The way the story starts goofy and then slowly builds up to a more serious story, and somehow doesn’t lose its humor or devalue it’s plot. Is just such an amazing balance and I love it

Even the serious moments are goofy like certain characters just shooting up a mountain while walking around in striped underwear. I just can't take him seriously. Or the fact that the only "panty shot" we got was on a guy wearing a lab coat. I saw that and was like... "Wait. He's not wearing NORMAL CLOTHING under there???"

@@Raytobe me too I thought it was just a boring series but after seeing it I started liking the series by the way seven looks really cool when his hair is down and when his hair us up he looks funny which makes me love the series you and me thought the same. TU HE MUSIC IS REALLY COOL.

This was like a cross between Space Dandy and Mob Psycho in terms of style, format and character profiles, and the overall attitude of the show is very close to Space Dandy, or even FLCL. It has the same eclectic style and ability to combine humor and down to earth character narratives with a completely over the top meta story happening in the background. This was a really good show.

I was thinking more of Gintama where the show is mainly comedy but it shocks you with its deep tones and then goes back to comedy.

I think scissors seven shows it’s heart in the first episode when it’s seven has to get that batch of hair and he’s seeing the compilation of wedding pictures and realizing he wants to remember who he was THAN BOOM JOKE. That showed me that the writers knew how to balance heartwarming moments with humor

Even if the style was chosen because of saving money, I feel like they still take advantage of that and use it in a comedic way. Like sometimes the characters just snap into different positions when they're in distress f.e. or there's one scene where everything gets greyscaled and the characters sit saddened in a prison cell. So even if they did it just to save money, while they had enough to make the animation better, it just makes the show unique. Haven't seen Mob Psycho tho will ppl say it looks like, so I can't compare the 2 and see if they both utilize the style in the same way. If that's the case, I have to say they couldve def done smth unique with it. But also there's cartoons with similar styles and a bunch of anime also just look about the same and noone complains about that either. So just because the Psycho Mob 100 is unique and not the status quo, doesn't mean a show should be hated on if they create a similar style imo. Also I've seen the show in English dub and the lip syncing is one of the best I've seen, as far as dubs go in general. Because the style is snappier and the mouths mostly just go up and down and don't take another form per sound, this means it's easier to make the lip syncing more accurate for dubs. This could've maybe even been a conscious choice. Side note: Additionally I had English subs enabled, which is a translation of the Chinese dubs, but sometimes it contains extra information about the lore or world, that the English dubs don't have. So I'd recommend enabling them. At first it can be hard to follow along, because the dubs and subs can be different, but I got used to it pretty fast. And I'd also prob recommend having English dubs, because even tho I haven't tried it with Chinese, I imagine jokes just land less when you don't understand Chinese. Hearing the joke and it'd delivery in a language that you understand is a big part of the joke I think.

Underrated as hell. Thanks for pointing out their unique hand drawn animation style I think it makes the action scenes more substantial and genuine. Can't wait for season 3. Lemme be that 100th like :)

As someone who grew up consuming a lot of Chinese media I think you need all that cultural background to truly appreciate scissor seven. There are so many traditional Chinese TV tropes that are mentioned and flipped on its head in this series for humor.

When i first saw this anime i thought the artstyle was weird but it gets better in the later episodes. The comedy is good too, my favourite line is when Captain Jack called seven a "Naruto Background Character" (i watched it in dub. Had some good tracks to listen to as well.

Noooice. But seriously, check out that "random chinese anime", if you haven't already. It's The King's Avatar. It also has a pretty dope Netflix live adaptation which I'd recommend anyone interested, should start with, before getting on to the anime.

As a mandarin language learner there is so much humour behind the original dialogue that can’t be translated. The original mixed Cantonese and mandarin and is used in a really interesting way that contributes to the story and characters. I watched the English dub, which is really good, but the Chinese original dub is just makes the whole watching experience really funny if you can pick up small details. Probably went from a 7 to a 9 when I switched from English dub to original.

I’m so glad you like this anime. I definitely understand that you don’t get the comedy part sometimes, because it’s a Chinese anime, therefore the jokes would be hard to get sometimes for foreigners. But I do want to say that the animation behind the anime at the beginning was quite hard, because there were only 7 people in this whole animation team, and the director himself is in charge of 10~15 duties at once. The animation gets better now since it’s undoubtedly popular in China as you can see in season 2 and 3.

