+Colin G Well... despite there being 160 shooters all over the US, the odds are still much greater of your kid being raped, getting struck by an epidemic or hit by a car than it getting in an active shooting incident. Should we train them against rape, give them mouth masks all day long and forbid all traffic around schools for this reason? This training prepares for something that might happen (and then possibly saves dozens of lives), but while doing so, causes post-traumatic stress with a few hundred pupils (and now I'm pulling it to a stretch... possibly this might be the root trauma for our next generation shooter)
@JHattsy8 жыл бұрын
+Jurgen Gaeremyn The rate of shootings is going up and up, they're becoming more common because the media is talking about them so much. They're making them this big thing, people are doing it to make the news. These people need to be prepared for this.

When I was in middle school, we had an unannounced ‘intruder drill’ too- our principal went on the intercom and gave a distinct location of where the ‘shooter’, what gun they said and what they were wearing. The police would bang stuff against the walls to sound like bullets and it was the worst feeling hearing them slowly march on down the corridor. The classroom I was in was relatively close to the said location and we had to run. I remember everything I felt, I was so so nervous and people were having panic attacks, tripping and shoving each other trying to make it down the hallway, and I remember my friend who was in crunches at the time falling mid hallway in the sudden rush hour and I cried so hard once we were all outside. We ran so far, about a block and a half down. Everyone was uncontrollably sobbing. I mean, we were just 11 - 13 year olds. It lasted 30 minutes before we were all sent back to our classrooms and the day just went by as normal, but god, I will never forget the rawness I felt and the adrenaline I shouldn’t have had to survive. I can’t believe how terrifying this must be for actual victims, and my heart goes out to the recent Uvalde shooter victims and families.

I've had to run from what we thought was a school shooter. Turns out a student pulled a prank by calling the police, telling them another student was shooting up the school. The only thing that was going through my head was "I'm going to get shot in the back" I was fully expecting the pain as I ran out the school doors, through the field, and into the neighborhood across the street.

I've had a lockdown, people said they got firearms and bombs and stuff. I think the sad part is some kids were shaking and stuff and others were having fun. The best part was the teacher. She was so calm and kept a lot of the other kids calm. She was working and eating. We heard a couple loud booms right outside our window. Then we had to sit on the floor. It lasted like an hour or so. I'm glad it wasn't anything serious.

This happened at my school, Freshman year girls P.E the police department didn’t even talk with our school about it, they sent a deputy in undercover a Science teacher noticed the gun and told kids to run to a classroom started grabbing kids shoving them inside his classroom, our vice principal came over the intercom in panic, we hid in a bathroom for at lest 1 hour, if it was real, My science teacher deserves a metal or something, He was brave to call it out, and start grabbing kids. The trauma from that day, still lingers, kids can’t have headphones in the hallway and all teachers must stand outside there classrooms to watch.

i was 12 years old when sandyhook happened and 17 when parkland happened. i have a younger sibling by 2 years. the 2 years i was in high school with her were the most stressful because i had to worry about more than just myself. i dont think people who graduated out of k-12 before 2014ish realize how real this is for many of us. it could be any regular day at school and i'd constantly be looking for an exit plan. always thinking "what would you do in this very moment if...". i memorized my sibling's schedule so that i always knew where they should be in case something went down. even now, i still have this part of my brain always thinking about the best escape route/form of defense every time im anywhere. i'm jealous of some of the people who got to grow up before this was a regular occurrence, especially before columbine. y'all wonder why gen z is so fucking anxious and depressed, but we have a reason to be. even when u know it's a drill, it's still really scary (some people act cool, but tbh i think it's just them trying to not think about how theyre actually feeling). these drills are extremely important. those shooters are gonna come 1 way or another, you might as well prepare them for it in case it happens to them.

I had a couple of these in high school, it’s sad we have to do these now. I remember we had to put all of our desk in front of the door and turn off lights and be quiet. And I also remember my first week of my senior year, I was walking to the bathroom when one of the teachers yelled to go inside. I was so confused, so I rushed back to my class, and my teacher said someone was going to shoot up the school. He made all of us go into the closet and bruh we were all there for like 2 hours and it end up being some stupid ass kid from the middle school (it’s next to us) who didn’t want to take a test so he did a prank, but like wtf, everyone was freaking out cause we thought there was a shooter on the campus or at the middle school, people were crying, the police came it was a big mess. But like I’m so glad it wasn’t real 🙏🏼

My homeroom teacher in High School for 11th and 12th grade (she's also the history teacher), was once in the army, and, in case of a real intruder, if anyone starts audibly crying, laughing, or otherwise making noises that could alert our location, to knock out or shut up any students making noise because the last thing you want is someone crying and the intruder finding you because of it. We were told to always keep our composure, create a desk barricade, and grab something to use as a weapon, like scissors, text books, even pens and pencils. If it could be thrown, that was better, but anything was better than nothing. In her class, we took it seriously.

the hiding behind the desk thing isnt really to try to have the shooter not see you, it is supposed to keep the shooter away because the shooter would want to move fast to not get caught so if students were behind a desk then it would take longer for the shooter to get to them which might make the shooter just leave that classroom if that makes sense.

