Just wanted to say thanks for the awesome videos... It's refreshing to see a new approach - one that addresses diagnosing the problem and fixing ONLY what needs to be fixed. I've been a victim of bad advice from seemingly knowledgable people too many times. As a diy'er I'm not afraid to try and fix, but finding the solution to the problem is usually the toughest part!When you're not an auto mechanic (ie just learning; can't diagnose) and you get misled enough, it's hard not to become jaded about the internet helpers.. Too many answers, not enough solutions. I recently got misled to do a tuneup to solve a bad idle (after cleaning throttlebody, maf, myself to no results). Fortunately, I needed to do one anyway so I didn't feel totally ripped off - just a little ;) Luckily, I found my solution from deeper analysis of my trouble code (the fix was a dirty egr valve - 1 hour to clean it, $8 of throttlebody cleaner - something a mechanic would never do). Just wish I found your videos before.. It would've kept me motivated to keep trying before taking it to my guy. Keep up the great work! The internet needs more people like you.. As for hits, don't worry, good things will come from your efforts. Good advice always catches on. Ps: the IAC comment was so true/funny - can't tell you how many times I've come across that as a solution. Many cheers from Toronto!

You´re helping us being more clever. I did this cleaning that you said in this video on a standard VOLVO S40 2005 T5 AWD, and the constant surging in neutral (and sometimes turning off by the motor when stopping) just disappeared. Problem solved. I used carbuclean chemical in aerosol. Note: only use oil based solvent for the acceleration body (or throttle valve) do NOT use WD40 or Carbuclean to clean plastic air hoses, sensors, the electronic part/sensor of the throttle valve, or the air filter plastic guard, since some microscopical particles could somehow go to the MAF (mass-air fluw) sensor. For MAF sensor cleaning I use only the MAF Sensor Cleaning, by CRC, being careful to never touch the small metal sheets of the sensor (inside the air hose). Also, never move the throttle valve with your hand or fingers, cause it will loose its programming.

Amazing video! I've been dealing with this for some time, except my car would idle in park - o-k and less surging/loping than that. This morning it sputtered when put into gear, stalled twice at a stop, but would fire right back up like nothing hapened. I did a halfhearted clean of the throttle months before without removing it; today i cleaned it properly and took it for a spin! What a difference that made! I'm interested to see my rpm's at idle and fuel trim over the next few days. Thank you!

As one who not only works with volvos but owns one with that engine I can tell you that cleaning the unit is only a stop gap measure. What happens is that one of the potentiometers that feeds the position back to the ECU starts go glitch. A bit odd though that you didn't find any fault codes. Usually presents with ECM9150. Really THE most common fault on these engines from around MY 99 to about 03 when they used that particular throttlebody. As a side note, the previous owner of my car cleaned it out when it started acting up and that fixed it for the time beeing. Then I bought it, knowing full well what I was up for. And wouldn't you know it, had it for almost a year and a half before I had to change it. Also, just found your channel, good stuff, keep it up! :)
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
Hmmm- confused. Seems to me the potentiometer was dead correct since it clearly read the throttle position correctly both before and after the repair.
@Frinkbit
@Frinkbit 10 жыл бұрын
Well I believe there are two potentiometers. One that sends an analog signal and a fallback which either sends another analog signal or possibly a PWM. Could be that the scan tool read the functioning one? The ECU on the other hand reads both and compares the values then try to come up with something, trouble ensues. Volvo did release an updated software that could prolong the inevitable by changing how the ECU handled the signals. But still, both a good cleaning and the new software is just a stop gap measure. The customer will end up replacing it, or rebuilding it with aftermarket parts. On more of a side note, what I've never really gotten is how cleaning the TB can remedy it, at least for a while. Either you massage the sensor back to life or it's just that it's more sensitive to crud when it starts to go bad. Both possibilities sound a bit off though.

+Frinkbit Sense this was not responded to, I'll take a swing: The TPS reports the position of the throttle plate. As shown by the first test done the reading was a bit on the high side. This is due to the large leak by the throttle plate caused by the carbon build up holding the plate open slightly. Clean off the carbon build up and it will allow the plate(s) to fully close down shut--and it will allow the IAC system to be able to do it's job correctly. The system treated this throttle plate being stuck partly open just like it would a vacuum leak if you think about it. Tries to compensate but all it winds up doing is either setting a code if it goes outside the parameters of the program--Or it attempts to settle down the idle with the IAC system, but it can't fully get the idle under control due to the plate(s) being stuck open. That's why it was surging. I expect if the issue became any worse that it would likely set off the DTC's I say "Plate(s)" due to the fact on some vehicles they have sometimes a single or double bore system. The same theory holds true on those, as they are connected by a common shaft, and any crud blocking one side partly open will hold the entire unit slightly open. That's about as simple as I can make this--and likely it's not 100% the best way to explain it. Just trying to make things simple for the layperson to comprehend.

