Nice design idea. Almost pull this off, however the execution was very sloppy and rushed. It reminds me when I used to do this kind of DIY projects without putting the correct amount of thought and rush it to get it done. 1. He could have saved time, and a lot of aggravation and frustration by taking the time to TRACE the lines where the divisions were going to land and PAINT the drywall BLACK with a 4" wide roller and some black latex paint. In this case you don't even need to tape the dry wall because the panels will cover the excess paint on both sides. 2. For god sake man, sand the edges of the plywood correctly then SEAL THE WOOD before you paint over it. 3. ALWAYS paint the panels BEFORE you hang them. Painting them after is completely dumb, messy, inefficient and you will never achieve a good quality finish. 4. HOW TO AVOID EDGE BLEEDS WHEN USING TAPE ? There is a hundred ways to do this. The quickest and dummy proof? - Put a tape about couple mills away from the edge of the face. - Put WAX on the bare wood and cover the wax with another tape overlapping the one before (you need to use a STRONG TAPE don't go cheap) - Paint and let it dry completely (read the instructions on the paint) - Remove both tapes. The black paint will be seating on top of the WAX - Now lightly SAND the WAX (150 - 220 grit) and it will remove the wax and the paint. Always try to visualize the work flow and you may be able to come up with the correct steps. Good luck

Thank you for sharing your efforts and a great job done. I’m a total novice and planning the same job. I would paint the wall roughly over the areas exposed and think it would save an awful lot of time. Too long explanations about taping over and paint bleeds, got your point right away. I will be varnishing so i’ll Get this job done before I install too. Thanks to the tips you have shown.

Great result, I usually paint the black onto the back board with a small paint brush, takes longer but less messy...

Looks awesome! Nice to see an actual DIY attempt at the SBC plywood wall, think others will learn a lot from seeing yours! I'd be tempted to vanish before installing the sheets and then spray the black detailing

Cheers, there's definitely a lot of merit in that. The varnishing was the easier part, but spray painting the wall and hand painting the edges before sticking them on, would have made life a lot easier!

Looking good! My wife has done a lot of painting with different colours lately, and to get a sharp line with masking tape she paints the tape with the base coat first to saturate/"fill"(?) it. She suggests you could have varnished the edges and tape first and sprayed (or brushed) the black over it directly after it was dry. In our experience there is no way to completely avoid masking tape bleeding a little, without this trick.

What I used is a black u channel to form the lines of the shadow gap and this hides the ends of the ply after sealing then you can also put 10mm……3/8 polished glass in any of the horizontals for small shelves.

Great videos , can I glue ply onto ceramic tiles thinking of doing the bathroom cheers
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
With the right stuff you can glue practically anything together...ply is a great sub-base for bathrooms because it's typically hard-wood, and once primed with a bit of PVA is relatively waterproof and unbelievably strong. You can then have your bed of cement over the top to hold the tiles.
@scottjohnson1702
@scottjohnson1702 2 жыл бұрын
@@OfficeBoyBuilder I want to glue ply to my tiles as I want to attach panelling to the ply instead of knocking all the tiles off the wall , cheers
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh sorry. I understand now If the tiles are sound, then I don't see why not! Once you've figured out your levels etc you'd have a decent surface to work from. I would still be inclined to prime that ply with PVA, and then use a really strong adhesive like polyurethane or a polymer glue. Avoid the standard green or pink tubes of grab adhesive, that stuff is useless!

Paint the wall first and I think it would help using some kind of clear coat to fill the end grain before painting it black
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
I did strongly consider that, but figured I'd still have to paint the edges of the ply-wood anyway...I think a paint-brush would have been the best option!
@kurtparent
@kurtparent 2 жыл бұрын
How do you think it would look with the back wall painted, but not the end grain of the plywood? I'm leaning that way.
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
That was a strong consideration, the issue I thought we might come across, is that the shadow gap may not look definitive enough. I didn't want it to look like an accident or as though it wasn't crisp...I think painting the back wall first would definitely have been easier and better though!
@thienpham911
@thienpham911 2 жыл бұрын
its probably better if you paint the back wall black and just add the plywood on top. that way it will have no bleed

@@OfficeBoyBuilder looks amazing. Im always a fan of oils over varnish type products I think im going to give it a go in the future. Perhaps spraying some clear lacquer on the joints before painting black to stop it bleeding. Might help abit
