Here's lesson 2 with my dad. Sorry for the lack of weekly updates, I just can't find a way to make them great right now. Hope this helps!

His chord changes may not be particularly *fast* but his chord changes are impressively CLEAN. His notes ring out very clear, you can tell he's truly practicing. Good luck dad!

What a coincidence, my dad's name also is Dad 🤔

Dad's doing great! I started 5 days ago myself. The first few days were very discouraging, especially that damn spider exercise. But now I can play most parts of Megadeth's Symphony of Destruction. Hopefully I'll see similar improvements like your pops has in the coming weeks as I continue to practice. Your first 7 days video has been immensely helpful in getting me off the ground with the learning process, thank you!

I can honestly say I feel your Dad's pain and excitement. I'm 63 and started learning a year ago. The frustration will turn into exhilaration. One thing, when your Dad ask you how long something might take to master a technique. Don't use the word "lifetime" in your answer. If he's like me he'll be thinking... WOW I have to live a lot longer now, HA HA. Great Job, love the videos!

I totally agree spider exercises exhaust me and I can play chords much longer. It's awesome your dad can watch these videos and track his improvements. I definitely see major progress in his playing.

Love this series. I think we're due for another. But it's a great series concept, for one. I feel like your dad and I may be of a similar music affinity. Just saw the the link for 74/75 (Great song, great group)?!? For some reason it's easy to miss, folks, but it's first in the description.

Great video, hats off to you both! I'm 70 and started playing again a few months ago. I struggled and got frustrated many times but persevered and last week I was practicing playing Simple Man and everything fell into place. Wow! What a feeling, I felt great! All I can say is keep on and you'll get there!

Update. On my third week now. I am able to perform the spider exercise a bit faster than your father and have been practicing switching between Am/C/D/G/Fbar/‘Em. I can switch between ‘Em and G with ease. I practice my song (Hurt) daily trying to perfect the opening; however, I focus on the exercises more.

D cord is hard to play clean. I'm 65. I found using the 4th finger pinky on b string helps it to sound clean.

Something that might help if you're having an issue with the head of the guitar dropping or just the guitar's positioning, in general, is how high you're seated. I'm 6'2" and held the headstock low and always felt like I was fighting the guitar - particularly the acoustic - until I made one change: I got a chair that let me raise the seat height. Sitting higher with your thighs sloping slightly down and away from you will instantly give you more room to hold the guitar and automatically pull the headstock up a bit. Basically, being in a better playing position will make it easier to physically manage the instrument. It took me too long to figure that out, but it also improved both my left and right hand technique! Or use the knives, that looks good too 🤣 Great video!

Thanks - I’m going to try that, I notice sitting on the couch or bed makes it worse.

@@KevinsdadNorb I had the same issue with the couch or bed. I got a pretty basic office chair with no armrests. It can be raised and lowered and being able to control that changed a surprising amount. If sitting higher helps fix guitar positioning issues but now it slides forward while playing (for me this sometimes happens with an electric), a strap 100% solves that.

I definitely need to do that - I’m sitting on the edge of the bed right now trying to play classical style and it feels alien. I’ve been meaning to build a stool anyway so now l have a reason to move that to the top of the to do list. Thanks for the advice.

If I went from F to G why not keep the same F position & slide two frets to G? Why reposition the G? Is it just to get a fuller six string sound?

What do you feel about doing a (60 min?) lesson with your Dad every week and posting it pretty much unedited? That would give us learners an insight into what to expect if we were to sign up to one-to-one tuition. I, for one, would like to follow something like that. Obviously keep doing what you're doing, it's great content!

Have him switch legs. Ah, la classical guitar style. I know as an older guitar player, things dont quite work like they use to. Found this out the hard way after a 15-year layoff.

@kevinnickens Thanks, Kevin. It will force his posture better as well. I notice that your Dad has bad posture, like I do. It will also help his wrist and hands once he starts learning barre chords.

We all now have new guitar goals: A copyright strike onKZfaq! Great progress. (I'm old enough to remember The Connells, by the way. If Dad breaks out Gin Blossoms or The Smithereens, he could go viral.)
