair it with. I did consolidate my headphone collection and settled with only three and them being the Sennheiser HD 650, Hifiman Sundara and Beyerdynamic DT 1990. Reason why I wanted this was to run the 650 and the Sundara balanced and the 1990 on single ended, but now I have doubts.

Hi Karl, the SE output isn't dreadful, it's just noticeably poorer than the balanced output. If you want an amazing amp, the Jotunheim 2 is brilliant. Otherwise, the Asgard 3 is a great option that I prefer to the 789 and it has plenty of power for all your headphones with no need for balanced

Great review! Can I ask you something? When reviewing the A90 could you address the differences in timbre with the thx? I'm currently with a smsl sp200 and a topping l30 here, which is claimed to be very close to the a90 single ended performance. But as far as timbre goes, in my subjective perception the sp200 have longer and more natural decay, which much benefits pianos, guitars and so on. So I wanted to know if this somehow shorter decay is present in the a90 balanced performance. Thank you in advance!

@@PassionforSound I appreciate the response. I checked out your review of the r2r and the measurements I'm sure have turned away quite a few people who would otherwise enjoy it. For me, I'm leaning towards something more precise amd clean since I still do a lot of home studio mixing. So whatever I get, it has to be as clean as possible. Well as clean as I can afford would be a better way of putting it. Otherwise I'd have a Hugo TT2 and M-Scaler 😎

I know it doesn't stack will with the THX 789, but the D90 hits the mark based on your requirements. My only complaint with it is a slightly 2D soundstage that lacks some depth. You could also consider the Topping E30 with a separate power supply (i.e. not USB power). In fact the E30/L30 (amp) combo would perform the 789 and R2R.

Thanks for an insightfull twenty minutes. The question now arises if a schiit modius is good enough to be that balanced dac, if you want a balanced system. I'm thinking of building a purifi eval amplifier for my speakers which needs balanced in. Many class d amps do. The magnius pops up as a real possibility for a balanced pre amp. But I now understand the entire chain then has to be converted to balanced. Goodbye to the poly/mojo in my case. That has the organic touch and I Love that. Any chance on a review of the modius/magnius combo?

Hi Ruud, I'll see what I can arrange. I would expect the Modius to be a good option at the budget end of things. Not sure what else is recommend in that line. One thought though is that you could probably have an adapter made up to feed the SE out from the Mojo into the balanced input of the Magnius. You could even use the two HP outs if you really wanted - 1 wired for left + ground and the other for right + ground

Personally I see the main advantage to the Modius is for those looking for an inexpensive entry level dac allowing balanced amp inputs and a newer chipset than the standard Modi at a very affordable price point. The same as I look at the Modi multibit as an entry level stand alone dac for the multibit type of processing which also has the advantage over any of the add in mb cards of more input capabilities and can be used with any amp as it is own stand alone unit for only a small increase in cost over the internal mb cards. Again at a very good entry level price point for true multibit processing. For use with the Asgard3 which only has single end inputs much of the extra money spent on the Modius will not be utilized as the focal point for that Dac and its higher price point is in those balanced outputs which you cannot use with the Asgard. You will get a newer chipset but is that difference worth paying double the price over the Standard Modi for? And for the most part when it comes to single end performance the Modi 3+ at half the cost will do the exact same thing as the Modius. So my opinion on the Modius is if you do not mind spending the extra money over the standard Modi to have the balance outputs capability for possible future use then buy the Modius. If you do not care about balanced outputs or figure if you go that direction you probably would prefer to just buy a higher end dac (such as the BIFROST) for those capabilities then save the money and just get the standard Modi. Then you come to the modi multibit and again the water is not totally clear. The modi multibit uses a different process to convert the digital signal and some people like the results and say it sounds more alive or smoother with less edge than say the more standard processing method of the non multibit modi or modius. Others though do not like the sound saying it is not as defined or clear. Welcome to nothing is clear or agreed upon across different users. I find with the types of music I listen to, with the hybrid tube amps I use for music and my choice of headphones and my old ears all combined at the same time I like the multibit processing the best for me for music. In my main listening system I have a Gungnir Multibit dac which for me is an end game piece of equipment.. I also just ordered a Modi Multibit dac to pair with a Valhalla 2 tube amp I already have for a bedroom system. But I will say that also I have an Asgard3 that was bought to use as a amp for my computer gaming system and not focused on music and with that I combined a regular Modi and a Loki EQ for a very well performing system for its main intention. Again totally different application and with which I have different expectations so the reason of using different gear. As you enter this rabbit hole of a hobby one thing you will continue to learn is there is no plain and clear answers or consensus on pretty much anything on what is best. We all like different things, we hear things differently, we have different expectations or what we think is nirvana and we have different budgets or willingness in either how much we can or will agree to spend seeking that sweet spot where you find satisfaction. What I think sounds great you may think sounds terrible or do not like. Makes neither of us wrong just different in what we seek or find pleasing. Hence why using anothers opinion on what sounds the best is a crapshoot for how you will think it sounds. Again I realize I answered nothing really just pointed out some of how I look at what choices you are trying to decide on. Good luck on your journey deeper into the rabbit hole. For many that journey really never ends.

I am considering between Magnius and a used Jotunheim (amp only version).. which one sounds better for the same money ? Appreciate your advice.

Hi Sam, I'd choose the Magnius. Both have their drawbacks, but I think the Magnius is easier to listen to than the slightly forced / uptight sound of the Jotunheim.

Hi Exeonz, yes you can get a 2.5mm to XLR adapter. They're readily available and work fine.

