One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. I heard him many times in concert and once in 1977 had the pleasure of a long talk with him in a hotel in Riga where we were both staying.

@@1947laurence Well, I had an equally amazing experience. In 1966, being a 17 y.o. student of piano, I accompanied my famous teacher Zbigniew Drzewiecki on his trip to Moscow where he'd presided over the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition jury. For those not familiar with his name - Drzewiecki assisted in establishing the International Chopin Piano Competition, served upon their juries from 1927 until 1971, and eventually established the so-called "Polish school" of teaching and playing Chopin with many famous pupils to his credit including, among others, Mitsuko Uchida. In Moscow, just before the 3rd round of the competition I had a privilege of dining in the Metropol restaurant with my professor and - believe it or not -..... Nadia Boulanger (she must've been over 80, full of class and dignity) and Emil Gilels. I do not remember the exchange of words (a mix of French and English), but what I still do is Emil's surprisingly short, covered with freckles fingers. Since my own fingers were a bit too short (yet still longer than those of Bella Davidovich), I thought there is some hope for me. Well, it turned out that a 4-year long, ruthless education in Gnesinych School of Music had ruined my right wrist and in 1968 terminated any hopes for being a concert pianist anyway. Nevertheless, wonderful memories, love of music, and ability to experience its wonders remained for life. And I can't thank God enough for that.

Clarity, power, endurance, sensitivity: that are the main qualities resuested by these very richvariations. Gilels possesses all that. It is always difficult to say whic is THE BEST version, but for sure, he is among the best ones. It is an enchantment for the heart and the spirit to hear him in these variations.

Emil Gilels in his playing has always delivered a lot. I love his Schumann and his Rachmaninoff.

Such vibrant rhythm-what an orchestral timbre he produced at the piano! The man was a creative genius-he captures the fantasia elements perfectly balanced with the structure within each variation-remarkable playing that is a model of virtuosity and musicality, to say nothing of a technique at work in service of the music at all times.

The part in the 9th minute... amazing! from wich etude is?
you wanna know why gilels sometimes had his "little" finger bandaged up? for the same reason as argerich.... he was pushing the limits of a scheißway... if bösendorfer then no bandage... no infos about the hall... looks like nyc.... but life has taken its toll on him at this point... and i am not immune from that either

in my opinion there exist no pianist. they all are interpret of the big great composer. - the composer is the pianist. he is both.- people like lang lang, yuja wang, emil gilels, ect. should not be called as pianist. that is wrong word. should be called interpret. but many people will never understand that. doesn't matter how high their degree is. even wikipedia dont understand it. people just listen but dont care about the history of classical music. and then they make some stupid piano competitions and become trained like stupid horses who only know how to jump. same sound becomes the melodie. Fast like a running horse with an clumpsy leg. if you go nowadays to pianoteacher you think. '' the hell'' what are you? are you teacher? they mostly dont understand music i made experience. sometimes i think. they just been realizing whole live that they looser cause they could not be number one in piano competition. and they just lost their way, cause they though they must be maybe. lol. they cant teach. exactly they cant feel music. even they come from a 6 years study. but wanna get much money. there are too many of them. I stopped to count.. that why i learn piano by myself. my parents never gave me money for lessons. and piano teacher mostly suck. well i am done. im going. what is the piece at 18:13? so great melancolic.. sound.
