During a sleepover, four 9-year-old girls obsessed with space embark on a secret mission in their cardboard rocket. When Dad returns home, what will become of their mission?
We're celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing with the exclusive premiere of "Space Girls" on DUST.
"Space Girls" by Carys Watford
#DUST #scifi #shortfilm
More About Space Girls:
'Space Girls' is a celebration of the power of imagination, the importance of STEM education and girl power!
I wanted to make a fun adventure film about the wonders of space & the importance of space travel. The innocent wonder of childhood - where playtime feels real, alive & magical - felt like an ideal setting in which to explore these ideas.
I was conscious about wanting the protagonists of the film to be a band of girls. The girls are smart, confident & determined - they are obsessed with science & space & want to study hard to achieve their dreams. Geena Davis’ research has compellingly shown that female characters in kids’ media are often underdeveloped, sidelined or solely there as a plot device. It is important that we promote female agency & science positive goals for the next generation.
Inspired by the adage - “If she can see it, she can be it” - I want ‘Space Girls’ to promote & inspire young girls to dream big & work hard so that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Even becoming an astronaut & travelling to outer space!

I love this film! I was just like those kids, a die-hard fan of Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, when I got my first space helmet in 1952, at age 6. Now, 67 years later, I would be delighted to play space missions with those little astronauts. I suppose there must be a place for a space great-grandpa. When my oldest, now 44, was 6, I built him a space ship out of old fiber barrels, army surplus parts, and imagination. His space suit got all my old Air Force patches and ribbons, and a helmet made from a plastic outdoor lighting globe with embroidery hoops for the attaching rings.

You are absolutely right. This is a parenting video. Mom fought their dreams, so they went ahead and dreamed anyway. Father did play with them for one minute, but entertained the dream they had, and they listened. As simple as that - listen to your kids and support them, that's all it takes.

@MoralSingularity hahaha, no leveling the playing field so that it is even isn't making it harder for boys. Nobody is telling boys they are shit, or that men are evil. They are telling girls they are worthwhile and women that they too can be leaders. Reverse the genders of those kids, would you blink about 4 boys reluctantly allowing their little sister to play? Remember that building one group up, does not pull another group down.

I think is important, not only for children, but also for scientists and engineers to remember, our curiosity, imagination and playfulness is what brings us the greatest results. Everything from placing a telescope into space or mount a satelite on a comet. Such crazy ideas, yet they were not possible have it not been for our persistence to pursue even the wildest dreams.