I remember when in my high school when it wasn't a drill. The school was put on lockdown due to sightings of a couple of armed kids roaming the halls. It turned out to be props later on but we didn't know that at the time. We were a school with magnet programs, essentially a separate school focused on various fields for those unfamiliar, and had prospective students and parents in on tour at the time. It was brutal for them, but oddly, there was a weird calm that fall over me and, from what I heard, most of the other students. While I'm not sure about the main school classes, we had begun to arm ourselves and prepare escape plans if the rooms had access to the outside. I know I was prepared to die that day, and I know at least a few other shared that sentiment before the lockdown was lifted. Apparently we made a good impression on the people visiting with how we were managing, one room even had a baby that the class helped keep quiet. But after that, business as usual. Oddly enough, after the threat passed we mostly continued on with our day, though most parents opted to take their kids out of school for the day. It's weird now thinking back on it. But I guess this goes to show just how normalized it is nowadays. I never really think I feel truly safe, there's always a chance that something could come up and blindside you anywhere. I can't really even think about it as sad anymore, it's just part of life. Knowing your exits, having some idea of where to run, and what might make a good makeshift weapon seems kinda second nature at this point. Even in college I feel no different.

There was a threat to my school once. It was an online non specific threat so we weren’t in any danger but we all thought it was really happening. My and my sisters ran into a classroom during lunch time. We went into the corner of the room on the floor. We had our backpacks in front of us and were freaking out. The teacher and students were complete idiots. She said “Ok we don’t know what’s going on but you can keep talking and eating lunch. Everyone was moving and making noise. Me and my sisters didn’t stop hiding until near the end when 1) we finally got information and 2) we heard no gunshots. During the whole thing I was texting my mom and I freaked out my dad. I was holding a chair to throw. (In hindsight I would have been too scared to). Basically if a shooter was actually in my school, I most likely would have been dead.

We had a lockdown in high school last year, and I wasn’t too bothered, just thought it was a drill. That is, until my teacher started Barricading the door with tables, chairs, and back packs. That was when I knew it wasn’t a drill and the feeling of dread hit me like a ton of bricks. He told us that if we heard something to jump out the window and run to the shed across from the back of the school. It was almost 2 1/2 hours long. Then a student got a video of a class in the front of the building screaming and crying. Apparently, the kid who threatened to do it on social media didn’t actually do it, but we went into lockdown as soon as we learned of the threat. It is really scary knowing that could be your last day on the planet and you never got to do the things you wanted to do or say the things you wanted to say. I told my friend about it and she told the counselors because she thought I was going to die and their school went into lockdown as well. People are so messed up.

About 2 days ago I had a lockdown drill in between classes, and thats the 2nd time ever that my school has ever had one between classes as they are usually like the standard ones which are during class. They only started doing that because of how frequent these shootings are becoming, which is honestly very sad knowing thats the reason. Its honestly scary though having these drills between classes because most students in my school all hangout in the lobby between classes which makes it very loud and hard to hear the intercom. So when they did it I never heard them say it and all of a sudden I saw students running into classrooms and teachers yelling at us to get inside. This literally terrified me and my friends because we had no idea if it was a drill (which it was) or if it was real. I know its not as terrifying as some of these other school drills but Its still just the fact that us students in America even have to do these kinds of drills so frequently.

Several years ago a school shooting occurred at the high school I attended. Except this shooting was done by the school resource officer (also a local police officer) who shot and killed a deranged man who entered the school, following a student who was late getting there. The school immediately went into lock down and the resource officer confronted the man who was armed with guns and intent on using them, in the hallway. She tried at first to diffuse the situation but when she was unable to do so she shot & killed him before he could endanger anyone else. The school was Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN. The officers name is Carolyn Gudger, and in my hometown she is a hero. She is the perfect example of what a school resource officer should be. A courageous woman who did her job, putting her life on the line for the students/faculty she was hired to protect. I was very disappointed that there was not a lot of media attention surrounding this incident, except for locally of course. I just really wanted people to see what a difference having a well trained, courageous police officer who takes their promise to protect and serve seriously on campus can make in these situations. I share this story so that the world will learn about this hero that is among us by the name of Carolyn Gudger
