More About "System Error" :
Every day, George works his job at a dingy convenience store, desperately hoping for a friend - but George is also an immobile robotic service unit, and immobile robotic service units do not have friends. When human customer Sid tries to tell George a joke, the simple robot is baffled. So, he sets about editing his code to learn how to laugh. Meddling with one’s code, however, can have unexpected consequences - consequences George is going to need Sid’s help to deal with. A film about friendship, being okay with being broken, and the inner life of Unit CB-94/X0172AB3982-2. Please do not tamper with the store attendant. Have a nice day.

I liked how the film still committed to the dystopian world despite it's lighthearted and comedic tone. Everyone is wearing the same outfit along with an identification card while the products at the store are "Warden Issued", which made the robot's goal to make a joke and to "lighten up" that much funnier. Great flick!

First thing I noticed, very well done. Actually reading soviet citizens it was pretty much like that in their stores. Not really the stereotype we think that they had empty stores, most of the time they were full, they just had one type of everything and was plain. Wow, personifying an AI? That's such a fascinating concept. Like, personifying it to the point that it shows him as an actual person in another dimension? That's brilliant. And the fact that George had the ability and will power to try to delete his own "Demon" was really neat. He was able to acknowledge that the demon wasn't physically real and attempted to get rid of him. Reminds me of how anxiety and Intrusive thoughts are all in our heads and how no one else can see them but you. It's often hard for humans to get rid of those thoughts but for George, he simply had to pick yes or no. Or at least he tried to. The demon was still there but I think George just decided to leave it be and not let it worry him for now. Thoughts? Loved this short film so so much, thank you for making my morning better♡
@seanstumpf4190
@seanstumpf4190 3 жыл бұрын
I interpret it the same. What's even cooler is he deleted his 'Daemon'. This is an actual programing process used in many things today. Its essentially a background process that runs independent of the main system. In this case the Daemon actually manifested itself to George as an actual Demon. Brilliant stuff!

Matt the director here (I'm sharing the replies with George, but I think I'll take this one) - this is a lovely interpretation. Certainly I wanted to write a film about the challenges of anxiety and mental health, and hoped it would be a really inclusive idea that while we may want to fix ourselves, actually the small strange "errors" we have are what make us unique and human and should be celebrated. George wouldn't have made a friend without his demon! Thanks for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it Fiona!

it reminds me of a painting I did in highschool called Don't Cry Adam, We're out of Mineral Water. The painting was abstract geometry with some "impossible shapes" in it. In the centre was a small human figure hugging a large apple. The apple represented technology and it was a comment on how we complain about technology until the world stops making sense, then it becomes our friend.

Brilliant on every level. Nick Nemeroff the guy who voiced George deserves an Oscar - what a subtle, sophisticated performance breathing life into that box! He created a likeability and robotic vulnerability on a par with Wall-E. And the script - wow, not one word wasted! Full marks for this. And my favourite moment - that oh-so-Aussie home-spun wisdom of 'Thought you might just need to get out of the shop'. Perfect. Australian Sci-Fi is so underappreciated. Infini, 2067 are just the first to come to mind. The acting, the writing, the STORY has thought and care put in it. Sure, the props of a work like Infini are just not up to 21st century hollywood standards yet it was a tour de force, fantastic sci-fi gem of a story. It really made a man think, reflect all the while being a great diversion. Its the same with a lot of Australian Sci Fi stories on Dust. Keep up the great work!

*Satisfaction, sadness, surprise, suspense and supreme watchability* ! There are so many parallels with reality in this short film. As we grow closer and closer to complete automation, it's not difficult to personify the gadgets that get us through the day. I feel that this film not only examines that idea, but takes it right to the breaking point. Elements of realism as well as some over-the-top concepts combine to make _System Error_ a great film.

Very cool of you to give the voice actor real face time in the piece. It also helped the story quite a bit giving a human face to the voice.

I loved seeing the sea prompt and the core dump. I did mainframe programming for years and a core up is very familiar. Are used to be able to decipher it as well. The assembly language. I enjoyed this.