One thing I appreciate about this show is over the corse of seasons one and two, it transitions from what feels like purely comedic filler to a genuinely interesting and surprisingly serious story. Rewatching it, the creators were very efficient with their characters and plot. Almost every character and passing joke is cross referenced in later episodes.

I just finished season 3 in RAW and all think is this show all day. As much as i like Ronny chieng personally as a comedian but when start season 1 it was only in Chinese, so i stuck on it and after a while i find myself appreciate the original Chinese voice actors and now even when i can choose for English audio I rather stick to the original voice because it encapsulate RAW emotions and cultural tone to each characters. In the end it's grate show and I request people to watch in original Chinese audio you will not disappoint with MC's voice and favourite Eleven calling Dachun "handsome"

I was looking for Chinese anime to practice my Mandarin and found Scissor Seven. The Chinese anime i have watched in the past do not compare to Scissor Seven. It is genuinely hilarious and has a very interesting plot which the writers have pieced together in such a creative and unique way. I seriously can't wait for the next seasons.

I just finished Season 3 and I absolutely loved it. But depending on what kind of Mandarin you're learning to speak, I wouldn't recommend this show for practice. The protagonist's VA is from Guangdong and he speaks Cantonese, so when he speaks Mandarin you can clearly tell that there's Cantonese accent in his voice and certain words he says are pronounced differently from standard Mandarin. Da Bao's VA also imitates a Cantonese accent.

This whole series of episodes are so fantastically built, and it’s so many small details/ underlines/hidden gems that I even got so captivated by, which never happened before, to watch their analysis of each episode! Their references to TBV Cantonese movies, their characters’ growth are so well done!

My happiness is immeasurable and my year has been made. I absolutely love Scissor Seven and and boy, the fact that it’s getting this much attention is.. BEAUTIFUL. The entire series is funny, except for the last few episodes of Season 2 and the entire Season 3 which are both as DARK AS HELL but it’s still so good, even if Seven can’t escape his past and wants to live a normal life but instead is forced to kill his BEST FRIEND because Shadow Killer crap or whatever.

I think the reason people have trouble getting into it is because you need to get use to the unique universe of the show to realize how good it is. This causes people to give up after the first episode and missing out.

"Sloppy" is pretty spot on for what the art direction was trying to achieve in some scenes. There's a few BTS the studio did about the style and they mentioned emphasizing simple, earnest aesthetics!

The show just hits different in Chinese. I mean, I'd still love Ronnie Chang's voice, but the whole way dialogue in this anime works goes hand to hand with Chinese pop culture. Which is completely different from American pop culture. This is why when I first saw it on Netflix, I honestly thought it didn't fit at all to the general audience that Netflix was catering still. Don't get me wrong, because I still love the show, it's wholesomeness is on par with the first few episodes of Yu-Yu Hakasho. It's a show I hold near and dear to my heart. The art is just so stylized and I love how it's not trying to be an Anime but a Donghua. Overall, I'm just a guy on the internet so don't take my word as gospel.

The show definitely has a unique charm I find. I watched it outta pure curiosity, and I ended up really enjoying it tbh. I find it doesn’t take itself to seriously, but it can when it needs too.

There's a lot of jokes that goes over people's heads because of its dub and language of origin, a lot of the jokes rely on the Chinese language. An example would be Seven's full name "伍六七“ which has the same pronunciation as "五六七" (Five Six Seven).

I’m watching the show in Chinese dub as language practice and ITS SO GOOD and I got the cultural references which makes it even better

The funny thing is that the simple style still works for when things get more serious I kinda wish iy did a bit more style shifting for joke moments but I do adore this show

It’s actually 14 episodes plus DVOA in Season 1. 10 episodes for the main ones and 4 episodes for the DVOA.

Theres this one scene where the main character is talking to a customer while the blue bird with sunglasses is trying to talk to him about money it just goes "You idiot, you haven't even taken down any of your targets. How are we supposed to pay rent?!?" "So extra hot sauce or no?" *or something else similar to that* "Fuck you."
