Surely the win situation is to provide camping and hook up sites for tourists? With facilities

We are taxed on everything, there is just no let up at all. Government is there to find ways of taking money from the public and give to corporates. The company that will be set up to take the money will have some link to MP's.

Not too happy with that TBH, I stay in the Highland Council area and I use Dougalthecampervan to go fishing in the area at least once a week and use lay- bys to get easier access to the lochs and rivers, I pay enough to go fishing without having to pay a shite tourist tax right outside my front door. Not happy.

More SNP incompetence. Give motorhomes somewhere to actually park and charge for it. Proper facilities. They relentlessly promote the NC500 but close all the toilets etc. The road surface and road verges are completely knackered. During busy times of year the popular tourist routes are a nightmare with vans. I’m Scottish and live in Scotland. I avoid using the van during the summer in the popular areas

Actually it’s the local councils who will be implementing it not central govt, I agree current snp administration incompetent!

As somebody from Arran they can gtf if they think they will charge me to go away for the weekend on the island, overall this is part of a tourist tax to try and fleece tourists, so I doubt a penny will be spent on infrastructure improvements or building Aires. So basically I won’t be paying it, if they did provide Aires at a reasonable charge then I would pay.

I'm a landscape photographer living on the NC500. I have a wee camper van (it's tiny, smaller than a VW van) which gets me into location for early morning and night shots. (So, you could say I'm part of the problem!). I really don't know the answer to this but I do know that I despair when I hit the road at this time of year. I'll be direct; it's the large motor homes that are the problem. They crowd out other road users in car parks and on the smaller single-track roads. One can easily take the space of four cars in a car park at a beauty spot or attraction. I think this is a bigger problem than the overnighting. Travelling with a small camper van is one thing, but I don't see why folks need to bring basically a two bedroom house with ensuite bathroom! Maybe one answer is to levy a large vehicle tax. Many of these vehicles are rented and the tax could be levied on the rental company, who would pass it on to the renter. This would make renting such vehicles even more expensive, reducing demand. I know this sounds elitist, meaning that only those with deep pockets would be able to afford it, but the key is to reduce the number on the road. Perhaps a more democratic alternative would be to introduce a permit system for the larger vehicles, with only so many being issued each year (much like the trail permits that exist in the more popular national parks in the USA). In summary I think attempts to raise more money for infrastructure improvements may be misguided. Short of turning the whole Highlands into a much more heavily developed area (which I'm not sure people would want), there's a limit to what infrastructure improvements would do to improve the situation.

Sadly the charges will be implemented without any facilities being inplace. Once the initial complaints quiet down the charges will increase to fund facilities. So as normal people will pay twice 😢

6:19 Are the Scottish government trying to kill tourism? We love touring Scotland in our campervan, and spend money in each Scottish Isles etc we stay at inputting money into the local Scottish government, may i add we totally avoid the NC 500 because of those people who hire a campervan or motorhome who can't drive them.

Taxed on your wages to pay for fuel that’s taxed while driving your camper with road tax and now extra tax to stay there….. where does it end ? I can see it encouraging more wild camping tbh.

I can see the flaw in that tax, just based on your first two minutes - they need to plug a budget gap - but there should be transparency and the money only spent on a long list of things..... If you tax and spend it on the long list of things, the fairly large budget gap will still be there, surely. Even my wonky CSE in maths tells me that there will be no transparency, and the money will plug the tax deficit, not the proposed list of things it should pay for. I would suggest you have to build the proper infrastructure to start charging for it. I use campsites for their facilities normally - so they form part of my travelling plan to allow me a night on hook up, and with access to other facilities. But wild camping also appeals in some places, but not all.

Until 5 years ago, I used to go to scotland 2-3 times every year for holiday and used hotels from time to time even though I had my own motorhome....since then I now take a sleepover ferry to Norway or Sweden.....people are a LOT friendlier and my family and I have not been subjected to ANY abusive behavior towards us, as is so often experienced by the English in scotland.....not going there ever again.....

I have often thought that a ‘tourist’ tax would work for places like the lakes / some areas of Scotland, and that’s whether your in a car or a motor home. Id be willing to pay a tourist tax to visit these areas but I’d expect the income generated to be put back into the economy for better facilities etc

That was how I initially looked at. Clearly trying to deter tourism, rather than embrace it and work with it.

We are in 2 minds to go to Scotland for 2 weeks in September in our camper van as it sounds like a lot of the locals do not want us there and not it sounds like the Highland council don’t want us either?
@ChrisSloanes
@ChrisSloanes Ай бұрын
@gordonthomas5045 the locals are great 99.9% of the time. They rely on tourism in a lot of these parts so providing your a good respectable tourist they are always fine as is the case anywhere.

I'm Scottish and don't mind a small charge but I can't help think we pay enough road tax. Difficult to police this one too, for example I visit friends and family on the NC500!
