It’s not like anyone thought head injuries were good for people, but the long term effects of concussions has researchers, coaches, and doctors concerned about the extra risks of some popular sports.

These kinds of chronic injuries also happen to soldiers and marines, due to the intensive physical training and, particularly in the combat arms fields (infantry, tank crewmen, artillery crewmen, combat engineers, and attack helicopter pilots). I was an airborne infantryman (paratrooper) for most my career. After 16 years, they had to medically retire me due to the cumulative damage I did to my body, and like some athletes, I now have severe osteoarthritis. And I'm not the only soldier who this has happened to.

i can only speak from personal experience. i played all kinds of sports when i was growing up. i was bound for college play my senior year. i refrained from playing when i had an MRI done on my spine. i had three bulging disks in my lower back, i was dangerously close to having sciatica. (extremely painful nerve pain) it took a long time to recover from this, and i still dont have a perfectly healthy back after three years. without a doubt, training in college would have left me crippled for the rest of my life. im still doing preventative exercises to keep myself healthy. my personal advice for anyone reading this as an aspiring athlete is to be very careful with your body. pushing your limits as a person is an amazing and rewarding thing to do, but knowing when to let up is equally as important.
@AvenueEmpire

My advice would be to protect your body while you play. Proper technique can fix many of the health issues with any sport. People also say not to lift weights because it can severely damage your body, however there are athletes who lift their entire life with proper technique. Its the same logic, Football is a contact sport. Learning how to tackle safety, and be tackled and fall down safely is paramount. Now obviously, there are still risks and you cannot eliminate players using bad form or illegal tackles but, there are other methods than simply hanging up the towel and saying im done.

youre right. proper form is the ultimate protection against long term injury, but it isnt an option to suddenly perform correctly when an injury becomes as severe as mine was. again, this is my personal experience. others can vary greatly.

Thank you for calling out the current misunderstanding that only concussions cause CTE. The latest findings suggest that non-concussive repeated head contact, like that by offensive linemen in football, who are rarely tackled violently but who engage in lesser physical contact every offensive play, also lead to CTE and other long-term brain damage. Given that fact, the fix for the issue in American football is not an easy one without completely changing the nature of the game.

Mostly from first person experience working with multitudes if schools , teachers, parents, and college students on sports scholarships . It doesn’t take much digging to see how much sports are sensationalized in this country as a whole, and how much money is spent on it on public education levels and up. The tax payers ultimately paying the price for players who lose out in the short term .. and a very small percentage of players “go pro”. I am not saying that my statement applies to everywhere and everyone from coast to coast , but I would wager it’s a much higher percentage then not . I hate typing from cellphones .

Patrick McCurry Nex Russ In theory, yes. But it's the Ship of Theseus Paradox. In only a few years, we should be able to create computers powerful enough to run a WBE, but it's impossible to tell if a WBE is conscious. Obviously, as an outside observer, if an AI seems to be a conscious being, we should treat it like one from an ethical standpoint. It's the biology component at work, not the computer component that's most tricky. We don't know what creates consciousness as we know it, and we will only be able to preserve its continuity for sure once we do.

If you're an adult and you wanna play football, got for it. You know the risks. My issues have to do with children playing a full-contact sport that encourages them to slam one another onto the ground. Say what you will about soccer, but it's at least not the norm to tackle a player; you don't do it on purpose. Sports will always have a degree of danger to them, sure. But football is just not ok for anyone under 18 with no say-so to play. To me it should be as illegal as dog fighting.

If anyone is curious about the subject of CTEs, there's this documentary on it called "League of Denial", that might be worth your time. Also, helmets unfortunately only do so much and largely can only prevent stuff like skull fractures and more superficial hemorrhaging injuries (which is important too). Even though it does dampen the impact, the only way it could help with concussions very much is if there was technology that could basically be an internal brain seat belt - but that's just too invasive and fanciful to be of any use at this time. Safer techniques and fostering a culture in sports that cares more about the health/safety of the players do seem to be a promising compromise (enforcing longer recovery times for injuries, giving former players a better safety net for their future healthcare needs, etc.).

I feel like we need studies on whether teaching safety in contact sports (like safe tackling) at a young age does or does not reduce risk of concussions later on. Because while I understand that a concussion will probably be worse for a five year old than someone whose brain is more developed, I feel like there is less risk in being inexperienced when the average weight of players is 50 pounds as opposed to when it’s 250 pounds. I personally feel like this makes sense, which is why I still support starting kids in contact sports early providing it’s not too competitive, but real research needs to be done about it

I'm a fan of figure skating, but when I watch it I'm very concerned about how dangerous it is. No helmets, high speed, a lot of jumps and spins, and a very damn hard ice. Also, it's not too uncommon for skaters to injury each other in practice and warm-up, because there are a lot of skaters on ice at the same time (oh my, that time Hanyu Yuzuru and Yan Han skated right into each other, and Yuzuru hurt his head really bad but still proceeded with the contest, I wonder if the got a concussion, wouldn't surprise me if he continued with the contest despite a concussion), and in pair skating and ice dance. In ice dance they "only" lift each other, but in pair skating they also throw each other in the air. There have been a lot of concussions over time, and also the skaters make more and more dangerous elements on the ice, because they invent more and more dangerous elements. For example, some years ago triple jumps, i.e three spins in the air, were the most difficult jumps (they still are for the ladies), nowadays the men have come to the level of doing quadruple jumps, i.e. four spins in the air, because they always challenge themselves and the other skaters as much as they can. For a quadruple jump they need more speed than for a triple. I hope they start to wear some kind of helmets soon, because the sport is already very dangerous, and it becomes more dangerous over time because of new and more difficult elements.

