This video shows how we are continuing training for our 5 month old Schip puppy... and having fun with her. Her training actual began long before we picked her up at nine weeks.

What an awesome and instructional video! I never thought about hiding treats around the house for them. That's so fun! =)

Thank you for the comment. They really do enjoy using their nose, and the hunt is something that is part of their history so it is satisfying for more than the treat

Thank you very much. Positive reinforcement is the only way to go. Raven has since grown into a wonderful companion. I hope to get her qualified as a therapy dog one day.

Just got a little boy about 6 months ago. Being in my 60s I have owned a lot of different types of breeds. This one is without doubt the most loving to only his family and most intelligent and creative games inventor that I have ever owned. Caution: Not for 1st time dog owners. This breed needs experienced owners who have owned dogs in the past. He is like a race car and only an experienced driver should get in one.

Right you are. As you know they are also pretty high energy and need more exercise than many other smaller breeds. But the exercise is also good for me.

A good choice! Have fun! No need breeders cut off the tail!

once you have a schipperkee you will never want another dog.i got mine,shipper.funny but i never trained him.i would say hes not a slave,he can do what he wants.he was the sweetest,smartest obedient dog you could ever imagine.i died the day he died,just cant go on without him.

You were very blessed to have a schipperke that required no training. As a breed these dogs have a tendency to wander and my training is designed for their safety and ability to survive in a world of cars and people. I now have another Schipperke and before Raven I had another pair of Schipperkes for 16 years...so you are right about not wanting another breed. This is my last pair as I am an old man.

I have a Schipperke-Pomeranian and he's basically a house cat that barks. He cannot fetch or do anything dog-like haha. I'm going to try this activity with him

When I call my Schipperke, sometimes instead of coming she likes to pat at the ground. It took me years to realize she was mimicking what I do when I call her. I pat my leg. Little rat thinks she's clever.
@jlewis8055 жыл бұрын
That's a great insight. I find I have to think more visually and literally to understand Raven. They're always trying to communicate with us too.

@@jlewis805 They are really smart. I don't remember when she started it, but she will smile with her teeth. I remember someone saying to me "I think you dog is snarling at me". She was wagging her tail though. Her snarl looks different too. She shows her teeth because that's what we do.

What an awesome dog! Schipperke recently has become sort of my dream dog thanks to the huge pile of information and videos on the internet. I mean "dream", because I(my family), we've never had a dog- and this one isnt for a first time dog owners and most likely we wont be able to provide and suit to its demands and specifics, which is a must. Its quite rare in my country and the price is at least 1000eur too(which actually is the least concern). Such a great dog and we cant have it, what a pity. So, I envy you guys(in a good sense)), keep it up!!

Certain breeds just speak to you. I'm sure you will get one someday. What a puppy schipperke needs most is a strong leader because they can be independent and willful until trained. You might be open to an older trained schipperke if you can find one and they are a good fit

You'll be surprised at how quickly they can learn things. The treat finding game is a lot of fun since it uses their best tool... The nose. Good luck.

These are all the things I'd like to train my dog to do... So glad I found this! And just found out about the schipperke too.... I think I'll definitely get one now ! Great job with all the training, very impressive

This is an amazing video and I'm so glad you got her into nosework! My Schipperke loves this game and we've gone through a few competitions!! It's also gotten her in trouble at times... She's gotten her canine good citizen, even my service dog, but 10 years old and still getting into the trash LOL. Where'd you get her? Keep up the great training!!

first time i came across this dog breed, just saw a post in fb of this dog left by owners, it's so cute and cuddly like a black bear cub but so agile, just perfect for indoors too due to its size

Curious, what kennel did you get Raven from and would you recommend them? Thanks
@jlewis8052 жыл бұрын
I have purchased two Schipperkes from Deborah Kunic of KunicRanch.com. She does a phenomenal job with her pups. Her website is very comprehensive and informative. She is near Paso Robles CA. And clearly, yes I would recommend her. Thanks for asking.

how did you teach her that!!! share some tips please!
@jlewis8054 жыл бұрын
The main thing is to be consistent with your training. We use treats and praise whenever she get s it right. Give rewards immediately. Also keep it always positive and simple, never use the word NO when training. I pick up stuff from professional trainers online. Finally don't use a lot words when training, just the one you want them to learn. Raven is 2 years old now. I need to make anew video showing what she can do. Thanks for watching.

@@jlewis805 thats great, i love this breed, the Bell trick was just awesome, any insight on that one? Keep it up!
@jlewis8054 жыл бұрын
@@darndarndarn When she looks like she wants to go outside or when you just want to train, take her to the door. I say ,Do you want t go outside? and then ring the bell and open the door right away. Then sometimes I take her paw gently and ring the bell, saying the same words and opening the door right away after I help her ring the bell. If she then goes out side, give her a good girl and a treat. Another ways is to have a partner stay inside while you go out the door. When she gets excited and wants to follow you, your partner helps her ring the bell and then opens the door, so she starts associating the bell with the door opening. Keep up this training daily for a few minutes. Eventually they get it. Be alert for when she first does it on her own. You have to reinforce that with immediately opening the door. If I can't get to the door right away I say Wait. But you don't want to use that word till she clearly gets the bell ringing. Thanks for your interest. I really enjoy helping their minds make connections like this.
