In this week's video I'm talking to Dr Kan Cao who, when researching the potential of chemical antioxidant methylene blue for treating an accelerated aging condition, discovered its benefits for our skin, including UV protection and prolonging the life of skin cells.
She has since founded the Bluelene skincare company which offers a range of methylene blue-based products.

I was bold to try methylene blue for hair toner that worked great to take brassy like orange out of Hair then got bolder to add from drops to squirts from dropper in shampoo/conditioner to make beautiful blue highlights that gets compliments all the time. I add one drop with night time care products and notice improvement of thickness and hydration and also balance of tone in my face!

Clare, you asked an excellent question about penetration of methylene blue into the dermis and I would be interested in hearing a more complete answer. I took a look at the Nature paper. They did not do a penetration test. Without data indicating that methylene blue reaches fibroblasts in the dermis, it is unreasonable to expect direct effects on fibroblast senescence, regeneration or direct inducement of collagen and elastin production by fibroblasts. As a result, much of the paper's data showing improvement in skin structure are only theoretical. If the compound can't get to the cells, it's not really fair to expect it to work. I look forward to hearing a more complete answer from Dr. Cao about skin penetration.

Funny enough I was actually doing some research on this topic yesterday completely unrelated to this video. From what research I've conducted, you could use 1% hyaluronic acid powder or granular soy lecithin to aid in delivery. Alongside that, MB is 284.4 Dalton of which, as a rule, 500 is the threshold for what can be absorbed by the skin. While this isn't DEFINITIVE confirmation, I think it's safe to say that penetration isn't an issue. I would also like to see more thorough testing in this regard.

@@denofpigs2575 Thank you for addressing my question. I was so bothered by the interviewee' mumbo jumbo response to Claire's question, that I didn't actually go and look to see whether there was any literature. I looked at 2 studies. There are others as well but the first two were consistent so I didn't bother to look at all of them. So this is not definitive, but suggestive. The first study found no diffusion of methylene blue into the epidermis after 3 hours. (Methylene Blue diffusion in skin tissue July 2004Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 5(30) DOI:10.1117/12.572047). This was a diffusion study, not a penetration study. They bathed the skin sample in methylene blue and measured how much was absorbed by the skin over time. There was no absorption at 3 hours. The second study was a formal penetration study (PMID: 37242613). They looked at the penetration into the skin after 16 hours of exposure. No Methylene blue penetrated through the skin. After 16 hours, about 10 percent of the MBE was found in the viable epidermis. They didn't measure penetration into the dermis because that was not their target. So it is highly questionable that sufficient levels of MBE make it through the epidermis into the dermis. And even if MBE made it into the dermis, the first study indicates that the interaction of MBE with glycoaminoglycans like hyaluronic acid would prevent its diffusion throughout the dermis. So yes, my question stands.

Just because we are told to use retinol does not make it right. Think about what we‘be been told- low fat, low sugar - now we know the truth. Oh, and we were told in the 50s that smoking was good. I’ll believe Dr. Cao.

I believe science and there is an abundance of robust studies on Tret. Can you cite the study from the 50's that said smoking was good? Do you mean "we were told' to mean the advertising, because we all know we can't trust that. We do acknowledge that KZfaq is one of the latest and maybe very successful forms of advertising.

@@cindysmallwood2695y mother’s doctor recommended she start smoking in the 1950’s to help calm her ‘nerves’. Just research some of the smoking advertisements from that era. Saw one from a company that said doctors endorsed their brand. I don’t remember which brand but it was a major company. Every ad that portrayed sexual innuendos had people smoking along with every movie constantly showing people smoking. Inside. Whether there were actual studies or not means very little. It was a cultural attitude. As far as studies my understanding is initially studies were squashed by the tobacco companies so what you’re looking for may not exist and may not have been done as smoking wasn’t suspected as a link. As the poster stated we were told and it was generally accepted that smoking had benefits, she didn’t say there were scientific studies. Once those started coming out in the sixties the acceptance of smoking changed.

This is a fantastic interview. Oxybenzone actually disrupts hormones! They say 'it may' interfere with metabolism, thryoid function, and many other processes that are regulated by hormones. It has been detected not only in urine, but also in breastmilk, blood, and amniotic fluid! I for one refuse to take any chances with - "it may cause". 'It may' to me means it does, they just don't want to hurt the bottom line. How many products have this ingredient? Especially when there are several other, including purely organic options available - we should not put our health in jeapordy. Thank you for this!

I mainly use it at night in the hope of boosting the effects of my red light mask! If I was using the No7 serum I’d apply the MB night cream as my moisturizer after applying the serum. Hi Rosie. I have recently started using an LED eye mask in the morning and love the ease of being able to wear it while I'm doing my exercises. I continue to use the Venus as a more localised treatment for dry eyes but probably only about once a week - it emits a gentle heat. I no longer experience puffiness thanks to changing my pillow, but I use the Venus to help keep the oil glands around my eyes unblocked and find it really helpful for that. Realistically I'm too impatient to use it daily or very frequently long term for eyelid rejuvenation but I've had other viewers say they have got good results. Once commented yesterday that her 11s were markedly improved after using the Venus for a few months. Hope that helps!

