One of the best DUST my wife and I have seen, and we have watched quite a few. For those who have canned it, not being able to find meaning in the film, allow me to explain. Comets have been considered through out millennia to be "bringers of death," this one however occurred at the precise time life was being brought into the world. Thus one meaning for the name Anomaly. Secondly the astronaut did not die when he should have been destroyed by the comet. Third the scientist lost his wife and the child she carried when she hemorrhaged while he was working on his discovery/prediction of the comet and he was unable to be there for her; thus the comet did live up to the ancient prediction of being a "bringer of death." In addition Haley died during labor but as the comet appeared she resuscitated, again presenting an anomaly. Also, as the astronaut heard the baby cooing over their special frequency, he realized that he indeed was still very much in love with Haley thus love was reborn imparting life, as opposed to death, to love. We plan to re-watch to attain a better grasp of the philosophical nuances concerning the human condition.

Gotta say, this left me with more questions than answers. It's like everything was a background prop: the comet, the orbiting photo lab, the defamed scientist, his wife and her miscarriage plus the apparent virgin birth. Also, who's grave was that? I have been very impressed with most of the DUST content. This has lots of great imagery, but seems convoluted and shallow in actual content and story. Beyond artsy to a point of noise for nothing. Even some decent acting, but little for the characters to grab hold of. I have seen quite a few things in my day, where the end credits roll and I am left with a feeling of "What was that all about?" I just added another to that list. I am not a stupid or shallow individual - I hope. But I'm not sure what the purpose of this film really was. It eludes me.

@Marcus Hyde - having watched ‘Anomaly’ a few minutes ago, I felt I wanted to comment on it. I was having difficulty finding meaningful words to convey my feelings. Then I read your comments. I too consider myself quite an intelligent and fair judge of the nuances of artistic creativity but rather than re-invent the wheel, if I may, I’ll just say “ditto”. I couldn’t have put it better myself. Some good acting (I can’t fault any of the performers) but the content didn’t do them many favours. I really wish I could be much kinder, and I really do want to be but this film, despite having very good production quality, was, sadly, a little lacking. Needs work for a full theatrical release, I would say.

I figured the writers we not capable of putting a good story together when they had the NASA guy say there is no president for a comet grazing our atmosphere. WOW!!!! gona write a story about comets and you don't know this happens every day. Then the 911 call... ummm yeah ok 911 system didn't happen outside of major cities till 1989. Then the big one!!! a space telescope in the days of film.. grrrrrr as one of the engineers that worked on the HST the suspension of disbelief just does not work. The first digital camera designed by Chuck Spoolhoff for mapping the moon came during the Apollo program and still would not have been suitable for a space telescope. Every aspect of the story shows the writers ignorance of the subject mater it addressed. This is basically an example of how NOT to do suspension of disbelief.

Hahaha... Anthony b, a woman magically became pregnant in this short. I think we can let those issues slide. Also, no one but you knows enough about the history of the 911 emergency system and such for it to be an issue for us. I think we just want the darn thing to make sense. Too many times I've sat though a short film waiting for a pay off at the end but only left with that wtf did I just watch feeling. I watch these shorts because I'm looking to be told a story. Instead, frequently I'm frustrated trying to interpret or create meaning. Ugh. There's another 36 minutes of my life wasted.

I guess I’m one of the few in the comments that loved this. It’s may have not been straight forward but a lot of things in life aren’t. We live in a day and age where we just want to be entertained and not have to think. This was outside the box and refreshing to see. Try watching it again and let the story take you away without any judgment or thought. Ofc there are things I don’t like but overall I thought it was a beautifully shot and scored filmed that made me think throughout.

Superb screenwriting about ... well, anomalies ... the start not just of life but something being 'born' that isn't the norm for you. What spoke to me was those 'first time' moments we all have to face i.e. rejection, realization of something, death, yearning, understanding, love, fear, a beginning. Everyday we take for granted our way of being and fall into a routine then something different happens that creates a 'change', an awareness of something 'new' in our consciousness. For example you could be single for 50 years before finding love and that discovery gives life to a new way of being.

Speeding up, and shrinking down the end credits does a disservice to those who put together this little gem. It adds time to contemplate the story, and hold the mood. as the titles roll. Superb production values. and score, weaving style and narrative through a variety of time periods. It presents a challenging and non liner framework for the interlocking events that transpire. Shades of Kubrick and Malick permeate this film. slow leisurely and mind boggling. Solid acting, as all the actors are put through emotional work outs. Excellent all around. Leasurely paced, as it jumps from narrative to narrative, it moves at its own pace. certain interludes may be perplexing. For me, thats a good thing. Five enigmatic stars out of five.

@@keithscommunityanddomestic9513 I don't think that conception of a human is an anomaly at all. It happens everyday. A comet entering the atmosphere happens once in 10s or 100s of millions of years. She announces she is pregnant and he dumps her because they never boinked, so there is some vague immaculate conception thing, just as the he goes to space and almost gets obliterated by a meteor shower and she gives birth to the mystery child and almost dies but somehow everyone lives. I think you may have missed the point here, the underlying message in this short is to celebrate the creation of life on earth as we know it. It has been beautifully constructed to combine the girl in the film as a metaphor for Mary and the birth of baby Jesus. I had to watch it and deconstruct it a few times for it to make any sense. There are tiny little morsels of reference to this throughout the film, this combined with the musical score and the outstanding cinematography makes this one of the most outstanding shorts I have seen in a long time.

@@jerryc3050 Cloverfield's story wasn't vague. "deliberately insensitive" is subjective. One could also say that many horror movies are deliberately insensitive for being so shocking, grotesque, jump-scares, and gory. I don't have a problem with the shaky cam. Others, clearly, do. By "this movie" do you mean Anomaly? I'd agree that it's a bad movie, as are many many movies on Dust, because they are cryptic and require the audience to make sense of what the plot is, not just a vague ending.

I am all for the idea of developing writers and artists testing their material on the disaffectionate public... its a good learning curve, and I have certainly seen some very well thought out presentations, but sadly I have also seen more than enough poorly considered exhibits here and have therefore decided to draw a line in the snow. Sadly, for any film maker, it is probably the most valuable lesson to learn. Try not to lose your audience.