Hi! Thanks for a great video! I own a 2000 S70 T5. Best and quickest way yo renove the throttle body, is by removing the battery, and work with your right arm from the side to remove the 4 bolts underneath with a small ratchet and 10mm socket on a short extension. Removing the fan will aid the process but is not a necessity! Thanks once again for a great post and keep up the good work.

I'm late to the party, but hopefully can shed some more light on this issue. Someone else mentioned the known internal faults with the ETM, so even with the cleaning, they may not be out of the woods. We have a great test built into our factory diagnostic tool, VIDA that compares the throttle units dual potentiometers and gives you a difference reading in percent. Throttles that exceed a set percentage are considered faulty. Also, the excessive buildup on the throttle plate is USUALLY caused by a clogged PCV system. The cleaning will only solve the issue for awhile until it builds up again. The PCV system will need to be serviced to prevent further fouling of the throttle plate. Hooked on the videos, and hoping to improve my own professional skills. Thanks! (10yr Volvo Tech)

This was a helpful video in diagnosing the dirty throttle body, Thank you! I ended up having the same problem on a XC90 with the same 2.5t engine, only the fault is more extreme (stuck open). I wanted to share a possible solution to your scan tool issues since Im good at diagnosing computer issues. I used a cheap ELM usb ODB reader connected to a laptop on my XC90. Initially, I also was only able to get the bear minimum PIDs with default connection settings, much like what happened to you in your video. It was telling me there were no stored codes even though the CEL was clearly on. What I tried was changing the connection protocol and was able to get (what I expect to be) the full set of PIDs that should be available in the ODB II spec. The issue is that by default, my laptop software tries a list of protocols to try to automatically detect the connection. As the software goes down the list of interface protocols, the first successful connection is using the ISO 15765-4 CAN **11bit ID**. Using that protocol gave me very few PIDs and reported no stored codes. Looking at the list of protocols, the next in the list was an option for ISO 15765-4 CAN **29bit ID**. After manually selection this protocol, I was able to get the full set of data PIDs, and stored codes. If you can manually set the protocol on your scan tool, try the 29bit ID option if you have it

IAC being an output device, I am glad to see you recognized that the PCM was commanding IAC response due to a dirty throttle body. Something to note, I've done this is the field, while monitoring IAC position, I will turn on the AC and even turn the steering wheel lock to lock and look at the reaction. It's really just a functionality test but it is not fool proof. I have read material(info that is not readily available for most DIYers) that has stated on some systems, never manually move the butterfly with your fingers. Apparently you can actually ruin the assembly be doing so. I just wanted to warn you. How true is this, I honestly don't know, yet I haven't damaged any yet. I thought Paul uploaded this, but that doesn't matter because this is an excellent video. Awesome job.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
Good advice Jarin, Indeed as a DIY I indeed find it hard to get more technical material. While it had occurred to me that manually moving the throttle with it plugged in might get my finger stuck, lol, I hadn't considered the possibility of damaging it as I never heard of that. If I had a bidirectional scantool my preference would surely have been to have the computer move it anyway, but to be honest, I was so not expecting this to work that I was figuring I would be replacing the assembly anyway. The car is still running perfectly and I am so pleased that this was fixed without buying anything.

@@SchrodingersBox Well the engine was loping pretty bad, especially after running for a while. It also has over 200k miles, & has spent it's entire life in NM & AZ. I totally understand your point however, but everything did make sense. I was planning to clean the TB anyways, as that's just something I do when I change the oil. I wasn't able to drop the TB out like I wanted, as some of my tools have gone missing; but I did manage to spray some TB Cleaner into the butterfly valve. I couldn't see any bare metal inside it before I started, cuz it was totally caked in carbon buildup. Now I can see the entire valve & spindle. It's not perfect, especially around the lip; but was definitely good enough to get the loping to stop. 😉 Now to figure out my electrical issue....

The thing that gets me about this vid is that you fixed it with such minimal scan tool data available, and still hit the nail on the head. Right on! Would we also have expected the excessively open throttle at idle to have cause an elevated LTFT, which would decrease during acceleration, kind of like a vaccume leak?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
no we would not. Yes the open throttle is letting more air in however that air is metered. It’s measured by the mass air flow sensor so there is no fuel trim adjustment from the extra air.