Thanks. I once was not so happy when you said Sp200 was slightly better than 789, to me it was clearly better. That's why now i'll take your 'slightly' better to more than slightly. I would not accept Magnius to have almost the same soundstage as heresy or atom and such. I Wonder if you'll suggest to me Fiio k5 Pro while i'll save again for 789 or A90 again, and a great dac. From now on i'll take your 'very slight' as 'slight' eheh ;) Keep it on!

Haha. Thanks Viper! I try to find a balance between creating the right level of expectations about products and also not panning a product that someone might love or over-hyping anything that might lead to damaging my long-term credibility. I would say that the A90 is the one to save for out of those options. It's a really excellent amp for the price - very clean, very refined and great features and functions. I bought it for review only, but it's likely going to stay in my system and it is comfortably better than the 789.

@@PassionforSound That's great, you are really one of the best reviewer out here. :) I wonder as other reviewers can't seems to find any sonical difference between THX's 789 and 887, maybe because people expext they sound exactly the same.. Anyway. Also, will be nice to hear about your A90 review :) I have a question, if you could know. Planar headphones we know they need wobbs of power to deliver their best sound quality, some audiophile pairs them with very powerful speaker amps. Take we for example LCD-XC, very sensitive for a planar of that level, around 102dB/1mW and 20 ohm, THX Rigs deliver around 6W, and some like A90 7W at 20ohm for XC, in balanced output. But what about VRMS? With Balanced DACS usually they deliver at least double Voltage (VRMS) or more, do you think is also plays a good role in 'power headroom', like watts do, if we can call it like that, on headphones, especially planars like LCD-XC even if it's kinda sensitive? I'm just wandering, as i never heard mentioned it. Thanks ;)
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Viper! The power myth is a bit of a problem in this hobby. If you do the maths, very, very few headphones need more than 1 watt. Most need less than half of that. The sensitivity of something like the LCD-XC means you absolutely do not need crazy amounts of power (I don't have a calculator handy, but there are multiple online tools you can use to see exactly how much power a headphone needs). As for A90, it's great! I recorded the review today and will edit it this week. I might reschedule things so it drops next weekend. Oh, and voltage output from the DAC contributes to overall volume, but I'm not sure of the exact interaction it has with the deliverable power from the amp. That's a bit beyond my technical expertise - sorry!
@vipernecklampy8773

@@PassionforSound Thanks for the reply. I see, voltage may contribute, so maybe better to have balanced than not eheh. Headphones don't need more than 1W to sound best? Mhh, my M1060c when it was used on balanced on thx aaa 789 was sounding defenately wider and 3d, effortless and better. I don't think a cable can do so much, so it might have been the 6W headroom instead of less than 2W. I suggest to try yourself High Gain on balanced output if your dacs doesn't have higer than 4Vrms, as i heard it could clip. If it's like Thx aaa 789, Atom and Heresy, i think on High-Gain they sound better, much more power avaiable? After testing i don't i think am i be wrong or fooled.. I hear bigger soundstage, effortless sound, i guess you should try High Gain on A90 or 789 :)

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jet, there's no problems doing that. You're not technically getting a balanced connection, but that actually rarely matters in most situations. The key is that it's always safe to adapt single-ended to balanced, but you need to be careful of adapting from balanced to single-ended.
@nine-digits
@nine-digits 3 жыл бұрын
I have a question... Is the “single ended” output balanced as well? Beyerdynamic sells their DT1770 with a balanced Mini-XLR to TRS cable, and it’s my understanding that TRS is balanced. Is the single ended output not TRS?
@PassionforSound

Hi Elaxia, a single TRS cannot be balanced for stereo signals. You have to have two negatives and two positives for stereo balanced. Are you sure it's not a TRRS?

Enjoyed the review. Especially the information on single ended. Not sure i agree about he AC thing. Why do people spend so much money taking their hifi gear off the grid? Danny from G R research's demo gear is running off batteries. This eliminates any signal in the dirty AC current.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rothgar, the AC thing is not suggesting that mains power is cleaner than battery, etc. just that the amp needs a swinging voltage so they've chosen to supply AC and keep the voltage swing from the beginning rather than taking DC and having to create positive and negative voltage swings later.

That's a good question and I don't have the Magnius anymore to test. I would start in low gain and see how you go and then turn the volume right down, switch to high gain and see if it's different. Often the gain does influence preamp outputs so it might shift the volume range a bit

what does putting 5 watts to 32 ohms mean? Is there anywhere I can learn about how to read specs of amps or the technical data like impedance, sensitivity or anything related to headphone or headphone amps or dac technical data? I've an enjoyer of good audio equipment, especially headphones. But most of the time I go by feeling. I've been in this hobby for a few years now and I think going by feeling is not going to do it for me anymore. Lately it has been difficult for me to know the right amps or dacs for my headphones. I need knowledge to advance! Any help from anyone would be appreciated!
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to explain in brief here, but I'm working on a course at the moment to help provide exactly this type of info. In short, each headphone has an impedance rating so it's about understanding how much power the amp can produce at that impedance and how much power the headphone needs. In reality, there are very few headphones that need anywhere near 1W of power. Most need just a few mW (maybe 100mW max) of power for normal listening levels

Passion for Sound from all i can gathered, the Magnius is more neutral, slightly digital sounding as you mentioned, while the Zen Can is to the warmer side while having a bass switch which doesn't colour up other frequencies like other amps w/ bass boost on. since i'm using the Aeon Flow RT Closed which do need a bit of help esp. at the low end when i'm just chilling, the Zen Can seems to be a great addition as i'm planning to get the Mobius/Magnius combo. hope you could get your hands on the Zen Can soon! looking forward to your pov
