The Philadelphia Flyers said top prospect Cutter Gauthier didn't want to play for them, so they sent him packing Monday, trading the forward to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round draft pick.
Flyers general manager Danny Briere told reporters that the trade "was a long time coming." Briere said when the team drafted Gauthier that the forward told the front office that he was "built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer" before ultimately changing his mind.
With all this drama, it's something we've seen before with Eric Lindros. However, the Flyers role in that was slightly different...

There's a difference between Philly's hate for Crosby and Philly's hate for someone like Cutter. We hate Crosby cause he's the best player on the rival team. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that on Tuesday that the issue stemmed from the Flyers not signing Gauthier to a contract last year. Supposedly, the team did not want a bonus overage carrying into the 2023-24 season, and that was enough to upset Gauthier ads his camp.
@kpw1320

This is one of those things where I agree with both sides. If Gauthier doesn't want to play for Philly, he's fine to do that. Blake Wheeler didn't want to play for the Coyotes, Justin Schultz with the Ducks and Jimmy Vesey with Nashville. Unlike those situations, Philly is actually coming out way ahead because they got an NHL caliber player AND likely top 10 2nd round pick. Gauthier could have just waited till his college career was over and walked, but by making this known, the Flyers got a return. I'm also cool with Philly being mad and agree that yeah they should be happy to ship out anybody who doesn't want to be there. I don't think Torts is serious saying he doesn't know Cutter from "a hole in the wall," but if he is, that's pretty bad on his part and actually reinforces Gauthier's position of not wanting to be in Philly. Cutter's not some UDFA, he's Torts' 5th overall pick from his first year with the team. That's a guy he should be expecting big things from and be in contact with.

If this young man had made up his mind that playing for Philadelphia would be miserable, for whatever reason, real or imaginary, then it’s a GOOD thing that he’s gone from the Flyers’ organization. I believe it's because many kids dream of playing in the NHL and hockey fans see a team drafting a kid as the team giving him an opportunity to make the dreams of many come true and refusing to play for that team is like him saying "uh, no thanks, I'd rather not be a pro athlete making millions to play a game that many people have to pay just to play". Honestly it's ridiculous, plus the hockey media just needs something new to talk about every 15 minutes so they often get desperate enough to make a mountain out of a mole hill, which is the main reason I would never play for a Canadian team and I'm Canadian

2 reasons for this: 1. He’s a Gen Z Superstar, and 2. He doesn’t want to get yelled at by Torts (a corollary of 1.) And, as much as you want to hate and blame him for it, it’s just the way he was trained. Most kids of a certain socioeconomic status have never even had to talk on the phone to an adult they don’t know, let alone had to deal with media and team management (both of whom will CERTAINLY have some uncomfortable questions about hanging a team out to dry) in a multi billion dollar global industry. And when you add just enough of the narcissistic entitlement necessary to become a premier talent, this is what you get (btw, it’s the same for all those kids w/o the talent and their crummy jobs in their crummy home towns).

If you’re gonna draft someone (in this case your first pick!) make sure you know how to say their name properly otherwise you obviously get off on the wrong foot. Secondly, if you actually want to keep your first round draft pick on your team, make sure to put your coach in check and aligned before his first discussion with such a player. Those two things solved for in advance, he would still be a flyer today.

I'm with you with everything, 100%. Well, no. The fact that a prospect of any team mention that he is a dire hard fan of Crosby, or any fame players of that caliber, you mention it as if it was scandalous llol. "you can"t make this stuff up" you said. Like... WHAT? Do you think prospects get their memory erased when they are drafted by any random team? Let's not become stupid ON TOP of an already difficult situation. Lindros happened before social media, keep that in mind before over dramatising the choice made by litteral kids. We don't know enough to judge the decision anyway, so adding drama is just recipe for disaster. You, as someone who does content for a social media should know that more than anyone. Flyers' FANS are right to feel pissed and robbed, whatever the reason this mess happened. But outside that, let's AT LEAST know the facts before forming an informed opinion. We don't know whether Tort is the cause, so why speculate? What I find more irritating is to see the freaking same coach again and again and again and again in rotation around the league for the past decades. We also don't know what so many of them have done or saw or let happen during all those decades, let's keep that in mind; players have inside info we do not have or won't surface for a long time. Plus the way Tort himself replied to the question is so freaking passive aggressive and classless. Just say IDK and wish everyone good luck and period, next question. About a freaking kid lol, it's just pathetic I'm sorry. He knows him as little as a "hole in a wall", about the first round draft pick of the team you're coaching, who just became the MVP for a gold medal... Sure Tort, suuuure. But many love that kind of drama and BS or raging over stuff that we don't even know. Also what does Tort's performance as a coach right now have anything to do with the situation? I REALLY thought after Chicago, people would be more careful to not equate performance with a locker room that isn't a huge problem, etc. You NEVER know what is going on in a locker room. What if an incident happened recently in Philly's locker room that wasn't dealt the proper way, something that strongly force the kid's agent and himself to make such a difficult decision, knowing full well he would be crucified... Is it not more plausible than any other surface reasons you proposed? It's my guess anyway, and if I'm right I think it will be uncovered, and Tort might lose his life membership position as coach of any NHL team. Let's wait either way.

As a member of the Ducks he'll play one game a season in Philly. It won't matter to him at all how mad Flyers fans are at him. LA fans never forgave Rob Blake for demanding to be traded, but he continued to play at All-World level.

Professional hockey is a job. If you don't like the company you work for, you look to make a change. Why should this be any different? The draft only gives teams rights to sign, not ownership of, a player. More players should exercise their rights within the system.

Well draft in fans eyes is more like marriage. Commitment to that team at least for 3-4 first years. Especially if you are high draft pick. If you are late pick nobody really cares. So that's why it's betrayal to Philly fans.

Maybe Adam Fox, but the Lindros situation was much different.

Lindros got crucified and he’s 10x the player this kid is. Not a good look lol

And lindros shouldn't have been crucified especially given his reasons for not wanting to play with the Nordiques. Until Cutter or his agent actually gives a reason folks shouldn't be crucifying him. Boo him on the ice if you want but don't make him out to be this horrible person when you don't even know his side of it.

Glad the thousands of people I saw saying they wanted Bedard to do this weren't rewarded with their wish.
