As a Scot the lack of ambition was unacceptable, 4 shots on target in 3 games. We would rather lose attacking than lose like that. It wasnt a pen for me and gives those that want to find it a very good excuse for failure. Too many excuses over a lack of quality - Albania and Georgia have captivated audiences this tournament with generally unfamiliar players but in a style of making a fist of it.

Bit dishonest this. Kane didn't say that former England players couldn't criticise, he said that those that hadn't won anything with England should remember how difficult it is to do so. It just so happens that is all of them except Sir Geoff Hurst.

Scotland played to their level. One must remember the amount of injuries to key players they had to endure through. Realistically with this squad on the pitch against Hungary, they would not have qualified for this tourney, and it was still a lot better than just a few years ago, when they looked like the worst side in Europe, after the minnow sides like San Marino. So fair play to them for getting even close to a play off game.

This England team gives me World Cup 2010 vibes, so I expectt England to scrape past Slovenia and go out in tthe round of 16.

I've felt the same way about this. It's this disjointed, terrified way of playing and looking second best in every game. Like in 2010 they knew they were strong enough to get out of the group so didn't change anything. Then the moment they face a decent team they get walloped. What's the point even approaching a tournament in this way. Rather shoot for the moon than just shuffle off without a whimper

Scotland were sloppy in the final third and didn't deserve to win the game. Hungary did just about more. A draw might have given them a sniff depending on other results but fell short.

Kane biting back is moot considering other players have played more minutes than he and some of his team mates did last season. Second, why didn't Armstrong try and shoot instead of falling over and looking for a penalty. Third, and I don't want to sound like a t***, but I think Scotland's chances disappeared with Ralston's stupid backpass in the Switzerland game. They were winning one - nil and were looking good and then a stupid pass like that for Xhaqiri to score. If they'd won that game then this game would have less important than it was. I guess Clarke will take his blame for playing one attacking, open style in the qualifiers and then going all Southgate in the actual contest.

Switzerland equalised with about 3/4's of the game still to play. We'll never know what would have happened without the backpass. Armstrong should definitely have had that penalty decision though, although Hungary didn't get their's either. Overall in hindsight, it was a really tough group, and Scotland with their squad, performed about as well as anyone could have expected. Didn't deserve to lose last night, but didn't do enough to complain about not winning.

All good points. I'd also add in a criticism of the repeated selection of Che Adams, bizarrely playing as a winger when he's hardly even good enough in his own position as a striker. Minor point but wasn't it Hanley that played that kamikaze back pass against Switzerland?

Really difficult for Scotland, they have 3 good players. They finished the group in the position they deserved, simple as that. Hungary have been disappointing, expected more from them.

How are you surprised. Hungry are a counter attack team and so are Scotland. The system doesn't work for Scotland, there were changes there to be made. There are two wingers on the bench, could have gone 4,3,3 and tried to attack with structure.

Scotland needs some black people to live there. They are only British Isles nation never to make the knockout rounds in the modern era. England and Wales benefit from diversity and the Irish teams benefit from huge English population of biracial people with Irish heritage that play for their national teams. Scotland is officially the least diverse part of the UK and it shows in their results. Bellingham, TAA, Kane, Walker, Maguire, Rice and Grealish all have an Irish grandparent

Scotland have as many if not more English born internationals as Eire. Even the current squad likely has several.

It was a penalty. the defender was never in possesion of the ball, the attacker had had a touch and was brought down from bheind. It wasn't like other examples where the attacker darts infront of a defender at the last moment as they're about to kick the ball and gets kicked before even touching the ball themselves. some of those are questionable. for me though i just wish that refs could give freekicks in the penalty area for more things. that challenge would extrememly likely got Scotland a foul anywhere else on the pitch and no one would really question it. but in the box suddenly because it would be a penalty you get people going, oh it was a bit too soft for a penalty. it was a foul in the box and currently that means a penalty.

To be fair, when working class fans approach the game you get uninformed nonsense like talksport. The Athletic might be a bit posh and a bit too straight faced, but they at least talk about what actually happened on the pitch and do a bit of research. Less intellectual hosts simply resort to "how much money do these bluddy footballers earn" and "tired? Tired? Footballers can't be tired! I work 50 hours a week". And that's when they're not doing 'tier list' and 'all time top 11' boring clickbait videos
