It's extremely rare to play THIS music at HIS age with such a maturity. One could say it's an old pianist playing: and that's the biggest compliment a pianist can receive. The same I'd say for his Bach's Partita n. 1, played during the same Prague recital.

schubert was 30 when he composed the sonata and lang lang also about 30 when he played this in Prague

@@aristoteles2797 Look, I'm complimenting Lang Lang, not insulting him 😅. And, one may say that 30 years in 1820s aren't comparable to 30 years of nowadays. Don't you agree?
@lennycavallaro50627 жыл бұрын
He takes the first movement at what is certainly a "dangerous" tempo -- far slower than we usually hear -- yet he shapes the long lines beautifully. Throughout the sonata, the play is clean, the articulation is crisp (most notably in the 4th movement), and the dynamic balance and motion are well shaped. This is an absolutely remarkable performance!

There has been so many negative comments about Lang Lang which I think is nothing more than jealousy. He is truly a remarkable & unique artist & musician. He conjures up new emotional & spiritual surprises every time. He does break a lot of traditional interpretation from time to time but is always fresh & inspiring.
@levim.35052 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's jealousy necessarily. It's rather disappointment, because Lang Lang has proven how incredibly great he can play the piano and yet the still chooses to go down the commercial route and put showmanship over the essence of the music. His recording of Liszt's Réminiscences de Don Juan in Carnegie Hall from 2003 is my absolute favorite recording of that piece. I don't think it's been ever played as well before. That being said, I don't like a lot of his recordings because I think they cater to a less enthusiastic audience that puts on "Beethoven's greatest hits" during christmas dinner, which of course is perfectly fine, but they are different listeners than those who are almost compulsively obsessed and even snobbish when it comes to classical music. The ones that have the score in hand and really try to understand and actually listen, not just putting some tune on for the sole sake of it being on. Freaks, I guess you could call them. And those are probably the ones that dislike him.

Lang Lang is one the very few pianists who are capable to penetrate the tortured soul of Schubert,especially in this Sonate he is remarkable because he makes us feel that Schubert knows that he is going to die very soon.It's terrible and so tragic that it is very hard to listen to that music,and harder,naturally,to play it.He brang me to tears,he has such a deep soul...

It's much like in my imaginary hearing of D960 - all the swelling climax never comes about but ebbs away leaving a tense expectation - what I didn't quite expect of Lang Lang. He came to appreciate his public, or some other part of it and he takes time and let's us take time to do it. It is so much in a spirit of Schubert to take a simple tune, that one can hear on a street corner and take it further, to come back then and check if there is anybody left behind and do it again and again...

if Lang Lang's picture had been replaced by Richter or Rubinstein there would be no vitriolic comments. Appreciate the sound, don't tear down the performer himself. Judge his artistry if you dare, for one doesn't become a renowned classical musician in the 21st century for nothing
@begonae.2566 Жыл бұрын
Richter or Rubinstein would never play like that. For high-level concert piano players, no one questions virtuosity. Burying the depth of a masterpiece under your own ego, just to do something different that sets you apart from the rest... that's a choice that only speaks of the person, but Lang lang will never be a model like Richter or Rubinstein, for a genuine pianist.

I am not a fan of Lang Lang but while he is not exactly on the level fo Richter, Lupu or Brendel (D960 summits! I wouldn't expect many to be really), and despite his usual losses of tension here and there, it is a fine performance, not as badly thought out as some comments pretend. What's awful is the coughing, unfortunately. Thanks for this download.
@giggierosion192010 жыл бұрын
Brendel is indeed the summits of D960. But for Ritcher, I don't think so. Ritcher's D960 is too slow which makes the music a bit tardy. For exam, Ritcher's presentation is not acceptable!

borninparis After listening this sonata and D 959 by Krystian Zimerman yesterday (June 19, 2015) I have the impression that most pianists really didn't understand Schubert at all. Like in the late symphonies Zimerman had a wide range in dynamics, colors of sound combined with a rhythm (almost as good as Artur Rubinstein) and his tone! Of course it's not "mainstream Schubert" but for my taste better than everything I ever heard (including Brendel and Rubinstein)!

I am a fan of Lang Lang with some reservations. I heard him play this sonata at the Walt Disney concert hall in Los Angeles about 4 years ago, and was pleased with that performance, very much like this current recording. However, I heard him play the Tchaikovsky piano concerto No. 1 at the same hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Dudamel, and he totally ruined that performance with tempo's that were so fast as to destroy the structure of the piece. He hit every note spot on, but just way to fast. I suspect his technique will improve as he matures.

Yeah, that's true. Like all of us. To be honest, there were some parts where I felt he bangs a little bit. Maybe it's the piano he's playing. But some parts don't sound that good. He breaks the melody at parts. And yet he does play it in quite a improvised and expressive way. And he has some very beautiful moments and be brings out some interesting parts of the piece which although I don't think is very tasteful is very fresh and interesting.

@@thesedreamsarefree I do not agree. One of the most criticized things about Lang Lang is that his ego is above work. Virtuosity and technique are not in doubt when it comes to high-level concert piano players, but being able to reach and transmit the deep essence of the work, without the ego protruding above... this is only reserved for a few few, and certainly Lang is not among them.

In the first two minutes, I feel quite suprised, then tiredness came to me. It's typical when I listen to Lang Lang's romantic pieces, (Not sure did he tried Bach). He is emotional, and he expresses it through performing, or, acting. But when I listen to Zhu Xiao-Mei's interpretation, Schubert - Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960 (Zhu Xiao-Mei) my feeling is that she knows how to let the note talk for itself, not just to please the audience.
