Another "let's repair" Vlog where I document the fail/win process of buying faulty goods in the hope of an easy fix. This time I got myself a faulty SNK Neo Geo CD controller from ebay for a total £10.50 delivered. The idea is to repair and refurbish it so it can be used with my consolised MVS.
These controllers are pretty desirable and typically sell for around £30 in good used condition. Brand new in the box you can expect to pay anywhere upwards from £45. My plan, as always, is to spend a fraction of the cost on a faulty unit and repair it myself.

This has got to be one of the most satisfying videos I've ever watched, seeing a broken gem being restored to like new. I've got to get my hands on one of those controllers, and someday make a mod so I can combine that delicious d-pad with the buttons of another controller. Where could I start learning to refurbish or mod things like this? Help me out here RetroGameTech!

I wanted to say thanks for this video so much! The thermostat controller in my room has been wonky since forever, and so I saw this video a few weeks ago, and it occurred to me that the buttons might be the same style. They weren't exactly the same - these just used the metal dome switches over bare contacts on the board, not a microswitch, but the process for cleaning them up was the same. Got everything back together, and it works like it never has before! Thanks!!!

Thanks. Very true! It's so frustrating when I heard someone say they junked a whole system/controller just because it developed a small fault. So many useful parts wasted! :( I'm just really glad I managed to remember where I'd stored those little contact discs! :P

Fun fact: Neo Geo Pad 2 and Neo Geo Pad USB, which are updated versions of Neo Geo CD controller redesigned for use with PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 respectively, use regular microswitches like the one you've shown, instead of tactile switches like the original Neo Geo CD controllers use.

I wish the PS2 controller was as easy to fix as this. Your main problem here seemed to be a massive accumulation of shite inside the controller and a couple of distorted micro switch discs. A very informative video, good stuff.

Thanks. I've got a couple of working Neo Geo MVS boards at the moment. I paid around or just under £50 for each. The price really depends on the version you go for and condition. I see a lot of older working MVS boards sell for around £40. The games I was playing were Breakers and Robo Army. Breakers is probably my favourite fighting game on the system :)

You might not have noticed but I'm a thrifty bastard when it comes to my gaming hobbies. I like to lag at least 5 years behind the current gen of consoles where prices are reasonable :P . So unless I find someone selling one for under £40 in the next few weeks, I doubt I'll be doing Wii U related vids any time soon, :P. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Just regular cleaning items, nothing fancy. I normally just mix some shampoo into very hot water. Throw all the parts in and leave them to sit for 5min. After that I use an old tooth brush to scrub all the dirt/grim off. Works great! :)

manufacturers like SNK often "rebadge" off the shelf components I know NEC did this in the turbografx. SNK wouldn't waste money tooling new machines for a slightly different component, it might be an obscure part but it's probably out there.ps big fan of the show keep it up :D

Ty for the food for thought on this vid. Hopefully you can answer this but the discs dont give the clicking sound anymore well a few but i guess they got bent somehow when trying to take em out. Is there a way to buy replacements? Ebay has tactile switches with just the bare discs but dont know if it would work ty.

I am working on making my own Jamma Supergun and want to use the Neo Geo controller standard, but I am having trouble with the connectors. People go on about using normal DB15 connectors being to short, but in which way? Can you please tell me if: A. Will a Neo Geo Controller plug into a DB15 Male (console side, (aftermarket, not official 15 pin Neo Geo one.)) B. Or is it a normal Neo Geo console joystick plug (not aftermarket) will plug into a aftermarket female DB15 plug from the controller side. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Awesome, heres a request if you can, There is a controller for Wii U you have probaly heard of called the "Controller Pro U" by inerworks. The D-pad doesnt work so well on alot of them and the reset button isnt big enough, you need a pin to reset it. Can you do a video showing how to fix the dpad if posible and how to make the reset button a bit bigger or easyer to press. It would help ALOT of people including my self. Thank you
