His work is crucial for any percussionist who intends to take the art form to heart, and perhaps take it higher. I think of the technical skills of many when I watch and listen. As Buddy Rich was to the set, Giovanni is, to most everything "percussion". There is a language here. Freestyle.

Buen alumno de los grande..... El tata guine.... el niño alfonso.... Anga.... Yoraldy..... la diferencia que los grandes tocan con sentimiento.... Before I got my drums, I hadn't even heard of him. When I brought them home, I looked up 'conga' on YT. Clicked on GH's 'At Home in Kissimmee' solo video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcipfNlq08WRlGQ.html). I nearly threw the drums out onto the street.

Any one know the mic set up here? Specifically whats being used to capture the bass and all the presence?

Firstly, sorry to hear about Giovanni fingers. God bless him. At first i thought Shure SM98's but then i saw those mic clips. Shure makes those shock mount clips but i've only seen them for the MX12 and 18's. I could be wrong but they are probably Audix M1255B miniaturized mics. If they did this in a studio then I'm certain there are also room mics. I also see a mic mounted much lower on his main drum. The 'omni' response curve goes pretty low so thats probably what you're hearing. It also has a boost at 6k & around 10-12k.

Met him a few times. I actually have videos on my channel performing. IMO he is the best but many others are incredibly great with diff. Styles. Giovanni is his own "style."

Carlos Vieira Giovanni is removed from the stage because he was diagnosed with diabetes, and consequently he has lost two fingers. He is currently hospitalized.

@@6481622 Yes, I also admire him a lot, he is a legendary percussionist. the friends of percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo have come together to shake hands economically, so they have created a fundraising campaign on the Go Fund Me website. Hidalgo has been offstage for two years due to his diabetes condition. Javier Raez, promoter of this initiative, explained in the petition that because the musician has not been able to work fully during these months, he has accumulated bills for medical services, so the amount collected will be to pay those bills and other expenses of first necessity. The campaign aims to reach $ 100,000, which will go entirely to Hidalgo.