Schrodingers Box Yup, I agree again 100% lol..bittersweet is putting it mildly :) For your future reference, and of course I am no Volvo expert, but there is some technical data out there online about this exact throttle body that matches your symptoms. This TB uses whats called "thick film potentiometer" technology which has a fairly high failure rate that causes symptoms similar to what you have on this car. I bring it up only because of my GM experience and the common TB issues with the 2006-2007 ish cobalts, and pontiac waves etc. They would come in for TB DTC's, or intermittent limp in modes, or weird idles and surges. 99 out of 100 times you would follow all proper circuit diag and find no prob and it would eventually lead to replacement of the TB. Sometimes you could clean the TB and clear the code and the car would be fine for another 3 months or 50,000km but eventually would come back with same issue. GM never did release a TSB or software update to the best of my knowledge but we changed hundreds of these TB's at the 2 different GM dealers i worked for and that was the only fix. I started taking these TB's apart and what I found was the "thick film potentiometer" would have one out of 4 tracks that had failed, and this was on EVERY unit i took apart. Basically it would have 4 fingers sliding on tracks like a fuel pump sending unit only times 4. And one of these tracks would have the coating or "thick film" crack and peel off making the finger struggle to make contact, causing intermittent issues. I bring this up because this Volvo year make and model uses a similar 4 fingered thick film potentiometer that apparently has the same failure issues. Here is one article that might be useful home.comcast.net/~donwillson/tech_info.html If this car comes back in the future and the TB is still fairly clean, this may be worth looking at. Yes Im a geek…I know :)

Here is a tip for Hondas with MAP sensors- If they lope at idle, the first thing to check for is a vacuum leak. If a Honda with a MAP sensor has a vacuum leak it will rev up and cut injector pulse and reestablish pulse and rev up and cut injector pulse, instead of a steady high idle. It will do this more aggressively the larger the vacuum leak. Other cars may do this also, but I have seen many Hondas do this. A Honda will not idle above about 2000 RPM even if you take the throttle body off. I once had a customer that was driving a Civic with a large vacuum leak for a few months and the TPS went out. The ECU did not detect the thtottle being opened and the car would not accelerate even if floored in neutral. It just loped more and more agressively. Strange.

Was the carbon too much or was there a chance that throttle induction service *without* removing the throttle body would have cleaned it?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
Hi 12V. I am not sure what a throttle induction service is but by context I gather this is probably some chemical cleaning of the throttle to decarbonize it. I will tell you that it took a good 10 minutes with a wire brush and a half a can of carb cleaner to remove the carbon. The buildup was clearly preventing the proper backwards throttle movement because it was so dense. If a "throttle induction service" does not involve some actual mechanical scrubbing, I highly, highly doubt it would have been effective in this case. There is no way, in my opinion, this repair would have been effective had I left the throttle body on the vehicle while attempting this repair.
@12vgs8606
@12vgs8606 10 жыл бұрын
Looks like it would not have worked; Manual cleaning on this vehicle is quite labor intensive. After you had taken half the engine off to get to the throttle body, did you see any rationale why engineers did it their way?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
12vgs8606 Other than they just wanted negative attention, no, I see no reason for this design lol. As a matter of fact, it seems particular in this model which is a turbo model,the routing with the turbo induction has to literally wrap around half the engine because the throttle body and turbo are as far apart in diametrically opposite locations as possible. Then again, with the system being electronically controlled I guess there is no reason for it to be accessible. There's nothing to adjust or do with it like with a normal throttle

TPS is not moved by anything but the pedal. I guessed the DMFW as an origin but that has been replaced like 8 - 9 K Kms ago. in my understanding > TPS showing 16% is the closed position... cable has play so that's not an issue. I checked the butterfly valve .. it is closed (well tiny light can pass ...) Will make some cross check by testing my friend car (same engine). If the same % will be shown... then I can still move to the MAP...maybe it has some lag and creates an oscillating loop with the idle valve / crank shaft sensor when trying to set an RPM.

aprt from the Idle... i checked the sort and the long term fuel trims.... Interesting... of course i was using a common Scanner tool and torque softeer via Bluetooth. So... LTFT - 7,8 (yep minus 7,8) ... the faster i drove... the lower it went... had -10,4 when driving at 3800 RMP. coasting of course put all trims to 0 in 3 sec... Havent found other data showing fuel trims which makes sense.. have 2 other fuel trim data but those are stuck at 32% all the time... and this car has 2 sensors only ( 2004 ford 4cyl.
