When scoliosis is diagnosed, more often than not, patients are diagnosed by a specialist whose focus is not scoliosis treatment. As a patient, this should be your first inquiry, do you want to be treated by a doctor who doesn't focus on scoliosis treatment or not? This will be the difference between getting a doctor who will only address your symptoms and one that treats, looking to reduce and improve your scoliotic curve.
Patients will also need to decide if they are looking for traditional treatment or conservative treatment. If you're treated by a surgeon, the outcome most likely will be surgical. However, if you work with a scoliosis specialist, the approach will be geared towards reducing the curve and avoiding surgery. So, your doctor will determine your outcome. Doctors will focus on what they are good at; therefore, the surgeon will operate, and the scoliosis specialist will work towards the reduction of the curve.
When looking at a chiropractic-centered approach vs. a surgical approach, the chiropractic approach will have a treatment plan that will try to improve the function of the body and health while avoiding/preventing:
1. Surgery
2. Having a patient with rods/screws installed in their spine for life
3. Side-effects of surgical intervention
4. Further injuries associated with the surgery over time
That is why many specialist groups have come up with different treatment approaches to manage scoliosis that do not involve surgery. These same groups/organizations have put together certifications to determine if a doctor is proficient in their model to produce the desired outcome.
The Scoliosis Reduction Center follows this belief and does not rely on just one treatment method, and currently holds many certifications from these different organizations;
- CLEAR
- CI's
- Structural Scoliosis Alignment
- Advance Award Masters
- ScoliBrace
- Digital Motion X-Ray
So, when looking for a doctor to treat your scoliosis, you will need to decide if you are trying to prevent surgery or not. If you are, you need to find a doctor that focuses on scoliosis and find a doctor who can produce the best results possible. Lastly, ask to see other patients' results to see what your doctor has done before and see if they have the skills to help you reduce your type of curve.
