Scotch-Brite Air INTAKE Breather Cleaner SYSTEM On 1976 HARLEY Davidson IRONHEAD Sportster CHOPPER

Had issues with my 1976 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Chopper Bobber not breathing right through the intake breather cleaner on acceleration. After trying two different air intake breather cleaner systems, I decided to take matters into my own hands and made an air filter out of Scotch-Bite on an already made air cleaner breather system. The results were profound.

I was willing to bet the Carb, was not getting enough fuel, then after seeing the back-plate gasket I was thinking maybe the breaster hole was plug-up someway. Glad you stuck to your game there Air-Cleaners are worth every penny, and so are fuel filters with all the junk gas out there these days. Rubber side down and Riding, thanks for the Show.

I had a loose jet in my carb, which caused the exact problem. Ran great until I hammered the throttle and then it would sputter. Tightened jet and solved my problem.

The best part of having drag pipes on my 900 was that break when you let off to shift ...(but I did push it out to the alley before kicking it over in the morning.) My best combination was a Keihin carb,/Hunt magneto/ no battery system (discharge capacitor saves the headlight from blowing.) One twist and first kick to start. Rode it 80's and 90's

I agree and don't think it's fixed yet. My guess is the screen in the tank or shut off valve doesn't allow enough fuel through for extended heavy loads which is easy to check for in the shop and may clean itself out with Sea Foam. The fuel filter was a very good thing and should have been left in. Possible ignition problems but I doubt it's the carb itself. Best of luck to him.

Hey, had a same problem with EVO sportster, finally problem found was blocked overflow/hose of the float chamber which is also acting as a float chamber breather. If its somewhat blocked the level of gas inside the chamber is never correct when reaches high revs resulting exactly those issues.

Maybe premature but CHK the slide for black suit around the needle and if it has suction when pushing it up. FYI V-Twin catalog has air cleaner kits for those who use a CV carb an Old bikes. You car run round or the ham can air cover ✌️

I know we both have fuel filters in line only and even with all the switching with his he still has a similar problem.. I've decided I'm going to get to the bottom of that issue! I've just gotta keep researching it more!

If it runs better with no AC, it means it was getting too much fuel to begin with. Not to say the float could’ve been out of wack or sticking, drowning her but it would happen all the time, especially at idle.

This is great content, you guys posting on your channels is a good resource with some real golden nuggets that might otherwise remain a mystery. I watched one from Scotty a little while back covering intake manifold air leaks and how initially, the symptoms aren't obvious, but ultimately how important the cause is to deal with.. ..and of course, once you know.. Another was a recent Shadetree FXR double, which featured a gentleman named Joe, who was certainly, all round someone we'd be blessed to know, but maybe especially, he came across as a carb magician.

Sounds to me like your coil is breaking down at cruising rpms when you put it under a load. If it is the coil, it'll run ok at lower rpms and at higher rpms if there's enough torque due to gearing to get it past the break down area but it'll miss, spit, pop and crack if you're in a taller gear at cruising speed and holding the throttle wide open. Good luck brother!

m telling ya man get a HRS40 for your sporty and a 42 for your big twins that need carbs. Buy a aem air/fuel meter weld a O2 bung in the front pipe 18" from the engine. and rear your air fuel by the gauge. Stsrt with wide open throttle (main jet) then cruise (needle highth) Lastly off idel and low speed (mixture screw and pilot jet) You want your idle screw to be turned out about 2 to 2.5 turns If it is under 2 go one jet smaller over 3 go one piolet jet larger. Do the rest by air fuel reading. I've probably tuned 35 or more bikes this way over the last 20 years with no complaints as well as my onw street and race bikes with great results

If you have some CV parts carbs in your boneyard, you could try to clip off an inch or two of your vacuum slide spring to open the slide faster under load. They sell weaker springs, or shorter springs to accomplish the same thing. With the more restrictive air cleaners, there may be a vacuum imbalance and the slide is not opening quick enough. Or you might have a pinhole in the slide vacuum diaphram. I thought that thought when you mentioned gas splashing out of the throat of the carb, which might have the accelerator pumpshot hitting the slide when it's down. Also, maybe look in the carb with the air cleaner off and see where the pumpshot goes when you twist the throttle. You can tweek the squirter to have it shoot at the bevel on the bottom of the slide.it could have loosened up and pointing in a bad direction. That's a quick, free test. It's good that you got it going better, but if it ran with the air cleaner before, then something happened to affect the mixture. But you know that. Just throwing some crap out there against the wall and seeing what sticks! Take care, Corey.

