Daughter is a sophomore. Have been building a list since last year, but got overwhelmed because there’s so much out there. Not really sure how to be discerning. I will check out your list. Our unique situation: I think my daughter could be eligible for covered in-state (Louisiana ) tuition because of my husband‘s Military service. I will be confirming that. That would cover tuition only as I understand it. Are there scholarships that help students in that situation with books, room and board, living expenses only?

Scholarships provided to the school are usually applied towards direct costs first which are tuition, on-campus room & board, and school fees. Most colleges don't have the resources to track which scholarships cover which expenses. Therefore, most "tuition-only scholarships" may actually be used for room and board. Check the school to find out how they actually apply outside scholarships. After her first year of college, your daughter might also consider being a Resident Assistant/Advisor, a trained position in student housing. They usually receive a waiver for room and board.

I have a question for you. This year, I helped my daughter's boyfriend to get to his full cost of attendance at his college (a state college) by applying for scholarships both through the school and from organizations outside of the school. At this point, he earned about $700 more in scholarships than the total cost of attendance (per the school). They have taken this $700 out of a grant now so as not to exceed the cost of attendance. Is there anything we can do? Certain things that they have as fixed costs (housing, books, transportation) aren't even a fraction of the real cost. I'm not sure if he'll get any more scholarships for this school year but he might as I think he applied for loads of them...and it's not worth it if they just get taken out of his grant. We have called the financial aid office and they weren't much help as I guess this is a pretty unusual thing to have happen. Do you have any thoughts about how to deal with this situation? At this point, should he be turning scholarships back so others can get them if they are just taking them out of his grants anyways? I was unsure as some of them are renewable and they would be useful once he gets to the university next year (higher overall cost of attendance).

Even though the act of scholarship displacement is one that is dying out (and even being outlawed in some states), it's still happening in some schools, unfortunately. Here's a little more about it and some possible options: thescholarshipsystem.com/blog-for-students-families/scholarship-displacement-real-risk-financial-aid/

@@TheScholarshipSystem Thank you. I didn't know that there was a name for this practice. I am going to have him put together a list of expenses that exceed the ones listed in the COA and then find out how to appeal the COA. At this point, it's only about $700 that has been reduced from a grant, but I'd like him to be able to reclaim that if possible.
