Torts is one of the most misunderstood coaches in the league. There's method to his madness.

Torts is the most perfect definition of a douche. He actually thinks that screaming at grown men is an effective method of coaching?! What he did to Luongo was incredibly petty. Blue Jackets fan here, seeing a few in these comments wanting Torts gone and I wanted to share my perspective. So 2 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as a franchise and most seasons we didn’t make it, we were very far from watchable. We were swept in first series we played in and lost 4-1 in the other. Torts comes in and 4/4 playoff appearances, competitive against Penguins and Capitals the first two seasons(both teams won the cup those years) then third year sweep the team that nearly had the best regular season ever, lose tight series next round to eventual eastern conference champion. Lose top three players in the offseason and get ranked 29th in preseason rankings and make the playoffs anyway with the youngest team in the NHL and I believe over 400 man games lost, beat a heavily favored team in a best of five, then lose game 1 of the first round in 6OTs to, again, eventual champion...yeah, I’d say what he’s doing works in Columbus even though he doesn’t have much of a chance to win it all, at least until the young talent we’ve developed(pray to God Jarmo doesn’t trade more of it away) get their feet under them in the league. Because lord knows we aren’t attracting any real free agent talent. For anyone that wants him gone, I truly hope you’ve got a better candidate lined up to come to Columbus, otherwise expect a bunch of lottery picks that won’t be driven to anywhere near their full potential, aka few and far between playoff appearances. P.S. don’t be so sure we won’t sneak into the playoffs this year. There’ll be a run, just might not be enough this time with the short season.
@FMichael19703 жыл бұрын
But - but - but.....He’s mean and he yells ! Obvious joking aside - many here overlook what he’s accomplished in Columbus.
@snookman99203 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. Torts’ camp is always so rigorous yet it always prepares the team. I believe that their conditioning helps them win the tight games with less star power. With the lack of a real camp this year, I think the play on the ice and camaraderie has been negatively impacted. Throw in the PLD situation and Andy trade and it has been a fluid, difficult dynamic. Torts has been the best thing for the Blue Jackets and I really respect how he has helped the young (receptive) players. He treats all players the same and you had better play hard every shift or you will sit. The media hates him and other teams’ fans hate him but as a Blue Jackets fan, I love this guy!

He’s a tough coach for sure, but he needs to learn that some players don’t respond to such a harsh approach. With that said, Laine could really grow if he learns more about “playing hockey”. Yes he’s a goal scorer, but watching away from the puck is painful.
@tonybaloney74033 жыл бұрын
Those players will never win if they can't handle being pushed. Same players will get big pay days from the Leafs though
@Fakename703 жыл бұрын
Why would John need to “learn that some players don’t respond to such a harsh approach”? He’s the GD head coach! Maybe it’s the players that need to adjust and adapt. Particularly if they’re accustomed to more of a country club atmosphere.
@iandalcourt33843 жыл бұрын
I’m old school. Practice hard. Play hard. Win hard. If you don’t want to be a professional hockey player no one is forcing you to be there and there is lineup of guys behind you that would give their left nut to be where you are. For the multi million dollar paycheque and the fact you get to play the greatest game in the world as a profession you should be expected to give your best at all times. When the US beat The Soviets the first time at Lake Placid they did it on sheer hard work. I challenge you to find any team that didn’t bust their ass to win Stanley Cups. Time to bury the Millennial Mentality and take pride in working hard again to achieve your goals.
@cbj4sc12 жыл бұрын
The goal of a hockey team shouldn't be to be the "hardest working" team, the goal should be winning a Stanley Cup and a good coach will put their old school ego aside inorder to reach that goal.
@joeidaho59382 жыл бұрын
I think the Canucks had the same problem with Torts....and it was no surprise that they were just so weak-assed come playoff time. Players like the Sedins and such were good goal scorers but just simply sucked when things really got intense and tough in playoff hockey. I would even say the same about Luongo. There was this pervasive choking mentality when the going got tough in Vancouver...and so not surprised they couldn't handle Torts at all.

@Johnny Dong Yes, like CBJ does. Google the Columbus Blue Jackets. And google John Tortorella. It's not worth my time explaining to you. You forget when that team swept Tampa Bay in the first round? A team that had one of the best regular seasons in history and was heavily favoured to win the Cup. Right now, CBJ are playing Riley Nash as their top Center. And still in contention for a playoff spot. Their #1 and 2 Centres from last year are gone (Dubois and Wennberg) as well as Ryan Murray, a great D. Still in the mix for a playoff spot. Their 2 best players from that Tampa sweep, gone in free agency (Panarin, Bobrvosky). Beat the Leafs in the first round... Then played Tampa super tough.. Tampa was out for revenge and won the Cup. Brush up on your hockey knowledge there, broski.

PLD is barely getting 15:00 a game. He looks weak in Winnipeg and has only produced at 3-on-3. The whole idea in the CBA regarding free agency is set up so players don’t get to choose where they play until they’re 27 or have played 7 seasons. PLD whined and failed his team. Looks like it’s happening again. Columbus thanks you!!! For Jack Roslivic and for paying $2m of Laine’s salary. PLD is not looking good!!!

No way and i dont understand why people believe he’s any good. He’s had one good run with a great team in front of him 15 years ago and has not done shit the rest of his career. You cant have a coach trying to run the show like he does in this league anymore it just doesnt work. He doesnt scare or impress anybody and nobody wants to play for him. He’ll be out of a job in no time
@petercruz86153 жыл бұрын
@@elpatron8666 He could tone it down for sure but there's no way he'll be out of a job with his track record in Columbus. 2 Time Jack Adam's Award winner, winningest US born coach, 4/6 playoff appearances with him as head coach. The resume is important in the league and he will have a job after Columbus, guaranteed - unless some scandal comes up and we see him retire. You can argue that the team (CBJ) never went deep in the playoffs, but it's actually laughable as to who they met in the playoffs. 2016-2017 they lost to eventual champs Pittsburgh Penguins 2017-2018 lost to eventual champs Washington Capitals 2018-2019 not only swept the TBL who were favorites, they lost to the eastern conference champs Boston Bruins 2019-2020 they lost to the champs TBL. He coaches hard but that style of hockey shines in playoff settings where its gritty, physically demanding, and emotionally draining.
@elpatron86663 жыл бұрын
@@petercruz8615 yeah i guess its not too bad but then again most of the players that made that team decent are gone. What if they had a different coach? They played solid teams for sure but if you cant get along with your stars in this league you’re just not going to get results and i feel like eventually that will catch up to him regardless of resume. Especially in this day and age. I would go nuts playing for him
@petercruz86153 жыл бұрын
@@elpatron8666 That's fair, curious as to who you are thinking of when you say "the decent players are gone?" In my opinion Panarin, Duchene, and PLD wanted out of CBJ to play in bigger markets. Bob was let go cuz of Merzlikins, and rightfully so imo. Other than that I'm not sure as I'm not wholly familiar with the team.
@elpatron86663 жыл бұрын
@@petercruz8615 that right there is a lot of firepower leaving the team. You could say its to play in bigger markets of course players are not going to come out and say its the coach but most have had issues with him and in general when players are happy they stay. Then you have domi and laine come in and he benches them right away like a game or two in, you just cant do that. No stars are going to want to sign there as long as he’s behind the bench. Just my opinion, we’ll see i guess.