Hi Clare, just wanted to update you that I bought the night cream on sale. It's a beautiful cream but the fragrance is so strong I can't stand it. I almost washed it off my face. I really smells like strong citronella... I may just use it some my eyes in the morning. I tried the top of my hands too but it's just so strong smelly....I must say that I woke up with very soft skin and my eyes definitely looked better in just one night. I wish they time down the smell. I have other Korean products that are just beautiful and with such delight fragrances that I will continue to use. I definitely will not reorder for this reason unless they minimize the string citrus smell it has. Maybe you can provide this feedback to the company too. Love your channel!!!😊

Thank you Claire methylene blue is interesting and i have been thinking of trying it since Claudia spoke about it. I see the serum does contain essential oils which i try to avoid as i have sensitive skin. Have you heard of a skin product called plated. It uses stem cells from human platelets rather than from fat or placenta,like calecim. I have used calecim for about 18 months and i like it but i was alarmed to find out that using the same original tissue sample and multiplying it over and over in the lab can cause mutations in its dna. I would love some clarification on this as this claim was made by the dermatologists involved with the platelet skincare line.

@thehonestchannel
@thehonestchannel 11 ай бұрын
@@shar7508 Hi, yes, i heard back from them when I was on holiday so excuse the delay. Here is the response from Calecim for you now: This is a good question - it is true that we use the same tissue sample for all of our active ingredients. ( The umbilical cord lining, not the placenta ) . The reason we can do this, and we are the only company that can, is because of the age of the stem cells. They are incredibly young. They are also infant stem cells, so they do not lose their "stemness". We have pushed out stem cells up to passage 30 ( 30 replications - so 12 Billion to the power of (30x29x28x27...) so on so forth and the stem cells did not lose any potency. There was also no mutation or change to the stem cells. We are not using the Stem cell itself, only the proteins that are secreted by the stem cell. Platelets are good, but the proteins you are adding back onto your skin are going to the age and the health of the donor. i.e. if the doner is 35 and overweight ( poor health ) the proteins will not be as powerful and effective as younger proteins. Stemness combines the ability of a cell to perpetuate its lineage, to give rise to differentiated cells, and to interact with its environment to maintain a balance between quiescence, proliferation, and regeneration.

The SPF is only 21 but I understand this does not include the methylene blue part of the sunscreen (not yet FDA approved). That being said, when she did the study comparing sunscreens, what % of oxybenzone sunscreen was used to measure against methylene blue? I have used the Bluelene sunscreen and because it is a low SPF and it leaves a blue/white cast, I have added another (tinted) sunscreen over top of it. But I would feel safer not to use so much sunscreen on top if I knew Bluelene was comparable to say an SPF 40 or 50. One other question- the methylene blue is super low on the ingredient list. I was taught that an ingredient that far down on an ingredient list would be minimal or no effect. Is that enough of methylene blue to really make a difference?

Hi. I've had the following response from Dr Cao to your questions: "In the experiments, we used the same percentage of oxybenzone to compare with the same percentage of methylene blue (at 100uM and 1 mM). "As for sunFix, I use it without any lotions in the morning since it is formulated similarly to our daily moisturizer. You are welcome to add your other routine to this protective layer. We also believe, unfortunately, the SPF testing (done by a standard lab) was not as accurate as we hoped so (The Bluelene SUnfix is at least SPF 30 in our in house testing). In short, I don't think it is necessary to add another SPF on top." On the question of is there enough methylene blue to really make a difference? Dr Cao says, "Yes, Methylene blue is used at the optimal concentration (as indicated by our in vitro testing). It is a low amount, so it wont stain your skin blue : )"

Methylene blue stains like crazy at it's full concentration. It's used in the aquarium trade to help cure fish that have fungal disease and clear a protozoan that causes ich. You have to be very careful not to spill it, any silicone or soft plastics in the tank will stain blue during treatment. This staining of the skin is why it's so low on the ingredient list. If you used it full strength you'd look like you were auditioning for Avatar. 😂
@jeanherrman8492
@jeanherrman8492 2 ай бұрын
Hi I read the paper and the concentration that was used was 0.5micromolar to 2.5micromolar in the cultures. I did some math to come up with adding 2micromolar in an approximate 1:5 volume of vitC serum, I use timeless which is L-ascorbic acid, it cuts the blue (a lot of people do this before drinking. I figure this is in the range they used even if the dilution is not precise. I apply this to my skin then follow with a tinted physical sunscreen. Heres the math: I figured out the moles using an online miles to mg converter. It ended up being 0.5micromole=0.016mg, I then diluted the standard 1% solution which is 10mg/ml by mixing 1ml to 25ml water which makes it 0.4mg, if you use 1 part of this in 5 parts mixer (vitC in my case) the it’s in the range of the skin experiments. MB is super stable so I imagine it can be mixed with most substances? I was wondering if the Dr. could tell us the actual concentration in their products?

IMO, your facial skin appears tighter since you've been using the MBlue. Re: retinoids, I think like most things, one size does not fit all. However, looking at women who have used them for many years with much success, it appears they do not cause damage in the long run. Actually, the retinoids seem to do the opposite. For myself, my skin improved when I started using retinol and then retinal. That said, I don't wish to use tretinoin.

Is it OK to put one or two molecular hydrogen tablets in 16 oz water along with methylene blue at a rate of 40 drops of 1% for my weight of 140 lbs? I also use DMSO over top of Povidone Iodine (Betadine) several times a week, which heals almost by the next day, any cuts or scratches or bruises from construction work or the cats . I also use liquid chlorophyll daily, as well as a whole ground up lemon minus the seeds. Does methylene blue compete with NO? And if you take beet root powder and other NO protagonists such as arginine, will that nullify or reduce the effects of the methylene blue? I also take colloidal silver on a fairly regular basis. What kind of reaction do these chemicals have on each other.