Honestly, based on the research I read during Cog Psych, the best way to protect people is going to make a concussion a season ending injury. People recover better from a concussion so long as they don't have a second occurrence within six months. Make it a season ender and the person is much less likely to end up with irreparable damage.

Rugby also has thus problem, but the sport itself has sort of changed to help mitigate it, as you have scrum caps, so when all the fat people are huddling you have a bit more padding in case a knee flies your way or anything like that, and with tackling you aim with your shoulder, and avoid any contact with your head. Plus concussions are taken very seriously.

Jambott yep but not as prevalent, rugby players are taught proper form tackling where NFL players usually lead with their head.
@softballslugger7
@softballslugger7 6 жыл бұрын
Also, I whole heartedly believe that the less padding worn by rugby players actually helps keep them safer. You’re taught proper mechanics in order to reduce injury and because you don’t have as much padding, you don’t tackle quite as hard. I think all the padding football players wear has actually cause more injuries over the years because more padding = harder hits = more, and more serious, injuries.

Some of these issues are also very common among musicians, and those are even less talked about. @EstebanRV
@EstebanRV 2 жыл бұрын
@@MerkhVision there's loads of em, not counting the whole bunch of mental/emotional issues,. Many people get tendonitis in different places, such as fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and so on, mainly from repetitive stress injuries. There are also postural dangers, for example many classical guitarist are used to playing with one leg higher tha the other, This causes the hips to be imbalanced and thus puts more pressure on one side of the spine, which can cause injury. Many brass players and some woodwind players also develop injuries in their lips, teeth and gums. A lot of these things can be avoided with good posture, good techinque, proper rests and general fitness, but unless students are aware of all of this (which a lot of times does not happen), and even if they are, the usual practice and mentality of perfection is really conducive to developing issues at some point or another.

As important as it is to keep advancing our knowledge of the consequences of these injuries, we need to keep in mind the goal of sports, especially for children: Exercise. Any and all physical activity involves SOME risk of injury. Low-violence sports like running are extremely repetitive, while non-repetitive sports involve higher momentary stresses or high-speed impacts. Risk of injury is always possible. But without taking these risks (ie, not being active) increases risk of all manner of sedentary diseases, including some things that scientists are just starting to identify. Make choices intelligently, but know that you're taking lots of risks, no matter what you choose.

I attribute a lot of these accidents to basically doing too much too soon. Our bodies are made to grow and adapt, if you start slow and work your way up your muscles, bones, etc will strengthen and get stronger to handle the newer and newer loads. You still can't prevent injuries 100%, but you can prepare your body for the strains and stress and make it more immune to simple twisted ankles due to having more muscle strength to offset that instability. Throwing these little tiny kids into situations where they're expected to do a backflip within the first week? Unless that kid was athletic their odds of getting injured are high. As for the concussions, best bet is to just work on developing better and better technologies for diagnosing and treating the injuries. Long term this will help everyone from the kid who tripped to the guy who crashed his car.

I practiced and taught martial arts for decades, and we consistently had more students injured and missing class due to "sports" injuries than from practicing actual combat arts.

Correction. Concussion symptoms can last longer than a month. Post-concussion syndrome can last years. Otherwise solid info!

There are safer techniques, not enough coaches teach them. That includes in the NFL. A player was carted off the field last year after delivering a hit where his head is down. That is something you should learn not to do day 1 in hitting drills.

I have osteoarthritis. But I think mine is from several things. Car accidents, training horses, having children. (4 of them) Just recently had to have 2 bone spurs removed from inside my hip socket. The head of the femur & the socket. And then a 3 disc fusion in my back. 🙄 Can y'all do a video on fusions in backs? That would be fascinating! 😄

We need to research percussive brain injuries, i.e., concussions caused by soundwaves, whether audible or not. It may be that loud stadiums full of fans yelling at full voice, with those voices echoing around, are a significant contribution to athletes with chronic traumatic brain injury.

Tbh football can be a non-contact sport without changing the game too much. For rugby and it's derivatives that might be more difficult. Though in my opinion the more padding a player has the more likely they are to act roughly. As the risk of hurting yourself in a tackle is much smaller. It's like comparing boxing to some semi-contact forms of karate. In those forms of karate strikes to the head aren't legal and you aren't wearing gloves. So if you hit someone it'll hurt your hand as much as it hurts your opponent. Whereas in boxing the big, heavy, padded gloves provide so much protection for the hands that you barely feel the blow you're dealing to your opponent. This makes it much easier to hit harder. Add to that the fact that in boxing the head is pretty much the main target, and you know the sport is just asking for problems.

Greetings all! I was hoping someone could help me. I played football for nearly a decade (gradeschool-highschool) and ended up with several concussions as a result. Several years have gone by, and I can still feel the effect of this. Does anyone know where I could volunteer in these studies so that I can participate and contribute to society.

last i heard, the nfl was saying that with the diminishing amount of children playing football at all, and the drop in highschool and collage football players, the nfl could be gone in the next 10 years. not enough players to fill the ranks.

Has anyone else played both football and soccer? I played 4 years of football, and 22 years of soccer. I jammed my neck playing football that I was out for 3 weeks, and needed to see a chiropractor. In football you wear a 10 pound helmet on your head, and you have pads all over your body. The helmet cuts your field of vision, and the pads limit your mobility. In my opinion football is a way more dangerous sport. I've only been seriously hurt playing soccer once, when someone kicked me directly in the shin, on accident.

Woodpecker birds seem to be immune to concussion due to the structure of their skulls and brains. Although they bang their bills ,and successively their skulls, their brains are insulated by a very deep resevoir of fluid to protect them in their need to hammer. Other birds and people don't have this. So if ones' brain can't take the trauma of the sport it's best to steer clear. Human beings weren't designed for rough head contact no matter how strong the body.
