School Safety Video for School Lockdown Emergencies

In the event of a school lockdown most schools do not have the facility to lock a classroom door from inside the room. Typically, in an emergency situation, the teacher has to find their keys, go into the hall and lock the door, putting themselves and their students at risk of exposure, then come back into the room and shut the door locking themselves in. At the same time they have to get their students into a safe location in the room and cover any windows. This a lot of time and is potentially dangerous.
School Safe minimizes the risk of exposure by allowing the door to be closed and locked at all times while still allowing ingress and egress without the need of a key. When I was in 6th grade, we had a lockdown, and me and my friend went to the bathroom before, and had NO clue that there was even a lockdown, so we just stood in the bathroom. Thank goodness it was just a drill

I remember watching this back in elementary school when I was afraid and obsessed with fire drills and lockdowns. Gave me chills everytime. Watching this now, I think we need these now more than ever.

Wouldn't an inside-lock be easier? I.e. locks with a key on the outside, but with a simple latch on the inside...like many doors have anyway...

Thats kinda like my school but I have front grates and back grates. They open them for the bus riders and new kids. We never had a real lockdown i think but i hope i dont cause florida, we have alot of shootings

In most schools, large and small, lockdowns occur many times during a school year. Gladly most of them are not serious. Although they cause disruptions and concern. One of these went off today. It was a false alarm, but considering the events on Friday, everyone was freaking out. I don't think I'll ever forget this, but my Chemistry teacher locked the doors, shut off the lights, and told us where the hydrochloric acid & potassium were. I've never seen that side of her before.

Thank you for your information. There are many ways to secure a campus. Some of which is teacher and staff training on what to look for with troubled students, make it more difficult for anyone to enter the building, secure classrooms easier, communication and coordination with police and fire departments, communication on the playgrounds and athletic fields and lots more. As long as the problem is being addresses more seriously at all schools that is a great first step to a safer campus.

Thank you for your comment. Of course an all electronic tag, access, etc... is much better for schools. BUT not every school can afford that technology. Our School Safe device is very inexpensive and most schools can afford to have them on all doors. Then as budgets allow more elaborate systems can be installed.

The School Safe device does effect the latching and locking of the door. Once the door is closed using School Safe you can still open it from the inside the same as usual. A school door is supposed to be able to be opened from the inside with one hand movement, by turning the handle or pushing a lever handle downward. Therefore we did not change anything to do with the door latching device. Thank you for your question.

Thank you for your comments and questions. Each school district has it's own steps to follow. This school wanted students to be moved to a location where they could not be seen from windows or doors.

One time there was a guy with a gun in his pocket at the main lobby in our school and as soon as the guy touched his gun we hear "The Crow(our mascot) is red I repeat the crow is red" and our whole class ran down the halls. Also I have 2 more stories. Once we were all eating and our guidance councelor was like "Take all your food and exit" we all laughed but he was like "Guys hurry! There's a gas leak and it might go!" So everyone threw away their food even though we were allowed to eat in the hall. It smelled so bad and we all wore masks until it was over. Also... One time it was my principals birthday and her favorite color was pink and after lunch we noticed a pink river of goo going down our hall and were all like: wtf

In Buckingham, England when school lockdown happened the siren was so scary... you have no idea! But we just turned the lights, computers, projectors and blinds and sat in our seats like normal because our french teacher knew it was just a practice. It was kind of awesome if you know that it as only a practice to make us safe.

A magnetic strip placed across the latch plate on the door frame allows the door to close and seal against the frame. This is very critical for fire related issues to prevent smoke from entering a classroom should there be a fire elsewhere thus reducing smoke damage. Teachers should always close the classroom door when exiting the building during a fire drill. for lockdown drill, simply remove the magnet. The latch is not a bad idea.

School Safe is also great for a fire drill. In a fire drill for my school, we all line up quickly and go outside. My school doesn't have School Safe, unfortunately, but it's still really great for it. :)

In my school district all the schools have doors that lock from the outside when they're closed and to open them from the outside the teacher needs a special card all the teachers have. It can open from the inside of a classroom. The 1 downside is you need to knock on the door if you're late.

In our class, we have a door that locks when you just simply close it. We scatter in the room so that we are'nt clumped together in the case that an intruder entered the room. I found a spot behind the class bookshelf that I fit in.

this was made in 2009 , the fact that there has been multiple school shootings since then and all schools don't have this device still is outrageous, so much could've been prevented

the school safe devices wouldn't have stopped the school shootings... All they do is lock the door. If a shooter really wanted to, he could bring a bomb or an axe and just break the door and kill everyone inside...

Thank you for your question. The School Safe device does not change the locking mechanism on the door. The door still opens in the usual way from the inside and opens from the hall with a key in the usual way. Please watch our video again.

at my school we have none of those and we dont have any sounds for a lock downdrill so if we had a real one would they come on the loud speaker and say lockdown?

This puzzles me. As a teacher I just lock my door from the outside. As long as we are able to exit from the classroom when necessary then we are ok. We tend to keep our door closed so no one can get in without knocking.

My school is built with special doors where you don’t need to manually lock a door, or flip anything. Close the door, and it’s locked. Then ppl can’t get in, unless they have a key. Ppl inside can easily get out simply be twisting it.

same!!! even when I have lockdowns at my school I freak out (on the inside Cuz if my teacher saw me freaking out she would get pi$$3d) and we only have it like once every 3 months (I know every 3 months!!) so I freak out every time

I can't remember whether my classroom door locks from in or out. But anyways, all the in/out doors that enter the school are always locked, noone can get in, but you can go out them. What we do in my school for a lockdown is we hide in a corner under a table, away from view. The teachers locks the door and shuts the blinds. My school is a 1 story so we have to shut the blinds. Then we hide and wait for all clear signal. We don't have an alarm, we have someone speaking over the intercom.
