Great video! One thing to add- schizophrenia is thought to be caused by an increase in dopamine in the brain, not decrease. That's why many antipsychotics work to block dopamine.

Increase in dopamine but not decrease.Schizophrenia is associated with an imbalance in dopamine levels in the brain. The prevailing theory suggests an overactivity of dopamine transmission in certain areas of the brain, particularly the mesolimbic pathway. This overactivity is thought to contribute to positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions. However, the relationship between dopamine levels and schizophrenia is complex, and other neurotransmitters and brain regions are also involved in this disorder.

dont think like that... see if you feel a little pain, the best thing is to ignore it. similarly you should ignore it and take the "full responsiblity" of your mind. it means - "whatever happens in my mind, i am responsible for it." and you will see soon that youre now ok! 😊

I thought schizophrenia’s neurochemical etiology is an INCREASE in dopamine and not a decrease. That’s why when levodopa (dopamine agonist) which increases the dopamine might cause psychosis Whereas, clozapine which is a dopamine antagonist decreases psychotic symptoms.

0:37 I believe that schizophrenia is caused by an increase in dopamine. That’s why meds for schizophrenia can cause Parkinson’s symptoms which is why it is important to have anti-parkinson drugs like Benadryl or other antihistamines.

This is excellent classic schizophrenia information. It may not fit this lesson to say this - but delirium may cause sick hospitalized elderly patients to say they see things. My daughter is often better able to calm these patients by not trying to orient to reality. Once she calmed a patient experiencing delirium by simply ordering some imaginary "loud children over in the corner" to quiet down so the patient could sleep. It worked.

Videos are very useful to review key concepts and highlights for NCLEX and nursing school prep. I am in Canada and maybe that's why my info is different but I have learned that acute dystonia of the neck, face, and tongue can happen within hours and is considered a medical emergency (although it is a side effect and part of EPS symptoms); 50 mg benedryl IV is given; can be severely painful and benztropine may also be given as well. So, in this case we would be contacting the HCP for orders. This is from Varcarolis Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (2019) and my instructor for mental health. Can you clarify?

Good luck on your NCLEX future nurses! Please keep in mind as you treat schizophrenic patients that they need all the validation despite the things they're experiencing is "not real". Because it is 100% real to them. I feel very strongly about this because my schizophrenic loved one has been traumatized again and again by the very system that's supposedly supposed to help them.

You can still acknowledge their feelings and present reality to them. You can say to them "I understand you are hearing things, but I only hear you and me talking." By going along with the hallucination you are not helping them.

Imagine if beings, who looked just like us, appeared on this planet, but they were 100's of times smarter. If they presented themselves as regular people to psychiatrists today, but spoke of things that are beyond our human understanding, the psychiatrists would in an instant be absolutely certain that these people were completely detached from reality, and were speaking nothing but total nonsense. Meanwhile, the psychiatrists claim to be in touch with reality, even though they obviously are not. If you are in touch with reality, then obviously you know of what it is that you are in touch with, thus you are not in need of any physics educations since the physics of reality are blatantly obvious to you, since you are in touch with reality.

Yes these are are correct behaviors and symptoms. A patient will never be given a Rx of lorazepam even though it works, so forget that. Haldol is not that effective and forget Geodon. A person with schizophrenia in a paranoid state will Not listen to a word you say! Always give them food and drink that are sealed… I know this because I live with someone who is schizophrenic 😞
