The Battle of Bannockburn was fought on 23-24 June 1314, between the army of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, and the army of King Edward II of England, during the First War of Scottish Independence. It was decisive victory for Robert Bruce and formed a major turning point in the war, which ended 14 years later with the de jure restoration of Scottish independence under the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton. For this reason, the Battle of Bannockburn is widely considered a landmark moment in Scottish history

Some important aspects of the 2 day battle are missed out - such as the pits with stakes dug by the Scots to obstruct the English cavalry advance on day one - and the four pointed iron calthrops sown to impede the horses. A small street in the area is named Caltrop Place. It also omits to mention the contemporary dissension involving parts of the English nobility and Edward II - the Earls of Lancaster, Warwick, Arundel and Surrey refused to join the expedition against Bruce.

Wallace was completely glossed over. And it was Edward Bruce who agreed the terms for Stirling’s surrender without his brother’s consent. The last thing Robert wanted was a pitched battle, but since Edward made the terms in his name, he had no choice. The Treaty of Northampton only lasted a few years before Edward 3rd of England tore it up.

Despite numerous military reverses against the English post-Robert (this was the last major victory they won against England) they preserved their independence for another 3 centuries. And it would be a Scottish king who would sit on the throne of England and unite the two kingdoms in 1603.

@@AGMAGM-mm3ci the Romans fell back behind the wall because Emperor Honorius needed the soldiers to defend Rome from barbarians. Scotland (Caledonia) was militarily defeated. The Roman departure had nothing to do with the Scotland. It was just a strategic move, forced upon the Romans by barbarian attacks on Rome. I suspect however, that we're actually debating the definition of the word "conquered".

"in the year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland starving and outnumbered charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets, they fought like Scotsmen... and won their freedom" - Mel Gibson, 1995
@garykeith1048
@garykeith1048 Ай бұрын
The Scots won by using superior tactics, weapons, and wise use of the terrain at New Park. Mel Gibson is a babbling idiot who knows nothing about military strategy and winning a war. Robert Bruce's army was composed of veteran, seasoned warriors who had fought the English for over 14 years begining with Glen Troll in 1298. You don't win a war by charging at your enemy in a mad fit of rage like a Berserker Viking as portrayed in Brave Heart. If they fought in that fashion; the English calvary and archers would have decimated them. Bruce innovated the use of the Scottish schiltron as an offensive charging formation; instead of a stationery formation vulernable to missile attack.

Just a minor Historical correction, Edward 1st didn't "invade" Scotland but assumed the Monarchy of Scotland because after the Scottish Kings death, fell of his horse and broke his neck, childless, the clan leaders could not agree on a successor so invited Edward 1st to oversee Scotland until a successor was found, but, instead he assumed the Scottish crown for himself.

He took this symbol with him when he moved his court to London on becoming King James I of England. It's been used by the English ever since.

@cinematicbattles559 the reason that the Scots won was because they managed to contain the English to a narrow front by charging towards them in formation and trapping them between the Pelstream and Bannockburn. Had the English advanced against the Scots, the outcome might have been very different as Bruce was vastly outnumbered. More English casualties happened on the stampede as men were drowned trying to cross over the Bannockburn after Edward fled the field. Enjoyed your video, shame you couldn't get Stirling Castle to be shown accurately sitting high up on an old volcanic rock overlooking the entire area.

The English were badly led. They should have won They had thousands of knights on horseback, a lot of them very rich men from all over western Europe An armoured mouted knight is equal to 7 men on the ground in these terms the scots were outnumbbered about thirty to one. bruce didn't want to fight this one. He knew what defeat felt like. His captains were going to depose him if he didn't But the english had marched from Berwick in two days, about 80 miles and the night of the first day of fighting was a saints day. that means all the English peasants, confident of an easy win were drinking hard Then they were woken by the Scots odaciously advancing on them at dawn The Swiis used the obsoete shiltron tecnique 15 years later and got the credit for ghanging the natiure of warfare. but it was reinvented here in Scotland like eeverything else ie the indstrial revolution telephone, television, anti biotics tarmac The steam engine i.c. engines, pneumatic tyres anti anti septic surgery ,anesthetics, the stirling engine ,radar,England, grass, trees,..., capitalism, the U.S. navy, the russian navy