Hey brother, always enjoy your content, vibe, and taste in tunes. I'm not trying to tell you what to do. But I definitely recommend swapping the fuel hose for braided steel. Especially since it's so close to the motor. Heat soak can affect your performance too. I'm no certified harley tech, but from my ears it sounds like the timing may be slightly off at a higher rpm. It could be a cam is set at the wrong time. If you haven't already eliminated them off the list. Peace and love

I used to race an old CZ motocross bike. It ran fantastic when it was in the workshop but when I came to race it it would do just what your bike did. They had crap Russian carbs that leaked so I replaced it with a Bing carb. Was that the problem no. It has points and at higher RPM the condenser was not pulling out power. A part that cost nothing and you never think about.

@@SaddleTrampTV I've been fighting with these things for 50yrs, and I'm kinda getting burned out on it. Over the last few years, I've seen mechanical problems that defy all reason and logic, in everything that has an engine.

Would love to see the set up of the CV carb to the iron head . Love Keihin carb but butter fly parts are hard to come by . Just a thought for a video and no cost of parts .

That is such a cool bike. I love the paint scheme on the tank. Did you ever check the fuel filter inside the tank? Your neighbours must think you’re a motorcycle maniac ripping up and down the streets all the time lol !!!

might be good to check that the filter back plate is not blocking the vacuum slide vent as thats what it sounds like

To really fix the problem this is what I recommend. Undo the gas cap, raise it about two feet, and then drive a new bike under it. Install cap.

The c v carb has a port that provides vacuum to the diafram. Look into the carb

The later ones do. This is a 1990 carb. The diaphram petcocks didn't come out until about 99 to 2000.

I've had a couple of riders tell me they don't like fuel injection. That carburetors are easier to deal with if you have a problem. I'm gonna send them to this post the next time I hear that.

With EFI, you a degree in electronics just about, but hardly is there an issue with them. With carbs, you just need a little common sense and process of elimination.

@@SaddleTrampTV it's sort of the same with injection. If a cylinder isn't running right, process of elimination will tell you which injector isn't working. But, is it the injector or something else. Bad connection, controller, etc. etc. etc. I guess more possibilities than carburetors.

@@gregorytubbs3444but can all of that troubleshooting be done by someone that doesn't have thousands of dollars for a laptop they don't have and the software needed to perform the work on efi? Couple of screwdrivers and you can get a carb figured on the side of the road if need be.

@@djd34d14 my bike has no data port like a car. Any electronic faults show on the display. The only troubleshooting equipment I'd probably need is a VOM meter.

Sounds like a possible ignition issue to me??? Are you running points & condenser? flyweight/spring spark advance?(tiny springs get weak/flyweights get worn, stick from dirt or dried grease )...Coil wires?(thin wires & plug wires + connectors???) Coil itself ? (starts to hesitate when coil gets hot...???) Just grasping at straws... > You mentioned it been a while since adjusting pushrods...??? Usually they will get noisy if they're excessively out of adjustment ...Used to check them about every week or so WAY back when I was riding my XLH daily...Also recall years ago a friend's early '80's XL(IIRC) I had worked on...chased around for a couple hours troubleshooting a rough running condition at certain RPMs/gear & turned out to be a bad condenser ...Figured it out when running engine with ignition cover off & noticed excessive arcing = points eventually pit (IIRC ...at the time I was probably thinking early 1980's XL = an electronic ignition but it had points...???) ...Just making a few hopefully helpful suggestions to test, check or trial & error...
