Night Shift

3 жыл бұрын

My friends, tonight we'll try to replicate a landscape with charred remains of grass, shrubs and small trees, with a deep rutted dirt road right in the middle of it. This will be our base for the restored Panzer II model that we've been working on in the past 3 videos.
Scorched earth was a tactic used by the Soviets - instead of letting the land, resources and equipment fall into German hands, they burned everything left behind during retreat. I haven't seen this situation replicated in dioramas, so I thought it would be a nice exercise, even if just in a very small amount in the form of burned vegetation.

Figures... if you add them are probably the most important part and if you don't have good ones like the old Dragon figures shown you can IMO, ruin a nice model. Resin or 3d print is of course the better option. Nice work as always Martin!

Once you get the general “shape” of the “ground”, if you use a rasp, it’s much easier to finish shaping your foam. Also, it leaves the surface good and rough enough for clays to adhere without having to use PVA. Of course you still can, and I do, but you don’t need near as much.

Excellent! I like the smaller bases you build, to me they are better "snapshots" in time. All too often in most larger diorama bases I've seen, something or things will be out of scale or lacking detail and it will distract the viewer from an otherwise fantastic model. It is very rare to see a convincing larger diorama! Well done sir!

I know I'm practically a year late to the part but the tank and the terrain both look excellent! I do see what you mean about the model feeling out-of-place in the terrain, though. As a Californian, I can say that maybe some ash of varying sizes on the tank itself might help it fit in a little more. I live many miles away from the many fires we've had the last few years and even so, there's always visible ash all over my car whenever they happen. Some of it's so fine it's basically dust. Also, the sunlight turns a deep orange because of all the particles in the air, but I don't know how helpful that would be in the context of a diorama. Anyway, love the crazy amount of care and detail, and the casual atmosphere of this channel. Looking forward to more!

For fixing pigments, consider using a small pump spray bottle to apply the fixing medium. You'll still get the capillary action from larger droplets but you run less risk of disturbing the pigments. Oh, and you can protect the foam from the dissolving effect of the lacquer with a layer of PVA glue.
