Differences between the OEM Aisin clutch and the replacement Exedy clutch.
Rockauto sells the Aisin for $110 and the Exedy for $90. Since I've had positive experiences with Exedy in the past I saved the $20 bucks.
Second video reporting clutch feel will be uploaded when the car is back together.

Wow! I had to do craploads of research, (called dealer, M-PACT clutch manufacturer and my trans rebuilder) none of whom were conclusive about this particular model and year NOT using a pilot bushing thus making the alignment tool useless. The trick of using the 15mm socket is a PRICELESS tip for mechanics doing this job and to the best of my knowledge this is the only place on the internet where it's mentioned and discussed. Well F'ing played ;-)

Even though there is no pilot bearing, you can still use the alignment tool to help you center the clutch disk in the pressure plate until there is enough pressure on it to hold it in place.
@fisqual
@fisqual 5 жыл бұрын
I had to modify a different alignment tool that I used on some other car. Unfortunately I don't remember what the other car was to be of much help since I have like 35 alignment tools. You could maybe get away with wrapping the "nipple" with electrical tape to achieve the thickness required to fill up the space where a pilot bearing would normally go.

So after installing it and driving for a bit how does it feel compared to the original Aisin clutch? Does it feel as smooth or little more rough ?? Thanks
@fisqual
@fisqual 6 жыл бұрын
I am really pleased with it. The only difference I notice is that the clutch is slightly less forgiving since it has spring bushings instead of rubber. In effect this will make your car slightly more prone to stall if you pop the clutch upon release at really low RPM. Overall smoothness and pedal travel for engagement is identical to OEM.

what year is your Xb? I have '05 with 170K miles. My clutch is good now. Just curious for the future. How hard was it to change?
@fisqual
@fisqual 7 жыл бұрын
Mine is also an '05. It took me about 5 hours. Now that I've done it once I could probably do it again in 3. I've done clutches on about 20 cars in my life, this one was probably about middle of the road difficulty. The most difficult part was juggling the mounts. Unbolting them and getting the rear one out so it's out of the way is a freaking nightmare. I also only used jacks to support the engine and transmission during the process, but I definitely recommend using a crane instead, I think that would have saved me a lot of headache.
@joro8604
@joro8604 7 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's quick. Mounts? Like the engine mounts or the mounts on the housing?
@fisqual
@fisqual 7 жыл бұрын
Engine mounts. There are 3 total, the left and rear mounts must come out for the work. I strongly recommend replacing the rear one while you have it all apart since it's so much work to get at it otherwise.

278k miles!!!! Wow. I am approaching 250k miles on my original scion xb clutch. My scion drives as if it has no gears. I rev engine and it barely desires to move. A test drive mechanic says it is not the transmission it is only the clutch. He also says that clutch will leave me stranded at a stop sign or light any day now. Can you tell me if you experienced transmission troubles at that many miles? Before then or after that clutch replacement?
@fisqual
@fisqual 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say 250k is a pretty good run for a stock clutch. I think I only made it so far because I made a lot of really long highway trips (with no wear on the clutch). ...If the car is barely moving and speed doesn't climb equally with revs like it used to, then it's almost certainly the clutch.

Hi, thanks for posting. Ive replaced the clutch in my RWD/4x4 toyota truck as well as a VW Golf front wheel drive (twice). Is there anything terribly difficult or problematic about replacing a clutch in a manual XB? And how many miles did you get from the OEM AISIN?

@fisqual

If you're an aggressive driver like me, I'd go Exedy. I've been really happy with it. Otherwise, I think the AISIN is better for OEM feel and ease of drivability for someone less experienced with manual. ...I taught probably 30 people how to drive stick on the AISIN clutch and they seemed to pick it up faster than people do now that I have the Exedy.

Neither. They're both top quality brands and OEM suppliers. Include LuK and Sachs as well. LuK and Exedy apparently source parts from each other as well.

So how did you get the friction plate and pressure plate to align if the tool was useless?
@fisqual
@fisqual 6 жыл бұрын
I was fortunate enough that one of my saved alignment tools from a previous clutch job was close enough. It needed just one slight modification, I had to cut the nub off of the end that would normally go into the pilot bearing since the xB doesn't have one. But you can probably get the correct one from the dealer if you don't have extra alignment tools. Good luck!

I've installed all those brands and if available I always go exedy now. I had some issues with spline fitment of Sachs and had to file down the edges to get it to slide on the input shaft when mating the Trans. Ive put a few LUK into VWs with no issue but the cars didnt last much longer to know how they hold up and LUK isn't usually available for Japanese cars which is what I normally work on.

@@fisqual I am curious about this idea although the 15mm socket is certainly a great work around. Why wouldn't this trick work as well? With the extension cut off, wouldn't the splined part of the tool go right through the clutch plate and bottom out in the flywheel hole, thus ling up the clutch plate?
